Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Maybe she's been traveling too much. It's the Spanish who pronounce it "wiffy".

She very nearly became a TD in 2011. Twas very close and she made a show of herself at the count. She will get annihilated at the next election (if she runs).

Another one in the senate looking for headlines complaining about the the former Greek finance minister leaving his office after resigning with his girlfriend on the back of his moped with no helmet, the Skibbereen Eagle is watching you Minister.
Do they honestly think that this gets them credit for the next GE?

She is definitely running. I can't see what market she hopes to capture. If she couldn't get in in 2011 when FG swept to power, considering all the various blunders and scandals she's managed to create since, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of her succeeding this time around. It will be an expensive run as well, now that she's an independent. Really can't see her taking another term as a Senator either unless she gets in on the educational panel or something.

What did she do at the count in 2011? I'm almost afraid to ask but can't resist.

I just heard secondhand accounts. I'll leave it to someone who was there to give the details

While defeat is not easy for anyone, I gather there was nothing stoic about her on that occasion

She used the correct pronunciation earlier in the speech and used wiffy as the French pronunciation
Well ladeda, I pronounce wifi the french way because I go on holidays in France all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,186 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

She used the correct pronunciation earlier in the speech and used wiffy as the French pronunciation while discussing tourists looking for Wi-Fi in restaurants, as it happens it wasn't even a mispronounciation.
However had it been, denouncing her as "wholly inadequately informed" is a crazy over reaction. She said she uses public Wi-Fi herself during that snippet of infamous wiffy speech. That's more important to me than her pronunciation.Maybe she made a typo somewhere to, can we take the risk?perhaps we should throw her into the sea and be done with it.
If you've an issue with the substance of her speech fine, if you're basing this indignant outrage on an incorrect pronunciation I think you're misguided.

The fraping comment was very poorly explained I agree but amidst the senators that we have, even our politicians, I doubt few of them would have done a better job. I know people in their 20s who wouldn't have a clue what fraping was, or indeed other teenage culture buzzwords.
and i bet they are not trying to push legislation on it either

She has two teenage children, she should have asked them before embarrassing herself

  • Registered Users Posts: 154 ✭✭SameHorse

if she didn't know what 'fraping' was, she could have done two things:

1] not brought it up and spoken on it in the Seanad Éireann of all places.
2] googled it for all of 5 minutes, before even dreaming to speak on it in the
    Seanad Éireann of all places.

it's incredibly worrying that an individual who appears to be this much of a luddite is trying to legislate, or influence legislation, on web/technology issues.

but then again we've had finance ministers supposedly with no bank accounts, who account for unexplained money by claiming they won it on the horses and have no way to prove it. we've had morbidly obese ministers for health ...

Ireland might as well be called 'bizarr-o land' ... or 'conflictofinterestsopolus'

    or something along those lines.

She was screaming that it was "my seat" (Kyne, FG took the last seat) and ordered a number of recounts. They were trying to find the extra votes she needed or show some of Kynes as spoiled. The Galway West count was last to finish by a long way.

Sorry, I don't want to derail this thread, but James Charity is one feckin eejit:
Councillor Charity, who is also a barrister, says the main reason for leaving the party is what he calls Renua’s u-turn on water charges.

He also cites a lack of support from the party in relation to the lack of space in Annaghdown cemetery.
Yes, James, like you I'm shocked, shocked I tells ya, that a party that's all about reform at the national level is not bothered about whether there is space in Annaghadown cemetry

I apologise for that gag so awful that it may well form the central plank of an Advertiser editorial or waggish tweet. And if it does, I'm ****ing invoicing you.

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames is launching her independent campaign for a Dáil Seat in Galway West/South Mayo with a ‘Night at the Dogs’.

She's gotten a ridiculous amount of negative publicity since then, and back then she was also on the Fine Gael ticket, which gathered a lot of support.

    "Binders full of teenage girls".

It gets even better; if they're the same group I'm thinking of, they're being "advised" into litigation by some of the stars of the Freemen thread. Watch out for any fundraising drives there.

I feel I've stood up for her an embarrassing amount in this thread but, here I go again.,,
In the youtube she was responding to another person's very serious address to the Seanad on over 100 teenage girls in Ireland who have been chronically, some seriously ill and hospitalised, since their HPV vaccine. The person in the initial address said some parents had not been advised of possible side effects or reasons why some kids were unsuitable for the vaccine. She was right to highlight what had been said and say this needed to be looked into,it was a measured but responsible response. Not every negative comment on effects of vaccines reflects an "antivaxer"stance.
It's an instance where a headline is written just because it's her and a serious issue gets overlooked because making fun of her is the thrust of the headline, commentary and public comments.
I know a girl who has been ill since that vaccine, so ill she's been referred to a hospital in London where they have told her family they think she did have a reaction to the vaccine or that it triggered an underlying illness. Count a hundred kids in that position and they deserve a discussion about them, not a fidelma bandwagon good laugh.

There's been no link between the HPV vaccine and the girls. Contrary to what whack groups like the National Citizens Movement are trying to push.

No link has been established at this point. Gardasil, the main component of the vaccine, is presently under review by the European Medicines Agency for being implicated in causing two serious conditions, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome can be particularly devastating if severe to the point of being utterly disabling.
If parents aren't being given full information and contre indications, the claim FHE was responding to in the Seanad and the subject of the meetings to be held, then that is an issue worthy of discussion.

Swine flu vaccine was not found to have serious safety concerns until it was administered to the public and some people developed narcolepsy as a result,80% are children including a small number of Irish children. They have since received payouts from governments who administered the vaccine as a link has been it and narcolepsy has now been established.

It's essential to keep an open mind and at least investigate these things if they arise. Certainly if there are established contre indications they need to be flagged for parents. It's as irrational to shout down every negative experience of a vaccine without knowing all the facts as it is to be an antivaxer
