Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This is ridiculous. Can they not give us anything?!!
What do you think? Is this just lazy journalism or is it the Brits trying to add more medals to their tally by claiming Katie?

    Source
Katie Taylor has joined the ranks of Andy Murray and Gareth Bale.

She is winning, so apparently she is British.

The Daily Telegraph is playing a blinder today.

After posting a picture of the Dutch bronze medal winning equestrian team under a headline relating to the British gold medal winning equestrian team (easy mistake to make, sure don’t Britain wear orange too?) they have now gone and claimed Katie Taylor is British.

    Ehhh no...

She hails from Bray, not Britain.

Them across the water can keep their hands off.

They have received plenty of medals so far in London.

Katie is our 4-time World champion, 5-time European champion and soon to be Olympic champion.

It's just lazy work, it's the consequence of people in the sports department at papers been forced to write about sports they've never heard of or like simply because the olympics are on and noone else has a knowledge of them.

On the other hand - it's a one-time opportunity to sneakily offload Bray to the UK. Win!

Its beginning to look like the mistake was made because her dad is British, or maybe it was just ignorance or mischief by the Telegraph?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,769 ✭✭✭GSF

Its a mistake, not so deep plot. Papers are put together to such tight deadlines it is inevitable. Try writing 30,000 words each & every day.

Both the Daily Mirror and the Express both printed pictures of the Dutch show jumping team instead of the GB team today by mistake.

Irony. The article claiming the British took the Irishwoman in the same way they took a Scotsman and a Welshman.
Unless I've mistaken being Scots or Welsh IS being British hence the article fingerpointing the mixing up of geopolitical national bounderies opens up with a blunder by implying that the Welsh and the Scots are not British.

I think Samual L jackson summed up the British attitude to claiming other people's achievments as their own:
Anyway in answer to your question, similar comments were indeed made on the TV Special ‘SWAT – The Movie’. In the programme Colin is considered a very successful ‘fish out of water’ in LA and the line of questioning was exploring how the Americans view him. Kate was ‘claiming’ Colin as our own in an ‘inclusive’ It went like this.
KATE THORNTON: Now lets talk about Colin because in the UK he’s become the man of the moment.
SAMUEL L.JACKSON: Really? Only in the UK?
KT: Well everywhere but we kind of claim him as our own because he’s from Ireland.
SLJ: You can’t claim him because he’s from Ireland.
KT: Well we do because it’s close by. (laughter)
SLJ: Ok. That’s the source of all the conflict over there. You people always claiming the Irish as yours. We got a little problem just like that here called slavery but that’s ok we don’t need to talk about that so lets go. (more laughter)
KT: Well Colin is a very well paid slave.
    SLJ: Ok good.
    KT: As are you.
    SLJ: Yeah all right.
KT: What did you know about him before you came to work with him on this project?
SLJ: I knew he was a hot, young, Irish actor who was good looking and I talked to a couple of people about him. I talked to Bruce about him and I talked to some script supervisors that had worked with him on a couple of things and they all loved him.
KT: So you checked him out?
    SLJ: Yeah.

Sure we claim British people as our own all the time even if they only have a whiff of Irish about them,

    Dermot O' Leary,
    The Beatles,
    The Gallagher brothers
    & countless UK football players

    etc...........

I've seen multiple varients of that Samuel L. Jackson/Kate Thornton interview pop up over the years yet I've never met anyone who's seen it and it's not up on Youtube. How odd.

FYI, dermot said live on big brother a few years ago that he's Irish, not English.

Thankfully I've never heard any Irish person trying to claim either of those clowns, same with O Leary

Never heard anyone try and claim the Beatles though, who are the definition of Liverpudlians

    What are you on about?

Never heard of The Beatles being deemed Irish.

    O'Leary is actually Irish.

The Gallaghers are British but of Irish background.

As for the footballers, they are not countless and they claim to be Irish not the other way around.

wouldent know, never watched big brother.

And any media here in Ireland, TV or published word has referred to the above mentioned as Irish.
Any one of those people, in an interview in Ireland always gets the "tell us how Irish you are so we can love you more" question!!
