Architect or Structural Engineer?

    Hi,

Here's the problem. We have a house that has a flat roof over the kitchen/utility and beyond that a conservatory with a glass roof. We have two problems. There's a leak in the utility roof. Not a bad leak - just water marks on the wall. The second problem is the conservatory - because of the glass roof it's very cold in winter and causes the kichen in turn to be very cold as it's open plan between the two.

Our neighbour a few doors down seems to have but a pitched roof over their kitchen. I would like to know if it's possible to do the same for us and also if it's possible to run the roof right over the existing conservatory. The hope is that the area would be warmer with better insulation in the pitched roof throughout.

Who should we approach about this - an architect or a structural surveyor/engineer?

    Thanks,

Not biased towards one or other but the architect should give you 'bigger picture' understanding for where the problem lies, and how to appropriately solve it.
The building surveyor may tell you where the problem is.
The engineer (structural) how to build a solution.

Straight off the two zones environmentally are working against each other, and without seeing it, instinctively I would suggest that the that should be separated so the conservatory works as a sun room and useful only during the day and when heated by the sun.

I would recommend getting an architect or an architectural technician/technologist or building surveyor to inspect it first and then prepare a set of drawings and schedule of works, as they would be best positioned to advise on all aspects of the works and relevant regulations. It may not be necessary to get a structural engineer involved.
