Both are for 2m & 70cm Mobile Repeater Market. IMO Waste of money as they are just 2M (145MHz)& 70cm (435MHz) FM Transmitters with a bit of VHF /UHF wideband receive. Not much to choose between them.

I'd rather spend that amount of money on something with SSB and HF too. Also you need to take it out of car all the time. I had an Icom IC7800 stolen via smashed window at top of driveway at 10pm!

    Duh! Slaps forehead

The Shack Rig is a FT101ZD MKIII

Mobile & QRP is FT817ND, though I have homebrew 20W portable PA with internal 12V Gel battery for it.

Original poster says YAESU not ICOM.

And pardon me for using this phrase but ... ''should've to spec-savers'' :-)

T'wouldnt be good if an IC7800 would go missing, them costing nearly 10k. Any ideas for what to buy instead?

FLEX5000 with all the trimmings. [NOT FOR CAR REALLY]
    FLEX3000 [NOT FOR CAR REALLY]
    TS590
TS480 with all the trimmings (about 300 Euro cheaper than a TS590)

Just in case people are interested or didn't know there are two new Flex transceivers and a receiver on the way. Big money.
