Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So, how much of your monthly income do you spend on rent?
My guess is most people will be within the 15-20% bracket (i think!!).

    Edit:
    Poll up!

    Edit 2:
And by the way, I'm not doing this to enlighten all of us on how much we spend on rent!
Currently looking for a house and wondering how much is too much! Its purely selfish... :)

About 18% of my net monthly pay

  • Registered Users Posts: 523 ✭✭✭jdooley28

% of take home pay would be a loy higher than 15% for a lot.

If you mean gross you might not be too far wrong, IMO

Are you using gross or net pay for the calculation?

Good point. I used it as a percentage of my monthly net income.

So between 0% and 5%, 20% and 22% and 50% and all-of-it%, are the general conscensus. Good to know!

    20.3% of net pay.

It also depends on what you get for your money. Like I spend about 23%. But that's for my own house. I don't share.
Another person might spend 23% for a room in a shared house. All relative.

Me too, and I don't know how anyone can afford to pay more than that.

You probably wouldn't pay 23% in a shared house. Maybe if it was just one other person.

    35.8%.

As I am separated I have to pay 2/3rds of the mortgage on the family home (can't sell the bloddy thing in this market) as well as rent for the apartment that I live in - it's a killer

About a quarter, it is a bit high really but I can walk everywhere so save a good bit on travel.

Are the people that pay 50%-100% actually being serious? That's madness!

I out only 1 bracket between 50 and 100% because i honestly thought no one would click it. I kind of regret that now, should have broken it down into 4... ah well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Around a third of my net wage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

I have a nice old style apartment (altbau) that I share with my gf in one of the nicer areas of the city. Rent is 10% of my take home pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭duchalla

I spend just under 16% of my net wage on my mortgage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,618 ✭✭✭Mr Freeze

Around 40% of my monthly net.

I thought that was normal till I saw this thread. Clearly I am on peanuts, as my Mortgage aint exactly huge.

  • Registered Users Posts: 452 ✭✭Diapason

Hmmm, roughly 30% of our JOINT net monthly income. And this at the lowest interest rates ever. That's depressing.

Just lets hope ye can afford it if down the line, a partner loses their income for whatever reason. Welcome to capitalism ;)

    Indeed.

When we bought the place I was in a job that paid a lot better, but even then our mortgage "adviser" tried to persuade us to take more. He thought we were mad not to mortgage our bollocks off. I imagine a lot of people in that situation listened to the experts...

    No imagination required I'd say.

How many posters here would admit to borrowing more than they actually needed or living in houses that realistically are too big for their needs?

Im kind of suprised theres no clear "winner" here. I honestly thought that some % bracket would come out with an overwhelming majority, thats far from the case.

Unless after hours is lying to me, but thats just crazy talk.
