    In general (as a non Irish person) I do notice that Irish people seem to place an awful lot of importance in perceived bells and whistles (fancy sounding toppings, amount of sauce, portion size, gimmick etc etc) Bunsen Burger is a place that does one thing and one thing well- there is a tradition of that in America but I don;t think it plays particularly well here.

    That is a really really good point and one that I hadnt thought of in the context of Irish restaurants.

    I was in a pub the other day and there were about two hundred things on the menu.....you could get a chicken burger or a chicken tagliatelle or chicken curry or a chicken stirfry, there was no rhyme or reason to it. But you knew without ordering that it was all mediocre at best, despite the prices.

    In contrast there is a small cafe I go to in Stoneybatter (Java Bay) that does the very best muffins I have had in Dublin, they sell heaps of them, they make them in-house, they are constantly coming out of the oven, if they are not warm they are definitely fresh, they are served with fresh cream. Simple and delicious. I go there all the time because I know what they do and I know its really good.

    Not eaten in most of these places. But have found Bobo's to be consistently mediocre. Their chips are awful rubbish.

    Agreed, went tonight and burger was barely passable. Couldn't eat the sides. Youd honestly be better off with a 2 euro double cheese

    Marty- not trying to be a dickhead but upthread you are raving about "burgers in a bowl" not sure I'd trust your opinion on a good,classic hamburger. :D

    Agreed on the two bbq places both pretty average.

    :pac: well played, although I do just like the burger in a bowl because it cuts out the simple carbs :o but agreed a proper burger should be in a bun :).


    Sadly they are average for me Aussie BBQ whilst not amazing food like the other two the food is nicer and much better value.

    oz bbq last night, had the 1/2 lb with the pulled pork and bacon sizable burger and their fries are nice too im a fan.

    I find that if you add salt to the burger in Bunsen the whole experience is very different. I must say I find it frustrating that they spent a long time working on meat ratios and bun recipes but neglect to season the end product correctly.

    I was in Bunsen today and I have to say I was very disappointed. With the hype on here I was looking forward to a flavoursome delicious burger but I just didn't see anything amazing about it. There was little flavour and I can't help but feel the bun was overpowering the meat.

    I have no allegiance to any one place. If somewhere does an amazing burger then that's where I'll go. For me BoBo's was the place to go and I had hoped I was going to find a better burger in Bunsen but alas that wasn't the case.

    I'll have to try the other places mentioned below. Some I knew about others I didn't:

    Some of those burgers could be nice, but just all the wrong shape. Too thick for the bun. Rustic Stone is the worst offender.
    Although, I like the look of the one from the Morrison Hotel

    Had a Bunsen burger yesterday with the GF both of us didn't see what the fuss was about and left hungry after a double burger and chips
    It tasted like a pumped up version of a mcdonalds double cheese burger, it was just one big sloppy mess of a thing,
    the chips weren't the best either
    I had the hand cut chips, they were very very small like the end of a bag of chips from the chipper
    Don't think I'd be back in a hurry

    They are good but need to sort out their seating. Once when i was leaving i had to ask 4 people to get up off the bench and move around the place as i crept out. Even when sitting it was ver claustrophobic

    I finally got to experience the Counter on Suffolk St over the weekend and it didn't disappoint me or the OH. We went in with a serious hunger and ordered wings between us to start. Never mind the burger, the wings were the best I've had 'out' in a long time. There was no shortage of meat on them and there was half an inch of hot sauce in the bottom of the bowl, them alone will take me back to the Counter again soon.

    As for the burger, I went with the smallest beef patty at 1/3 lbs for 9.95 which was no small patty. For that price I also got bun, 1 sauce plus 4 regular toppings. For an extra euro I went with monterray cheddar, and 'specialised' toppings were available at 50c each, of which I went for 2 (grilled bacon, shoe-string onion rings). Basically it was a pimped up bacon and cheese burger, but done better than I've tasted in other similar joints in town. The burger definitely was almost well done but still juicy. The sweet potato fries to share that accompanied it were almost too much, but they were too nice not to finish. Neither of us were a fan of the dijon mustard mayonnaise with the fries but there were no shortage of sauces at the table to dip.

    Overall a great experience, nice decor and bar, drinks selection, friendly and fast service, the music was notably decent too. The price was €40 and that included some drinks too. Only there's still some other places I want to check out I'd be rushing back there, but Jo Burger and Bunsen still remain uncharted territory for me.

    One thing though about all the burger joints I've been to around here, and it includes Counter, Eddies, Bobos, GBK, I find the burger itself could always do with more seasoning and it's the toppings that have to be relied upon to deliver the depth of flavour. Looking forward to trying Bunsen to see if theirs is any different.

    Bunsen is the only place that cook burgers to your liking as far as I know. Unfortunately, apart from that the burger seriously lacks seasoning, the toppings are dominated by the pickle and the 'baked in-house' bun is poor at best. Granted, burger buns are tricky to get right.
    I've never had a great burger in Dublin but a couple that stand out from the crowd are cafe novo at the westbury and bobo's. Like everywhere else they cook them into hockey pucks but they do retain decent flavour, the toppings are great and the fries in bobo's are particularly good.

    agree that bunsen is over-rated and wayyyy overpriced but damn dat mince is worth it alone.

    as shown in the video, they steam the bun for flavour but i think it just makes it soggy.

    bobo's is a regular spot for me as well, you can get some real value depending on the time of day.

    i think mcdonalds double cheese is daycent for the price as well though, i probably have 3 a week :-o

    Had the veggie burger in The Counter today and it was meh. Greasy stodge, Rip-off at a tenner. My lunch pal had the proper meaty Counter burger and it was was pretty good, good beef and good value as the lunch special with chips and a drink for a tenner (-5c :rolleyes:) Those greasy shoestring onions I could do without though.

    I agree McDonalds burgers are massively underrated. Way better than the majority of overpriced hockey pucks loaded with out of season ingredients served up as excuses for burgers in this city.

    Have been reading a few of these threads. Spent the past week in Dublin and tried a few of the burger joints mentioned in this thread.

    Must say that I was completely underwhelmed by Bobos burger and by Bunsen burger. The quality of the burgers was similar to that you'd find anywhere at 3am in the morning and definitely not in the "gourmet" category. Bobos in particular went to town on having a fancy bun with doughy bread but the meat was a complete let down.

    Hipsters are loaded sure.

    There burgers aint the worst but not worth the price.

    Theres to much bloody poncing around in alot of these new hip burger joints give me a nice big juicy burger with decent quality meat and one or two simple fresh toppings any day.

    McDonald's big Mac from grafton street during the afternoon is pretty good. It's just been made. It's nicer than most burger places
