Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Rapist or Lad Mag

Somebody sent this on to me today, it lists 16 quotes and asks you to determine if they are from a rapist or a "lad mag".

I got 9/16 correct, which is a decent score (I guess?) but I'm still shocked when reading over the ones I got wrong.

I'm interested to see what others score and the reactions people have.

How do they know the guys writing for the lad mags aren't rapists?

I'm sure they could do the exact same thing with a woman's magazine to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

I have never raped anyone nor have I ever had the urge to perform such a horrid crime so I think that should mean I'm not a rapist.

I don't need to answer 16 questions tbh

    Sensationalist shìte.

I only got 1 of them wrong. Rapist quotes are angry while lad's mag quotes are fantasy, not hard to distinguish between the 2.

I think its asking if you can tell the difference not which one you are. Its more difficult than it sounds.

They're not 16 question to determine if you're a rapist or not.

Was thinking that too, though its unlikely to ever get mixed up with a rapist. Maybe an anti man feminist person or something.

    "are you a rapist"

Here's some select quotes from 50 shades of grey... Now, was the author:

    A: a psychopath
    B: a rapist
    C: a sadist
    D: all of the above
    E: a woman

I think the issue here is that porn is (in the context of the type of lad's magazines we're talking about) a man's gateway into fantasy land. Not a large proportion of them actually agree with what what the lads' magazines say (the ones who do are generally single for obvious reasons), but for that half-an-hour or whatever of masturbatorial pleasure, it's arousing for them to believe. One of the critical differences between rapists and your average consumer of porn is that when the latter is finished with his business, he returns from fantasy land and lives a normal life with ordinary men and women while the former actually live by their fantasies.

That is why the quote in that article about objectifying women and spreading the idea that rape is OK is somewhat disingenuous; nobody normal would actually let a lad's magazine overrule an entire life's worth of social conditioning; those that do generally thought that way to begin with. The longer men (or women) are made to feel guilty about enjoying porn, the longer it's going to take to have a proper multilogue and get to the point where people can interact with sexuality comfortably without the usual veil of shame.

This thread is stupid, I don't need a survey to know how I feel about black people.

hmm, only got 2 wrong. no idea what that says.
Probably just that I have a good idea how the language is used by jopurnalists.

n the 2 i got wrong, i thought were journalists, turned out were rapists. Prob just means they're bigger perves than i gave journo's credit for...

Nah, I was joking, as evidenced by my use of the ancient filthy institution 'Razzle', which is A) grotty pornography and B) a funny name vs. new erotica.
And the 'EH? lads' which I thought was a dead giveaway.

I was thinking more FHM, loaded or mens health type of mags as apposed to porn. If so id say its more highly selective comments and comments taken out of context than fantasy.

Never understood people buying the 'lads mags', I mean if you want to rough up the suspect just buy a high quality jazz mag like "Hairy Growlers" for instance and off you go :pac:

they're not porno mags. Well they weren't the ones I got.

As above. I bought them out of desperation when I was younger, for something to read on a journey at short notice etc.

Tbh i'd be morto if I found myself buying them as an adult. If I saw someone over 25 buying one of those, it would be a pretty fair indication that the person is a stone cold moron.

No. However, a lot of porn has undertones that women want sex or that they want to be dominated. Whether your definition of "rape style" porn includes this type of fantasy or not, the fact is that this type of porn is quite common. I'm not exactly sure what your point is, but if it got lost in translation, it's probably because you took a personal swipe at me based on a quote taken out of context.
    Duggy747 wrote: »

I was clearly referring to the context of lad's magazines.

Addendum: This has caused some confusion, so I should probably clarify I'm not accusing lad's magazines of promoting rape, simply that the fantasy framework in which porn operates is a different one from the real world and hence shouldn't be judged in the same way.

To be fair womens mags are full of stupid dross too, I havent taken the test in the OP, but I seen an article about the same topic some years back (maybe last year) and without the context those sentences were used, they mean nothing.
So I really think we should slow down accusing lads mags of promoting rape.

Women do want sex. Just as much as men. And some women like to be dominated.

Domination in porn does not equal rape though.

I saw a video a while back during research where they showed a bunch of quotes, alongside the guys that made them. All the quotes were laughably shocking, like how women are retarded, blah blah, so on. Then, in the second half, you learn that those men don't exist, they're all things said by various women books, magazines, talk shows and what not. You skew anything in the right direction you can achieve the result you want.

Personally, I don't read lads mags, they're full of shitty articles I don't care about pandering to the type of guys I grew up hating, and being honest, the chicks in there aren't my type of eye-candy. My biggest issue with "Tests" like these is they feed right into the mind of extreme feminists and make men as a whole look like monsters.

I wasn't saying that at all, I put in a footnote in my previous post to explain, what I was saying is that the real world and the porn world are not the same. My original post was in response to the quote in the linked article claiming that porn and lads' magazines promote rape. I think it's a ridiculous idea, and I'm disagreeing with it, not agreeing with it.

Well, this is upsetting. According to a new study, people can't tell the difference between quotes from British "lad mags" and interviews with convicted rapists.

    Wtf!!

Even if the above were true, so what!!

A "man's magazine" is hardly going to trick a woman into going for a spin up the mountains or pounce from behind bushes some night.

"Arrest that magazine officer, it sounds just like a rapist does when being interviewed!"

    it's pretty easy

the lad mag ones are about filthy $ex

the rapist ones are filled with hatred toward women

    I don't understand the confusion
