Pity. I remember been told a couple of years ago that the council intended to turn it into a tourist attraction. I suppose the recession put an end to that.

the council cant, its private farm land. many different organisations have allegedly 'tried' to gain public access/ create a path ect but none have ever gone very far. they are just damaging themselves and public perception by continually coming out and saying 'oh soon, soon we shall have access'. we wont, so aint no point in getting anyones hopes up.

It really is a scandal that such a huge amenity as the Metal Man is closed to the public. You could see it as part of a walk linked to the beach and sandhills that would bring huge footfall to the town, move the tourist product upmarket and greatly enhance the quality of life in the town. Useful comparisons would be hook lighthouse, ardmore round tower and mizen head bridge.

Does anyone know why it cannot be done, how many land owners are involved, what is the history of attempts to open this up are, has there ever been an attempt to CPO the land.

The towers are now (recently) part of a 'non-profit' group in Tramore now along with Brownstown Head IIRC. Headed up by some business persons in the town. Work is 'ongoing' to get access with plans to build a bridge to overcome the problem with it being on private land.

Not sure I see the bridge going ahead tbh and I would fear that it would look absolutely awful. I'm not in agreement with commercialising the walk. I'd prefer the council and the council only did something about it, if possible, to permit access and ensure safety along the edge. Years ago we had access, but not anymore sadly.

we used to walk across the cliff path to get to it from newtown, was dangerous then , dunno what condition its in now though, the landowner would shout at us to get off his land, but we just told him to F off, & legged it
