How do I hang a 7kg frame to a plaster wall?

new to the DIY side of things

I want to hang a large picture frame to a wall... there would be a breeze perhaps as the kids leaving the front door unlocked so want it to be secure ..but hastle free...

Plaster is only the finish, do you mean plaster board?

If its plaster board on stud work, screw multiple fixings into more than one stud.

If its plaster board on block, drill into the block and use long fixings.

For that weight I would use multiple fixings anyway.

yes its just a hollow plaster wall .. can hear the neighbours make tea :rolleyes:

Two or 3 nails would be advicible with that size of weight, if the wall is that thin you should wait until you know the neighbors are out before hammering them in, can also buy sticky nails but to be honest they are worse then useless,

Nail in a plasterboard?

Ummm there must be brick between you and your neighbours house, it might not seem like it at times. Is there a socket / switch you can remove on that wall to check what's there?

Oh jesus don't put up loads of nails.

You have to get metal RAWLplugs with hooks or loops on the end to attach whatever hanging apparatus you're using. The heavy weight ones that you put into the wall and they open out behind the plaster board so the fixtures don't just slide out.

You can also put two fixtures either side of the frame so it is flat against the wall and cannot be knocked down but these metal fixtures either side of the picture are visible, not sure of the name but they are a but you're beginning to get into more specialized stuff and they don't even sell what would be most appropriate for hanging pictures and not just rawlplugs from the DIY store in Ireland.

these clips but instead of the plastic bits you use the metal heavy weight RAWLPLUG screws

(I had to use the metal plugs for 7kg curtain poles and also install in galleries and I know for sure with that weight and plasterboard you need something decent).

Nails in a plasterboard to hold heavy weight???

You have to be taking the pi55 here.:eek:


Therer are "specific" plasterboard fixtures,worms and rawl plugs that will take up to 20kg in weight with no problems.

You dont use a nail in a plasterbaord wall to hang heavy items.

I have used these. Regularly, with no issues whatsoever.
For 7kg, they are ideal - I have a dartboard held up with 2 of them, for example.
