Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some of you might not be aware but the Women's Olympic Football starts today with Group E Teams GB playing New Zealand at 4pm. (Groups A,B,C and D are the Men's groups)

Both BBC and Eurosport are showing the game. Coverage on Eurosport appears to finish at 9.45 so I'm assuming they are showing some of the other games also.

    Today's Fixtures are
    25 Jul
    16:00
Women's Football - First Round Group E Great Britain - New Zealand

    25 Jul
    17:00
Women's Football - First Round Group G United States - France

    25 Jul
    17:00
Women's Football - First Round Group F Japan - Canada

    25 Jul
    18:45
Women's Football - First Round Group E Cameroon - Brazil

    25 Jul
    19:45
Women's Football - First Round Group G Colombia - DPR Korea
    >
    25/7
    19:45
Women's Football - First Round Group F Sweden - South Africa

Big stage for the women to show what they can do. :)

I'm hoping Japan 2 of Japan, U.S.A and Brazil reach the final.

GB brought a load of attackers didn't they? More attackers than defenders!

Is this the same as the mens, where the players have to be U.23? Also, which way did qualification work does anyone know?

As far as I'm aware, yes there's an U23 rule also.

Almost the same qualification as the mens except for European teams. The Women's World Cup determined the European qualification.

    Japanese FA are bastards!
The Japanese woman's team took exception at having to fly economy class on a 13 hour flight to Europe, while the men's team flew business class. The Japanese FA said the men fly business class to the Olympics because they are professionals.

That's funny in a 1950s kind of way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,304 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Caught a bit on the BBC this morning about it, if memory serves I'm sure they said the Women's game back in the day used to pull crowds of up to 50,000 then went on to say something about the FA banning them playing in stadiums or something to that effect, crazy!

G.K gets his wish as Carney starts.

Team GB: Bardsley, A Scott, Houghton, Stoney (C), Dieke, J Scott, Asante, Carney, Aluko, Little, Smith

Was there not a similar situation with the FAI a few years back? (players in cattle, big wigs in business), that is brought up as just another case of Roy Keane moaning when people are looking to give out about him?

I'm nearly sure women can be any age in Olympic football .

Afaik Men's football is the only age discriminant sport in the Olympics .

Well the NZ keeper didn't cover herself in glory there did she?

Seems the goalkeeping hasn't improved much in the last 10 years anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,949 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

It annoys me so much that goal keeping can be so ****e.

The two Scottish players didn't sing the National Anthem. Surely they could have come up with a more...universal (isn't the word I'm looking for) anthem?

Scotland is part of Britain and the UK, and the anthem of the UK is God Save the Queen so can't see how they could have had something different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,949 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

I thought God Save The Queen was just the English Anthem...

    Close for GB there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,949 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

I was sure that was in!

In sports where the teams are separate (football and rugby) Wales and Scotland do indeed use different songs (Flower of Scotland and Land of My Fathers/Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau). But in sports where the whole of GB i represented, it's GSTQ.

GB cack themselves in front of goal. Should be 2 or 3 up...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,949 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Canada and Japan has kicked off on the BBC Olympic Channel no. 2

The pitch in Coventry Stadium looks to be immaculate.

Team GB take the lead with a great free kick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭Bob the Seducer

That was Wambach's 139th international goal, catching up to Mia Hamm's record of 158.

That's a shocking miss from New Zealand. Criminal!

Backheel from Ohno to Kawasumi on the edge of the six yard box, shot across goal into the top right.

    Edit: Japan 2-0 up now.

Tried watching the first half of the GB game, really really hard to watch.

Also on the Japanese FA thing, I'd be interested to know for other countries who have professional athletes aswell as boxers (who are amateur) whether they fly the same class.

Crap goal keeping contributes heavily to the Japanese second goal. What was McLeod thinking?!

Watch the U.S game Samich. It's on Eurosport.

    No eurosport :(

It's pretty entertaining when there's goals like, just the first bit of action that was any good was when the GB player headed against the post.

What a goal for the U.S! Unfortunate for the French girl to fall after trying to get the ball down...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,949 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Canada have pulled a goal back. It's odd, every time one team scores in one match, a team in the other match seems to score!

The american's (men and women) seem to rack up a lot of caps. Loads of players on well over 100. Most Europeans are lucky to get near 100.

What was the goalie at there for France? Terrible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭Bob the Seducer

    4-2 USA now.

    Thats poor from the keeper.

The goalies never seem to attack the ball, just hope they get hit by the ball more often than not.
