Home built NAS can't be seen on Home Network

Mods, please move this thread if this isn't the correct forum.

I was given an old PC with a P4 cpu and no HDDs. I thought that I'd have a go at building a NAS. I installed an old HDD and downloaded and installed Nas4free version 9. AFAIK the NAS is configured correctly and I can see the NAS front end GUI and can access it over the home network via the Firefox browser.
My problem is that I can't see the NAS on my network. I can see the two other PCs and the WDTV Live on the network. I've Googled with no success.
I'm stuck and would appreciate any help or advise.

    Thanks in advance.

Older PCs like that can be fairly power hungry and a NAS is something that you tend to keep on for very long periods, so it's not a great idea.

A guess about your problem - bad IP address or subnet?

Thanks for the reply. I can see the NAS by typing the IP address of the NAS into the browser on my my PC, http://192. etc. What's a subnet? About the power usage, I'm just build the NAS as an experiment to see what's involved so I can either build one or buy one.

Have you tried mapping network drives instead? Sometimes that can still work even if you can't see the computer itself in the NSC.

You need to configure and start the CIFS/SMB service before it will appear in the network map.

NAS4Free is just a further developed version of FreeNAS 7 before they started work on FreeNAS 8. As I understand it, some of the developers of FreeNAS had a bit of a falling out, possibly due to the involvement of ixSystems, and also that FreeNAS 8 took rather longer than expected to reach the same level of stability as version 7, hence the 'split'.

Anyway, whichever the OP chooses to install, he'll have to do exactly the same, i.e. configure and start CIFS, before he'll see it appearing in his Windows network :D

Open up an explorer window (windows key + E) and type "//192.168.1.xxx" into the address bar, does that do anything?

    Hello All.
Sorry about the delay in replying, unexpected visitors dropped in for a chat last night and stayed 'til way past bedtime.
Anyway, tonight I couldn't http to the machine no matter what address that I tried so I reloaded the whole OS and reconfigured the system again. Would you believe that now I can't see the second disc that is supposed to hold the data.
I've googled for an answer for about 90 mins with no success and I'm cross eyed now.
Enough for tonight, I'm off for a cuppa and bed........

I had another go at mounting the disc last night. I kept getting 'Error - Retry' which I did (retry) to no avail. I googled the error and followed the installation notes, still to no avail.
I'm completed lost now. Can anyone shed any light on what I'm doing wrong or should be doing?

    Regards.
