Another lucky break for those of us in west Donegal yesterday, only 0.8mm of rain all day leaving the monthly total at just 11.2mm. Mostly sunny again today

From Tuesday onwards next week is looking good for this part of the country at least. After a dull, wet wet wet, miserable "summer" in Cork let's hope we're heading for a repeat of the 1985 pattern of an Indian Summer.

    Waterford Whispers News
Astronomy Ireland: Rare Passing of The Sun Visible Over The Country Today
BY COLM WILLIAMSON · AUGUST 22, 2012 BREAKING NEWS, LIFESTYLE ·

STARGAZERS from across the country gathered today to watch one of the rarest astronomical spectacles Ireland has ever seen.

The sun made a slow transit across sky this morning, the last such passing that will be visible from Ireland for at least a year.

The visible passing of the sun happens very rarely over Ireland due to low lying clouds of rain which linger on the misery of its people.

During today’s pass, the sun took the form of a circular yellow ball of fire slowly shifting from east to west across the sky.

However, it was not all plain sailing. Panic ensued in rural parts of the country shortly after first light as not everyone was made aware of the astronomical event.

Gardai have so far reported over 4 individual cases of human sacrifices to the sun in counties Galway, Kerry, Mayo and Lietrim.

“I suppose people were just a little scared at the time. Not everyone reads the news so it must have come as a bit of a shock to them.” said a Garda spokesman earlier.

Irish Astronomers have warned spectators not to look directly at the roundy object as it can burn the retina.

“The sun is the closest star to the earth and can be very dangerous if looked at with the naked eye.” said one crazy astronomer with bushy hair and a beard.

Today’s passing of the sun is only the ninth since 2004, and the last until sometime in May next year.

It could almost be true. :D

It's the way it is here in Ireland

Each summer is the worst ever. It builds up over 6-7 years. We get a decent summer then we go through year on year of worst summer.

Best thing about this weather, it's still warm enough to justify a larger bottle of Bulmers.

I was a wee lad but all the memories from that era are golden summers with weeks of uninterrupted sunshine.

I think that's part of peoples problems with summer weather....memories as a child! :)

People have a tendancy to keep/hold on to (good) memories of the good weather and sunshine as a child but most peoples memories of the bad weather have been forgotten/erased!

The summer weather in the 80's for many of the summers (not all) was no better than it has been for the last couple of summers.

It is often good weather comes when experts and models aren't indicating it. Mention of good weather within a week by forecasters when the weather is poor usually mean disappointment.
