Green Lantern is a bad film. Very bad. But it has a very clear narrative. It fumbles a lot and has a CGI suit for some reason but the story is coherent, the title character acts like he should and with purpose and the villain feels like a genuine threat. There's a million things that should have been done better but it beats the crap out of BvS and SS on story alone. Incidentally, the animated movie Green Lantern: First Flight is practically the same film but 10x better.

I notice neither of the Ghost Rider movies are in your bottom 3. Thus Friday night, get yourself a pizza and some beers and give them a go. So bad it's good!

I enjoyed the first GR in a "so bad it's good" kinda way, and it wins points for the Phantom Rider. Didn't watch the 2nd though.

Have to admire Snyder for sticking to the plan if nothing else, looks like Superman will have one more internal struggle to battle with.

The second one is weird. It feels like a soft reboot more than a sequel. It's horrible though. I have them both on DVD and watch them every few months because I'm a masochist, apparently!

So Zack Snyder tweeted a photo of Batman's new tactical gear, I'm on my phone so can't link, not that it would be much good the picture's so dark I can barely make it out.

Don't like that cowl at all, looks more like catwoman than batman.

Nightowl is EXACTLY what I thought.. and the nose looks a little Pinocchio-esque! Although it's probably just the angle..

The mask has an amphibian look to it, which reinforce the rumours that
    Batman visits Atlantis.

I think it's just one of various suits so I wouldn't be worried.

A cape on an underwater suit tho?

Looks more Elseworlds or Gotham by Gaslight inspired to me.

I have no hope for that. But after that movie, Snyder is done with these movies and that's definitely something to feel hopeful about!

If Snyder doesn't totally destroy the DC cinematic universe with JL he'll be doing well.

IMO, he's pretty much already ruined it tbh. I'm happy enough to let others try drag it back to a somewhat decent place etc. but there's some things he's done that really can't be undone, much to the detriment of the universe.

    First look at Meera:

I would have hoped for a more organic looking amphibious suit but the general reception seems to be positive.

I hope Lex keeps pointing out how Superman is like a god. And maybe starts saying how the rest of the JL are like gods. And how gods are gods and do god things and gods gods gods gods gods gods gods devils gods gods gods.

I get that the Justice League is set to be overloaded with characters from the start, but do we seriously need more than one villain too? One of the biggest problems with BvS and SS was the need to throw as many new characters into the movie as possible. It's like they're going about expanding their universe in the most ham-fisted way possible.

This is an overstated point. Take any movie that's decent, how does it establish so many characters? If the story is good enough.

That's why the dark knight trilogy was so successful and spiderman 3 was sh1t.

I'm not sure it's a point that really can be overstated, in BvS or their plans for the universe in general. If we take BvS as an example...

The characters we'd been introduced to already were:

    Clark Kent/Superman
    Lois Lane
    Perry White
    Martha Kent

The characters that we were then introduced to were:

    Bruce Wayne/Batman
    Alfred Pennyworth
    Dina Prince/Wonder Woman
    Lex Luthor
    KGBeast
    Doomsday
    Senator Finch
    Barry Allen/The Flash
    Victor Stone/Cyborg
    Arthur Curry/Aquaman

I'd argue that, from the above newcomers, the ones to get a decent intro (by which I mean, we're given reasonable insight into their motivations, and those motivations make sense) were, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Sen Finch and maybe Doomsday.

So the new cast outnumber the returning cast by 2.5:1 and most of them are incidental/ill-explored; really just there to set up future interactions/films. I actually have no problem with that, as long as it's done well tbh. I actually think it'd be a really good formula but they've really made a balls of it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,115 ✭✭✭✭Nervous Wreck

Incidentally, from an extended universe point of view, they're also overcrowding it. I hate to just compare them to Marvel but it's kind of hard not to. So here it is...

    Marvel's Method:

    - Five movies to set up the 5 main Avengers (with a brief Hawkeye intro in Thor)
    - Avengers movie with returning villain (Loki) and his (newcomer) army (Chitauri), introduction of a future villain (Thanos), introduction of Maria Hill
    - After this, a few sequels with some set-up movies for new characters, punctuated with team-ups for the OG and the newbs

    DC's Method

    Superman
Batman v Superman (as above post)
Suicide Squad (overpacked cast where no one really gets a satisfying story, save probably Deadshot)
Wonder Woman (already introduced so this is actually a good call)
Justice League (with only half the team having been properly introduced at this point, I think it's too soon)

Then further on down, you've got...

    The Flash
    Aquaman
Cyborg (who really wants a Cyborg movie...?)
    Shazam
    Green Lantern Corps
    Justice League 2
    Suicide Squad 2
    Deadshot
    The Batman
    Man of Steel 2
    Gotham City Sirens
    Justice League Dark

For these future movies it just feels directionless. Like they've got an idea for how they could do these movies but haven't really considered whether or not they *should*. So they're just coming up with announcements and going at it... it really feels like some of these will be cancelled before going into production...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,279 ✭✭✭techdiver

It's a symptom of WB ****ting the bed. All the individual movies should have come first. They were so preoccupied with being "behind" Marvel that they have made a balls of the flow to the DCCU.

People blame Snyder and whilst he is an acquired taste as a director, I would bet any money that it was not his call to over stuff BvS and rush the Justice League. We must remember that the original plan was to have a MOS 2, but the idiot execs had to butt in.

"Unite the League" is such an awful tagline.

That being said, Aquaman's teaser is awesome. Even with the first trailer it's clear they're putting a good deal of focus on getting him right and making him pure badass, and it seems to be working.

Whatever happened to the Unite the Seven tagline... Will The Green Lantern appear in the Movie, probably..

As for Aquaman appearing badass, agreed, its mamoa, he couldn´nt look anything less..

I always thought the "Unite The Seven" tagline was more of a direct reference to Aquaman and his own film, as in "Unite The Seven Seas".

Would have much preferred if they went with something like "Justice is Coming". "Unite The League" just doesn't sound right and is just a poor knock-off version of "Avengers Assemble"

It's all a matter of taste but I find "Justice is Coming" to be even more cringe than "Unite the League". It sounds like the tagline for one of those Judge Judy knock offs... or some sort of porn parody.

Dawn of Justice was quite a nice tagline for BvS... they could have played on that with the next tagline.

Dawn of Justice was part of the title, not a tagine. As part of the title, it was awful. As a tagine, it would have been fine.
