Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Assignment 88: The Theme is Refraction - I didn't see it on the list and hope there will be a bit of a challenge and some fun in this for everyone

    The rules:

-Photos must be posted within 2 weeks of the day the task was set– so the closing time/date is 12:00pm on August 15th 2012.
    -No old photos.
-Only photos taken with this task in mind qualify, therefore, the photo must be taken after 12:00pm on August 1st 2012
-Photos must be on the given task.
-ONE photo per post. But submit as many posts as you like.
-Stretch yourself – there is no limitation to what you can do to produce the image.
-The next task/subject is to be chosen by the person who has the most thanks after their post at the closing date/time (the post must include a photo).

    Good Luck!

A first attempt at taking a refracted shot. I just happened to noticed the light on the floor being refracted from the unframed edge of a large mirror. Then I placed a large white board on the wooden floor, blocked the light with myself and took the shot using the timer.

Is everyone just holding a wine glass up to the TV?

There was a 'barbed ' remark about the 'wine glasses' used in this challenge.

A remark which gained a good few thanks.

And YES I used a wine glass.

But then again 10 days ago I had never heard of refraction - other than from some distant day in a Christian Brother classroom when you got a slap if you didn't know your pipette from you bibette or your conductor from your convector.

But I read up on it- mostly online and following stuff I read I drilled hole in a bulb - filled it with water ( on the third attempt after 2 shattered ones) and spent a hour or so in the garden trying to figure out a good shot.

I then thought that 'Bolt' was the man of the moment and tried to figure out how to get him into a photo - hence the wine glass.

I often notice that the 'hurlers on the ditch' don't bother entering any of the challenges .

Or voting for any of the entrants.

They are far too good for that.

In explaining my position on 'refraction' -I was trying to mirror the average boards photo taker.

Most of us had never taken a 'refraction' photo before I'd say.

    But at least we tried.

I knew I should have just picked 'metal' as the challenge

I thought it would be a bit of fun & a bit of a test for everyone (I think that's what the assignments are about), sorry if some people didn't like it but I'm sure if you never tried something like refraction before you learned something (I certainly did, I now know how hard it is to take a picture of a water droplet #fail)

lets get back to the photos & look forward to the new challenge on Wed, there were some great pictures in this so far (as seen by the amount of thanks)

Congratulations to Goolay :) "The Eraser" picture is the winner of assignment 88!

And well done everyone else there were some great pictures in there.

Now over to you Goolay for the new challenge...

  • Registered Users Posts: 604 ✭✭✭Goolay

    Woo, thanks guys.

Kind of wish I had spent a wee bit more time on it now, was more of a proof of concept pic really. Nice example of refraction but not the best photo in the world :)

Okeydoke, I'll put my thinking pants on for Assignment 89 (feel free to PM with suggestions) and will aim to have it up by this evening.

    thanks again!
