Not a massive fan of Barritt but I find it odd how people rave about BOD's defensive work so much, yet Barritt who was was probably the best defensive 12 of the past 18 months gets pretty much derided.

Well, he's not Irish. This place in particular holds Irish and non-Irish players to completely different standards.

    You're dead right though, he's a fantastic defensive 12.

You'd think Kearney has only ever played well against SA.

He hasn't been at his best at all this season and I reckon he'll be lucky to tour but you only have to look to last season to see what he offers at his best.

No, but his core strengths are his catching and kicking. He can be a strong runner at times too.

Which I acknowledged they do however kick a good deal more than the popular consensus would lead you to believe.

Yeah I know, similarly SA 4 years ago didn't just kick the ball either.

BOD's defensive work is one facet of his game, with Barritt its almost his whole game.

Jenkins travelling as loosehead prop makes sense to me, as Jenkins is a class act when in top form.

Ignoring Sheridan who starts ahead of him for Toulon though? Is that a strange call?

Any precedence of this happening before?

Not true. He runs great lines and he's a punishing carrier.

Barritt is good defensively, and he does run good lines. But he's limited.....if BOD isn't at the top of his game, it could be a centre partnership which struggles. I'd prefer Tuilagi alongside BOD.

Barritt's foot not looking in great shape at Twickenham right now.

You'd have to wonder what parts of Jenkins' game of late justify his selection, when someone like Sheridan is available. Ryan Grant may end up being Healy's main competition on tour this summer.

Wilkinson making a late claim as well here.

Did he do much beyond kick goals today?

    big defense.

Don't think he's a starter, but to finish a game out, could be clinical and ruthless.

Not really, one beaut of a drop goal alright, but it was a really bad game.

No. He rarely does. He coped with the rush defence well, got back to his forwards. He played sensible rugby and stuck to hos strengths. It was an extremely one dimensional showing from Toulon but that's what they do. They've a Rolls Royce with a Sunday driver behind the wheel. Gets them where they need to be but never utilises the potential.

Plenty of time for him, realistically he's going to be the OH bench option.

Not enough for Lions tests imo. He had some really really poor outings for England towards the end of his international career too.

His step is still outstanding, and he's just a great rugby player, doesn't make mistakes and knows how to do the little simple things that will win you a game when there's inches in it.

He's also still in outstanding shape.

I dunno, he's pretty much out of the running for the first two games.

Wilkinson's interview there is pure and utter class.

    So modest.

Wouldn't go that far. He was genuinely appalling in the last HEC pool game. Showed everything that is potentially wrong if his pack aren't on top.

That said, he would offer a lot in a very specific role for closing out games. The Lions cannot afford to bring someone with such a narrow focus though.

Did he have headphones on it?? If so then he should never be allowed tour.

And who is the alternative ? Farrell is a worse player trying to play the same style, Biggar is average and Flood can't run a backline.

Madigan has yet to play at that high level but he ll travel on utility basis.

    Sexton
    Wilko
    Madigan

That's a solid bunch to bring.

Also, were they any coins involved?

Wilkinson was close to retiring because of an injury issue, maybe he feels he'll need the summer off to recharge to be able to get through next season. Remember the French season starts a couple of weeks before the Rabo/Aviva.

what's the whole coin toss stuff about that's been floating around the forum this weekend?

Some nonsense about POC's ability to look intimidating at the pre-match coin toss, apparently helped his Lions captaincy case.

    Honestly.

Saying Flood can't run a back line as a reason to bring Wilko makes little sense. Wilko passed the ball 12 times in 80 minutes today.

Gatland has suggested he will take two outhalves. They'll be Sexton and Farrell and rightly so. Farrell and Wilko are very similar as unpalatable as that is. If Saracens were on top up front today, he'd be getting the plaudits. He kicks well and makes his tackles. Not as metronomic as Wilko but probably offers more to his backs at this point.

Farrell also covers 12 and 13 which is a significant bonus. Sexton is well ahead now though. Not a vintage crop.

Jamie Heaslip trying to use the power of Jedi mind tricks & Dr Dre to influence the coin toss
