I was thinking of a thread where people could put up a couple (not more than 3) pics of places they went to in NZ that might have been off the beaten track a little bit. None of the Auckland Sky Tower, Bungy Jumping or Sky Diving anywhere, or the Tongario crossing for example as people would know about these already.

I hope it's ok with the Mods.

At the top of Mt. Bealey in Arthurs Pass (about 2000m up I think and took a few hours to get to the top).

    lakeohau1.jpg
Snowboarding in Lake Ohau on the South Island. It is a club field, I think, and there was only maybe 30/40 people on it at the most on the day we went there.

    whangarei3.jpg
View back to Whangarei from the Bream Head track, a very enjoyable (hard in places though) days tramp.

Only once so far. Going up is actually easy enough. Coming down is horrendous.

Its crazy the way some country roads suddenly turn into gravel tracks without any warning. I recently nearly lost control of my car when I came round a bend at 100Km and the road suddenly went gravel. Some very careful braking and gentle steering kept me alive. Its like the councils just run out of money and dont bother finishing roads properly.

The same with one lane bridges, when they build a bridge across a river in the countryside, do they really save that much money by making it only wide enough for one car at a time? :) Make it ****ing too.

    Great pic of Lake Rotoiti!

Is it from the shore or a boat?

My missus took it from one of the little wooden jetties. Beautiful spot.

Aye :) I normally hang out in the Photography board. Moved to NZ last June and having a total ball with the photography ever since. Amazing place!

    Most deadly mountain in NZ!
Fair play to you climbing it CM!

Great mountain, Until the weather decides to change in a micro-second.
Nice to see New Plymouth in the sun for a change to! :D;)

only because it's so easily accessible and so high. lot of novices think they can do it easily and then get in trouble, combined with the changeable weather. It's not actually physically difficult at all, just a long slog :)

Just came across this thread while looking for something else. Have been in NZ for 7 months now and travel is eventually coming to an end. Cant wait to get back here with better equipment, landscape photographers dream.

Road south of Hotikita, South Island

    lkzeb.jpg
Whiritoa, Coromandel Peninsula. As a surfer I love this image, its a great wave, but the dramatic sky also makes it.

    121fup2.jpg
Windswept Tress, Slope Point. This is the most southern point in NZ, obviously it gets windy down here!

    That second image is brilliant!

not a great photo but I love what it shows, the quieter roads around here tend to turn green after a couple of years due to whatever lichen grows on them. Doesn't affect the grip etc in my experience, even on the bike.

if there's one country that's a photographer's dream, it's NZ :) was over there for three (way too short) weeks last year, here are some shots from the North Island anyway:

Orakei Korako (near-ish Lake Taupo, very cool volcanic site)

Mangawhai heads beach (about 1 hr north of Auckland I think?)

    Cathedral cove (Coromandel Peninsula)
