The three ships on the Waterford coat of arms relate to the feud between Waterford, the Powers of Dunhill and their allies the O'Driscolls of Baltimore. After the O'Driscolls captured a ship bound for Waterford the good people of Waterford went to Cork and sacked their stronghold.

They returned to Waterford with three galleys they had captured which were added to the city crest. This was in the 16th century if i recall the story correctly.

I think the full story is on the county museum website.
