Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Very common in the UK.

There's a need for flexibility in how discrimination law is applied as some groups are more vulnerable than others, says Penny Anderson, author of the Renter Girl blog. "A landlord saying no to a Muslim woman is wrong. But I think a group of Muslim women turning down a white man is OK."

A woman who placed a "Filipino only" advert in a newsagent in Golders Green, north London, explains: "I'm sorry about that. All the people here are Filipino so we need Filipinos."

With this level of racism nit-picking, you'd be too desensitized to recognize racism if it walked up, called you [CENSORED] and spit your face.

    Disgusting.

If an Irish person were abroad and said it'd be nice to live next door to ab Irish person, nobody here would give a sh1t because they'd know what they mean - familiarity is pleasant when you're in a new place.

Why leave Nigeria and come to Ireland, a predominantly ethnically European country, if you want to live around blacks?

    Makes no sense to me.

Yeah, makes no sense to come from a third world country to a first world country with infinitely better prospects.

If the OP's assertion is racist, then every Irish community all over the world is equally as racist. You'll gravitate to people you can relate to, whether it's discussing Tayto crisps or how Shell are making a sh*t of your country.

Nigeria is resource rich nation with a national debt of 30 billion euro. Ireland is a bankrupt windswept rock with a national debt of 124 billion euro.

Yet 39% of them living here are unemployed, another large percentage of them are students and a minority of them are actually working.

If they prefer their own kind, why come here?

The whole concept of racism is grossly misunderstood in modern society. The PC police rule the roost and one must at all times use acceptable terminology. I don't agree, I have friends from foreign shores and we josh all the time with racial slang, they call me 'mick' and I might retort with words like 'greaser' or 'slope'. Its all in good humour and nobody gets offended.

It's almost all that Nodin does, here on b.ie.

He's a pretty intelligent and witty guy when he wants-picking holes in every story that involves people that aren't of Irish descent (whether they are here or not) must get old eventually.

Houses to the left and right are rented to people originally from Nigeria.

Prospective tenant (also from Nigeria) is happy because "it will be nice to live next door to black people".

Depends on the sentiment behind what he said.

If he meant it as in it will be nice to have neighbors that remind him of Africa or something, then no it is not racist.

If he meant it as saying that black people make nicer neighbors than white people, then yes it was racist.

Racism is making a stereotypical assumption about how a person will be based on their skin color or ancestral origin.

If you ain't doing that you ain't being racist.

I dont think hes being racist just a bit stupid. Black is not a race. It doesnt describe a large set of shared features. Theres more difference between an nigerian and a masai than there is between a european and nigerian.

Yes there is. Why does the race of the others matter? Even if you are the only white guy in a housing estate, you're still just one human among many.

No its a color. There is no evidence for race in humans. Even if you go by genetics black doesnt cover one whole race. Also I was highlighting the fact that it would be an extremely unusual thing for a African man to say. A person from east Africa usually can distinguish between himself and a man of west african origin. There is vast differences between people who are collectivily referred to as "black". Do you think theres a lot in common between someone from papua new guinnea and nigera?

I think the statement in itself was racist as he wasnt pointing out id like to live next to Nigerian or even African people he said Black and when colour is introduced it ultimatly becomes racial, ive had many dealings with black people over the years have worked with them and i have to say they would be the first one to wave the banners and bang the drums about racism , if a white person Irish or english or werever else said anything with the black word included they would undoubtedly be branded a racist.

I have seen it happen here and it has happened to me here but it doesnt really bother me coz i can be a bit racist especially when i see housing/welfare and other Irish things being given priority to non irish residents and with all honesty in the town i live i would always opt to use an irish taxi driver than a foreign driver personal preference. Im sure this statement will have me branded a racist but ya see this face ...its the i dont care face.

The "blacks and whites" thing came from America and the slave trade did it? It seems to have just spread across the globe with the rest of American culture.
Even when people say "Irish is not a race, we're Caucasian" it annoys me, and there's far less genetic variety there. People seem to define race in terms of colour mainly. It's just a word used to describe different peoples. "Peoplediness" just wouldn't work. Also weird is the way some perceive the peoples of the world in terms of "whites and non-whites." As if white people represent one half of the circle of bloody civilisation! It's a putting them all in the same boat, belittling little culture that's evolved I think.

Indeed! The term black is actually a really stupid term imo. You could be describing any human from a multitude of countries. Africans also vary drastically in appearance depending on what part of Africa their from.

Ofcourse they are coz there all still strugglin, strugglin to get the extra fuel allowance , mobile phones, socialisin money Hmmmmm im offto dunnes to get some shoe polish ill be in a 3 bedroom house this day next week.

I worked with an African lad in a warehouse a few years back hed been in the country 2 months was working the same job as i was earning the same money as i was but on top he was given a socialising allowance on a friday so he could increase his social standing within the community he was given a pushbike to get to and from work he was also given a mobile phone so he could be contacted. This was all told to me by himself so its first hand information and he made no bones about telling me about these extra perks with a big smile on his face , now theres no wonder Irish people are feeling discriminated against in their own country because the simple fact of the matter is we are.

Another thing that people often have misconceptions about is the term "Caucasian". Genetically speaking, there are plenty of dark skinned peoples who are Caucasian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_race

The "whites / non-whites" thing is pretty stupid when you consider many "non-whites" have more in common with Swedish people genetically than they do with Sub-saharan people.
