Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

However, there seems to be an awful lot of really, really sh1t tattoo artists in the country. In the wee town near me there are three tattoo parlours and the quality of their work is absolutley appalling.

i posted this lads work before, http://www.victorportugal.com/
insane detail, from uruguay based in poland i think.

Please, please, please tell me (lie to me if you have to) that the first time you saw it you said, "nice tattoo....BOOM!!!

    I am a tattoo artist.

    Hi bodice ripper,

Just out of curiosity, what training do you have to do to become a tattoo artist? (other than health and safety stuff). Do you need to do an apprenticeship or become a member of a trade organisation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,681 ✭✭✭bodice ripper

That still doesn't encompass "everybody". Nobody can make an absolute claim regardless of how many ages/social classes/careers/cultures they have encountered.

Am I somehow skewing the sample? How many hundreds of people before it is a reasonable sample size?

I said it sometimes works out for the person. Bad ideas sometimes do.

Some people do apprenticeships, others do not.

Getting these tattoos is demonstrably terrible idea, for everybody. End of ****ing story.

Sample sizes don't mean that you can make absolute claims.

Is there any minimum compulsory training?

    What?

how many games of russian roulette would you need to see before you could say doing so is absolutely a bad idea?

You may you feel you will get away with it, and you might. It is probably best to take the possible outcome seriously when making the decision.

Russian roulette = neck tattoos, really? Neck tattoos potentially lead to death?

I'm not looking for advice from you but thanks all the same.

nope. The only gauge of skill is portfolio. almost no one asks to see one.

    they should.

it was an analogy. I have my hands tattooed, as does everyone I know.

You don't have to take advice from me. I don't care if people listen to me, I still have to say it. People ought to think about these things more.

It wasn't a very good analogy. Apples and oranges, some might say.

You already said yourself numerous times in the thread, do people who look down on people with tattoos not realise that they do think about these things before they get tattoos.

Do I need to point out the difference between "idea" and "outcome"?

Do you need to be so patronising?

I assume the second half of your post is a general post for people considering neck tattoos and not me individually. As you have said yourself already, most people who get a tattoo will have considered it in great detail beforehand, especially on such a prominent area of their body (as would most reputable tattoo artists when it comes to certain areas of the body).

Like all tattoos - some look really good, some don't.

I like well done neck tattoos personally. I've promised myself one when I'm 50 and employment prospects aren't such a priority. As it is I can cover up all but one of my many tattoos with a t-shirt and trousers.

I do admire people who commit to neck/facial tattoos. As was said you are of course closing a lot of employment doors but at the same time you are purposefully choosing to close the door on a "mac'life", fair play to those who understand the pitfalls and make the decision to get tattooed anyway despite societies tendency to pigeonhole people.

The first experience I've had with a neck tattoo is when I noticed it on a guy when he was in a very compromising position :o

Since then I have thought of getting a small neck tattoo under my collar line or in an other place but I'm so fussy about tattoos and especially bad ones that I'd probably want to design my own.

I think they really show you up as an interesting and fun person so it's no harm to me if I see people with them.

I have only seen then on girls,at least they can cover it up with long hair.
Any facial, neck or hand tattoo is a definite no no inmo.

trolling is for attention seeking morons

    not trolling just my opinion

people get tattoos so others ask them all about their tattoos. Its simple attention seeking.

Look at me, please look at me.

    Vanity, plain and simple

"You have a flying unicorn on your wrist. Thats so cool. What does it mean?"

When someone puts a tattoo on their neck, in a place which is constantly visible they seek attention ALL THE TIME

I suppose it would be a handy to have one if you were a bouncer or in some sort of job where a high level of intelligence is not needed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 330 ✭✭mongdesade

They just are. Generally, I don't mind tattoos but neck tattoos make you look cheap and skangery, IMO. Most people I've met with them have been total scobes/gang members. Maybe part of it is that they can't really be hidden, so anyone who ever wants to get a 'respectable' job can't have one. Like hand tattoos.

I'm calling bull**** on this...I have my neck tattooed with a heavy duty padlock & chain to remind me of my punk years, I have a regimental tattoo on my left hand & my head is tattooed with traditional Maori designs.

I am neither a scobe nor a gang member, although I am a member of a motorcycle club...not a gang

I also have a respectable job...I'm the security manager at a semi-state facility & have been in the security industry at a higher level for 20+ years.

It's the 21st century FFS, tattooing is a recognised art form & a form of personal expression.

Stop being so fúcking judgemental & predjudicial

I am calling bull**** on this. Why do you need a tatoo of a padlock and chain around your neck to remind you of your punk years? Would you not remember otherwise? Are you a Maori? Do you need reminding of your years hunting Moa and kiwi birds?

Who recognises tatooing as an art form (apart from tatoo artists and people who get tatoos). A similar argument could be made for porn being an art form!

People get tatoos because of an image they want to portray. People who get these maori tatoos and neck tatoos generally do so as they want to have themselves seen as hard men or rebels.

Stop being so condescending. Nobody 'needs' a tattoo but it's a form of self expression and entirely his call on what he wants to do. I wouldn't judge him for it at all, and I have no tattoos!

Tattooing is recognised as an art form and a way for people to express themselves. It makes you more unique and shows off your personality. No harm done at all.

Your views are so backwards and gone. Young people or a lot of people do not think that way anymore. Get with the times, be more open minded and stop being so judgemental. Shows you up more than those 'hard men' and 'rebels' when you make such strong dismissive comments like that.
