There doesn't seem to be any thread on here yet so i said I'd start one. Does anyone have any ideas/guesses what's going to come up in the leaving 2013, from reading past exam papers it's easy enough to gage a relatively good guess.! So these are the subjects I'm doing, all HL except maths (because I'm terrible at maths); English, Irish, Maths, History, Economics, Home Ec, Biology and L.C.V.P :-) History and Economics are probably my favourites but I like Home-ec too :) My aim for the leaving is 500 points, I hope to study general nursing in UL next year.! I'm not by any means a genius I just work really really hard but I'm still finding it a struggle :( I'm currently half way through my mocks which are going well for the most part :) I don't want this thread to be about only studying a couple of things from each subject because that's way too risky but maybe topics to focus your attention on more than others :)
So that's me, any help or study advice/notes would be greatly appreciated, I'll try my best to keep up with this thread and post as often as I can :)

I honestly enjoy Plath's poetry so much, and she seems due up... but I can't help imagining the department doing another 'nah, just screwing with ya, mwahaha' on students with her again this year. I can study her poetry with such ease but I'm too scared to bank on anyone!

Lads just because Plath didnt come up last year it doesn't mean that she will come up this year. Its up to them whether they want her on this year. Personally I feel that if she does come up this year the question will be VERY HARD, again trying to catch out those who are only going to study her.

Are their any Irish predictions??? I am studying Irish at home... I sat the LC 10 years ago so any bit of assistance would be grateful =)

I might be wrong, but I'm think that there was a year before with no female poets at all, and there's nothing to stop them making it all male poets to throw us off anyways. I'm going to tryyyy to learn 3 or 4 in detail, and a fifth as a backup because you really don't know how it could go on the day. Imagine the feeling if you go into the exam and your poet doesn't come up :l

You'll have to learn everything for maths! There's no way to predict a brand new exam, especially when you can't pick and choose the questions like before. At least this year the paper is very likely to be marked easier :)

Please someone help! Im struggling with Irish but I need to pass higher. What am I supposed to study for the prose and poetry??? My teacher doesnt give any notes, just goes through fiuntas..Do I really need ALL that?? :O

Is there specific headings for higher level?

    HELP!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 Ellenkc

I do think Plath is likely this year, but I'm avoiding her like the plague. I've always found Mahon the easiest to write on, aside from Rich, and Wordsworth seems pretty likely too.
Maths will be marked very easily I'd say. I've heard from a few teachers that the pass rate last year was up in the high 90's . I'm just thanking my lucky stars that I'm in a pilot school, because they have to make us look good!

My Irish teacher said her friend who is also an Irish teacher predicts the essay titles spot on every single year and has tipped An Coras Oideachais this year. Take from that what you will. :p I hope she's right!

First of all, your Irish standard doesn't need to be as good as it is in Fiuntas. :P For the prose for example, as far as I know, all the marks are going for your knowledge of the poem/poet, and 0 marks for your actually language. It's similar for the prose, but I think there might be 10 marks or something for language, but the rest for knowledge.

You do kind of have to know what's wrote in the book like athrá for example in some poems. If it's in the book, you should learn it, but of course put it into your own Irish. The standard in the book is unnecessarily far too high! It's a similar story for the prose.

For the essay, make sure you know your vocab and grammar fairly inside out! A lot of marks here for language, so it's vital if you want to do well.

no... they often only ask 3 micro for long questions that would be a quarter of the long questions you wouldn't know, because we only do 4. they also ask macro in short questions which could be up to half the short questions you never know ,i don't think thats enough to get a b and this is also presuming you did brilliant in all the micro questions you answer.

Well still know all micro really well! i'm pretty sure they can never ask less than 3 micro long questions , so prepare to answer 3 and if your lucky there could be 4, if not you don't need to know the whole macro course , i would pick a few of the most common ones say national income/debt , international trade or another , check the papers for which topics came up most often in the last 10 years. I would also ask your teacher. For short questions - you will know all micro then again prepare the most common macro ones , go over the papers and also your book, go through each chapter and pick out important definitions , know all calculations for micro and macro, this is just my advise :) good luck

so what if none of those 4 come up?
i know you said you will know those inside out.. so i hope you mean you will know some other not as well as a back up.

In relation to English, since there's always at least one Irish poet on, and there's technically only two Irish poets on the course this year, Mahon and Kinsella... Could they not put Kinsella on again? I know he was up last year, but in fairness, Mahon has been up more than Kinsella. This could be this year's curveball from the department

does anyone know has a poet ever come up 2 years in a row before?

