    Hi There,

I'm looking to set up a website and offer direct advertising space to clients. The main clients who will be interested in availing of banner advertising would be educational institutions. I will primarily use a CPM (Cost per Mille/Impression) pricing structure/ However, I don't know what rate of CPM to charge? I have never done online advertising before. I understand that it will depend largely on volume of site traffic. But what could you charge for a site with an average site traffic, what is a decent number of visitors to have?

Any advice, ideas? Have you done this before? Any inisghts would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks,

    Laura.

    Hi Laura,
Banner advertising (CPM advertising) is usually a poor option for new sites and it's a common mistake I see webmasters make. They think, "Oh, I'll set up a website, put up some banner ads and make my millions".

Not the case unfortunately. You really need MASSIVE volume to make it work, especially in Ireland. You'd need at least a few million ad impressions to make enough money to support yourself full time and that's no easy task.

Then there's the topic of your website. This has a huge influence as it determines your audience who are what the advertiser is really buying.

The most successful websites I know or have run are those who that were created out of a passion first, put the audience first and built as a labour of love. The advertising and monetization ALWAYS came last for sites that use banner advertising as their revenue source.

Take my advice. Forget about monetizing and focus on building an amazing site first. When your site is ready, the advertisers will come to you.
