Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Non Sporting Fans Reaction To Katie Taylor

I have never been a follower of sports, and what I know about sports couldn't fill the back of a stamp. The only exception is if Ireland qualifies for either the Euros or the World Cup finals (even the qualifiers don't appeal to me).

But watching Katie Taylor's fight today was not only the most emotional reaction I've had to a sporting event, it was the only emotion reaction I ever had.

Unlike the first two fights, the final was very close and my heart was absolutely pumping like a steam engine. It has been a long time since I've been that nervous.

After the sheer relieve and joy on her face when she was declared the winner, I really was fighting back tears of joy. What really did it for me was when she started jumping for joy in the ring - that is the most lovely moments I've ever seen and really very heartwarming. A fantasic reward after 15 years of hard work and dedication to her sport. Her constant smiling on the medal podium and her lap of honor were also tear-jerking moments. This one girl has raised the spirits of a whole nation which badly needs something to cheer about.

So, are they any other people like me who usually has no interest in sports whatsoever, but have been moved by Katie Taylor's fantastic achievement.

Yep. I've never been one for sports. Actually, I hate sports. But I've really enjoyed this Olympics.

I'm not usually one for sports either OP, but the spectacle of 10,000 of the world's greatest superhumans competing for glory is getting to a lot of people. Its wonderful TV. And we Irish deserve to give ourselves credit for putting our weight as a nation behind our contingent, even if many (including me) are bandwagon-jumpers. "No Irish athlete walks alone".

As someone with no interest in any sports I've found the whole out pouring of emotion over Taylor's win a little odd. People who have no interest in the sport are suddenly crying at her win and posting crap like "our katie did us proud" or "on facebook.

I really hate when people will suddenly show an interest in a sport once a sportsperson/team is doing well. It's like when the Irish cricket team were doing well a few years back and suddenly everyone and their mother was a rabid fan who would spout crap about the game of cricket. As my brother who has been boxing for nearly a decade and has numerous wins said earlier today, suddenly everyone is an expert in boxing and telling him how they recognize the technique and style that Katie uses.

Fair play to the girl for winning and good luck to the the Irish lad but really I couldn't care less if they had both lost. And that's not me being a begrudger, I just have no interest in it.

If she had the baby today it would be considered. But not due till April. Would he get bullied in school if he was called Usain?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,507 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

I tend to over-romanticize sporting events since I am literally a sportaholic, but I haven't shown this much emotion to a sporting result since my club won the county title in 2010 after a 29 year wait.

Sport >all other forms of entertainment. By far.

Wouldn't matter. He would be too fast for the bullies.

Its quite simple really. We are a small country in poor shape and we get a lift from these sorts of successes on the world stage. We occasionally need a hero (if thats not too strong a word) to boost our collective self-esteem. Its not inherently a sports thing.

It's not really the sporting aspect that appealed to me, it was seeing her reaction to achieving her dream after 15 years of hard work and dedication to what she loves doing. If I'd seen the same reaction from someone else in the same situation but in a non-sport competition, I probably would have had the same emotional response. Also, her father being there also added extra emotion.

It's not a recent thing, Irish nonsports fan suddenly falling in love with a sport once the team/sports-person stars winning is as old as the hills. If tomorrow the Irish curling team made it to the finals in some competition then people would suddenly be fans of the sport. You see it every year when local GAA teams have near empty stadiums throughout the season but if they make it to the final then everyone is fighting for a ticket and telling the world what a fan they are.

Human beings have nothing at all to boast about in the World Arena of Psychical power .The average Domestic Cat or Dog can outrun the best of them If they timed everyone in Miles Per Hour including all Animals.. the slowness of a Human would be embarrassing ...so they don't .
Boxing; The average Kangaroo would quite easily kill A male Heavyweight .

I watched it and enjoyed some of it, but it takes all the meaning out of the tradition of the sport imo. It's always been about raw violence, not points. This version of the (male and female) sport is like putting a Yaris engine into a Ferrari and tootling gently around the Monaco circuit. It's soulless, imo.

Am I the only one that wouldn't open the window if Katie Taylor was boxing in my back garden?

Earlier, I heard the Irish shouting like a bunch of eejits on TV so I turned up the volume on my earphones....

I don't get this country vs. country stuff. An individual fought a boxing match, Katie Taylor, the athlete won a medal...not Ireland.

Really made my day:) I was just so happy when she won, I loved the atmosphere about the whole country today, just walking around in town (dublin) today whenever you heard anyone elses conversations they were all talking about katie taylor..just really made me feel good..I dunno I just feel that we're such a small country but so united :) Made me really proud of our country and katie today. The fight was also excellent ,so tense and exciting!

Did you have a boxing match today?

The people you heard talking about Katie Taylor didn't lift a finger today. Why should Katie Taylor share it with you? She won it on merit. It was a great accomplishment from one individual and she's to be complimented - but not anybody else, certainly not 4 million people for doing absolutely nothing.

You or the people you overheard today, won nothing. I can't understand why people would think they get a hand on the medal because one stranger just so happens to be born over the other side of the island you happened to live on. Once you get past the blind patriotism, you discover it's really just mindless drivel.
