Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

21 minutes gone, Ad break 2.

I'm guessing C4 are trying to get them all out of the way before the opening ceremony starts.

It's already infinitely more sophisticated than the Olympic opening ceremony

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

Does anyone remember what the show was a few months back , think it was a panel show (maybe QI?), possibly with Jimmy Carr either asking or being asked did he know what Paralympics stood for and he says "paraple-" then stops. Hilarity ensued. :)

I said during the opening and closing ceremonys the lighting is absolutely amazing.

I am wondering is each panel wired to a central processor, it must have cost a fortune.

Theres a candle in each one and the people in the seats have different colour crepe paper to hold up when they are told to.

Cheers for the offer, but I've never been a big fan of AD. Never mind, he shut up a bit for a while there.

I'm not honestly smitten with this yet as I was with the Olympic opening ceremony but will give it time.

    Harrys grounded!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,432 ✭✭✭df1985

was the "for those that can" comment really necessary before the anthem??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭Colmustard

Now due respects to the British, the home of beatles bowie handel worthsworth shakespeare and on and on but Gawd could they do something about their anthem.

It is such an awful tune and the lyrics are worse. I am not saying ours is much better.

I always prefered 'Jerusalem', at least as the Anthem of England.

It strikes me that between them Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry may have invented a new sort of the open air "in the round" theatre for the stadium age. Maybe they should keep it for more of this sort of thing rather than Leyton Orient or West Ham!

Now that is a good idea. I would like that to be ours if they don't take it.

An Irish Anthem with the word England in. That will go down well.

    :D

The opening ceremony for this was quite good.
These countries going in is going to take a while again.

Could be a reference to Shakesperes open air theatre, the globe.

Just scribble that bit out and write Ireland above. Simples.

Will Sir Ian, the Hawkmeister and Miranda be making a return after the parade? Otherwise that was a very short artistic section...

EDIT: Ok, so according to the outline here >http://www.itv.com/news/update/2012-08-29/order-of-events-at-tonights-opening-ceremony/, there's a lot more to come.

There's a country called Benin where is that?
I learn something new at all the olympics.

We are 24th of the 165 participating countries in terms of our number of athletes....49 Irish paralympians according to wikipedia. Punching above our weight already!

Thats only, what? , 17 less than we managed to get to the normal Olympics . And with a lot less events.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

They touched on it there a few minutes ago but does anyone know what the story is with the grading etc?

Say with the likes of Pistoreous running against a single amputee . Who has the advantage, all things being equal bar one havign one leg and the other havign none.

True. I see we have more athletes than the likes of Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Belgium here. Good to see a healthy ratio like that, win or not.

Think its more too do with how much of an impact the disabilty has on your ability. C4 used a diagram of it in relation to the swimming earlier on today.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paralympic_Games#Classification

Depends on the sport and how that effects the ability.

Approximately T= athletics track, F=atheltics field, S= swimming, SB=swimming breaststroke, and a million and 1 other codes.

I believe the team sports have a ranking for each disability and the total ability score per athlete, so if substituting during the game the ability score cannot go over a certain threshold for the whole team at any point.

I take what I said about the audio description people back. Listening to their relevant fact laden and only vaguely descriptive commentary is a Godsend after listening to Snow wittering on about the civil war of each country.
