my dell inspiron laptop screen keeps going off on its own, if you shine a light on the screen you can see everything.
I've rang a few places but their mainly only doing virus work etc, one guy did take it form me, replaced a cable from motherboard to screen and it worked for 3 days, then same story off again he looked at it again, couldnt find a fault, but it worked again for a day, then off again, he had his collegue look at it and couldnt find a problem either. in fairness he gave a full refund straight up no fix no fee company but does anyone know someone that may specialise in the actual physical repair of laptops?
If you start it up it works fine for five minutes, starts flickering for ten seconds and then off fully

    Sounds like the inverter.

There's loads of places that do laptop repairs, one on Davis St. and Thomas St. off the top of my head.

It sounds like the guy replaced the inverter cable, but it could just as likely be that if as you say the laptop was working fine after he replaced the cable, then the replacement cable could've been faulty too (happens more often than you might think!).

From your description of the problem, I would also have replaced the backlight, and tried that, though most places now seem to favour changing out the whole LCD and charging anywhere between €120 and €150 to do it.

Where did you get that service? No fix no fee sounds good!

There is a guy just off Roches Street - I got an phone unlocked that I couldn't do online and a laptop looked at (didn't charge for looking at that, as the parts would've been too expensive).

    Might be worth a go!

took it to place on davis st, they had it apart, rang to say it was fixed they had changed the inverter. I took it home and that evening off again. Took it back again they had it for 9!! days collected it today. they said there was a problem with the screen it kept burning out the inverters so the replaced the lcd. told me any more problems and they'd put my origional inverter and lcd back in and give a refund. This evening its gone again.

Im at a loss with what to do with it now...should i just throw it in the shannon and be rid of it.

Jesus! And to be honest, the guys on Davis Street would have done their utmost to see you right, and they know their stuff. It sounds to me like the only thing left is the connection on the motherboard itself must be overheating somehow and shorting out the power to the inverter and LCD (they both draw power from the same one cable going from the motherboard to the LCD).

I'd suggest you put that refund towards the cost of a new laptop as the cost of a new motherboard could set you back about €250-€300. Not worth it IMHO.

Honestly thomand if it was MY laptop and everything else was working, I'd buy a wireless keyboard and mouse and slot the laptop under my TV to use as a media center for my movies, music, the odd bit of web browsing, etc (most modern TV's have a VGA connector to use your TV as a monitor for your laptop.

But if you wanted to actually sell it and put the money towards a new laptop, I'd suggest your best bet would be to put it on adverts.ie as a whole, because otherwise all that's really salvageable or sellable is the RAM and the hard drive, and you wouldn't get a whole pile for them if I'm guessing that its only two 2GB sticks of RAM and a 320GB hard drive.