Yes. Our teacher made out a table of poets that have come up, all the way back to 2003. Plath was up 2003, 2004. Yeats was up 2010, 2011

Personally for English I reckon Wordsworth, Kinsella, Rich, and Hopkins will be up, (yes I realise 2 of those came up last year, that's why I reckon they'll be on again, SEC and their crazy ways :P)

Regardless of what way you look at English this year you can't help but think 'no, maybe the department will throw in the curve ball this year and put ... on'. I'm not sure about Plath seen as last year everyone was banking on her and she never appeared, but it is her 40th anniversary this year so you never know. However if she does come up majority of the country is going to attempt her. I will know Mahon & Bishop inside out I reckon. I know the mocks aren't anything to go by but Mahon, Bishop, Plath and Wordsworth featured.

I wonder if the Department enjoy knowing that we are here quivering at the thought of a curveball..
As for myself, I know it's not good to speculate and predict but Wordsworth doesn't feature in my papers at all (except for sample papers) as far as I could see (maybe I was a little tired)
My teacher has done five poets with us but I really don't care for Shakespeare.
I will hopefully be going into the exam knowing: Plath, Mahon, Hopkins and Wordsworth inside out. I would prefer Plath or Mahon though :)

For the Irish essays , I think something about the future of the Irish Language will crop up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭0mega

I am fully confident that if you know Bishop, Mahon and Plath inside out you will get at least one question out of them and likely two. I would also highly doubt that Rich will come up again.

I think one of Wordsworth and Shakespeare will come up, but not both.

Anyone care to have a go at predicting Macbeth?

I hope your prediction is completely wrong! I'd have only Hopkins done from those, and he's my worst poet out of all!

    I'll be studying:

    Sylvia Plath
    Elizabeth Bishop
    Derek Mahon

Back ups: Adrienne Rich and Shakespeare/Kinsella

All my teachers have told us along the way the departments takes into account the press reactions to the papers. Eg a physics paper one year was to find the speed of a bullet. There was up road as the department were seen as promoting violence. A gun question has never came up since.

Also with English there is generally a female poet as the department needs to show equality. Plus generally a Irish peot to show its promoting Irish culture Or some BS like that.

Any tips form ur teachers about what topics due for Hons?
    marriage and eggs
    elective- special needs and poverty
    that's what we think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 662 ✭✭✭aimzLc2

study everything! :) honestly.. i think home ec is the most unpredictable subject on the leaving cert , they don't go by patterns so don't try to make one, i do get that you want to focus more on certain areas so yea i heard poverty too , lipids, micro biology but don't look into it too much ;)

I would agree with the poster below learn everything! My gut is q4 household technology. I think microbiology could come up for q2/3 and lipids for q1. A special diet for q2 but again not guaranteed (make sure you know correct menu format and include drink!) Please learn all of your elective it is worth the same marks as your journal! Practice practice practice q1 a's as there is a knack to getting full marks! Again I would just like to say don't bank on predictions learn everything the sec do what they want! And even put up questions that are incorrect! E.g 2009 q1 quorn and vegans!

I think it is coming to the time of the year where people begin to post their predictions on what they think will appear on the paper in June , i know the examiners are trying to trick us out by trying to make the exams as unpredictable as possible , but it it still achievable to predict things.
I for one feel Nazi Propaganda or Technology of Warfare will show up on the Dictatorship section in History

From reading through the exam papers, a female poet has come up every year and the only three females on the course for this year are Plath, Rich and Bishop. Personally I'm banking on Plath and Rich to come up. (Or hoping would be the better word)

you can really never predict art history. Besides you answer 3 questions out of 21, you don't need to predict! :P

NO... that is 3, there is 8 on the course , the other 5 could easily come up, you need to learn 5.

I went to a grinds school for Easter and the home ec teacher thinks that this years Q1 will be on lipids. Again it's only a guess do don't rely on it too much!

It makes sense if you look at past papers patterns to be lipids but they are always trying to reduce predictability so i would just study everything equally then maybe spend a little extra time on lipds.

    My history predictions:

    Nazi Propaganda/Nazi State

    Land Question/1886 General Election

1913 Strike and Lockout/Anglo Irish Treaty

That's all I'm studying from the 100 mark essays, I might add one to the dictatorships and democracies section like Italian Fascism but I hate studying Britain and France.
