Twitter is all abuzz about this story which comes from the latest wikileaks leak from emails within the private security company Stratfor. Apparently trapwire is a security system which takes images from security cameras, it then uses software such as face recognition and behavior analysis to try to identify potential terrorists/criminals. The system is in operation in the US but also rumored to be being used in Australia.

Wikileaks has been under a massive DOS attack since the story broke and the alleged hacker has been arrested and charged.

The story is only on blogs and online pretty much so far though the Guardian and New York Times have done stories on it.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/13/trapwire-surveillance-system-exposed-leak

The NYT is saying the scope of the system is exaggerated but confirms it exits.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/14/us/trapwire-antiterrorist-software-leaks-set-off-web-furor.html

Maybe others have more information about it.

I'm not sure what to make of it yet haven't found out enough about it but seems like a very sinister development. The opportunities for misuse of such a system are immense and is this something we want in a "free" society?

    What ye think?

If it's true it's the definition of Orwellian. The big difference though is there's actually vocal opposition. I think Gary Johnson said something about dismantling the surveillance state when he was governor in New Mexico in an interview, and I hope that other governors are taking action about the surveillance state too.

    Eye of God
    ha ha hahaha awww seriously
no seriously this sh1t is mental..... has anyone actually watched the crappy but addictive series 'Person of Interest' ? the entire basis of the program is this exact thing... word for word...no messing detail for detail - recording everyone everywhere and storing the data and analyzing it trying to predict bad things happening..

fair to say the writers knew about TrapWire before RT did i.e. at least 2 years ago but that's just my own little CT I just made up

apart from that... TrapWire is a conspiracy theorists dream. Can you imagine the different types of data that could be theoretically gleamed from the amalgamation of super high tech cameras, mics, phone bugs, roving bugs, phone intercepts, email intercepts, travel data, flight data, traffic data, number plate data, credit card data, texts, biometric data, internet search data all into one giant evil 'Eagle Eye' type mainframe that has an evil voice and a big glowing red eye I jest but seriously it's mad sh1t. Add that to this and then move to a cave off-grid and sit in a corner in a paranoid coma :)

    and then this

10 years ago Conspiracy heads were talking about this stuff without proof saying it was all out there... but now it seems... well.. it is.. end of story.

    TrapWire®

TrapWire is a unique, predictive software system designed to detect patterns indicative of terrorist attacks or criminal operations. Utilizing a proprietary, rules-based engine, TrapWire detects, analyzes and alerts on suspicious events as they are collected over periods of time and across multiple locations. Through the systematic capture of these pre-attack indicators, terrorist or criminal surveillance and pre-attack planning operations can be identified -- and appropriate law enforcement counter measures employed ahead of the attack. As such, our clients are provided with the ability to prevent the terrorist or criminal event, rather than simply mitigate damage or loss of life.

The TrapWire system includes a variety of features and components that are configured and delivered based on the specific needs of the customer organization and its end users. There are currently three different TrapWire systems available for public and private sector clients:

TW-CI (TrapWire Critical Infrastructure) focuses on the identification of pre-operational surveillance activities occurring around specific sites within the TrapWire Network
TW-CM (TrapWire Community Member) supports the online reporting of suspicious behavior by community members, such as the iWatch programs in Los Angeles and Washington DC, and See Something Say Something in Las Vegas and New York
TW-LE (TrapWire Law Enforcement) provides the ability to gather, analyze and disseminate information about surveillance and logistical activities occurring across an entire geographic region, including information gathered via TW CI and TW CM deployments

    - direct from their site

hmm not so secret.. well still.. there's plenty of sexy conspiracy angles

It's the usual internet hysteria and hype. It's just a programme to facilitate quicker sharing of information between the myriad of agencies in the US (which was abysmal on 911). It's generally been set-up by ex-int agency types, and it seems they are in it for profit.

So it's less "ZOMG the gubermint is tracking me" and more "another token overly expensive government security service".

I can't find a decent link but these break it down without all the hype

There's no facial recognition, basically its just a neighbourhood watch for the whole of the US, good? bad? who knows, but it isn't some giant secret conspiracy.

Pubs in the UK can buy facial recognition software which they use through their security camera's not a conspiracy. Not convinced by your two blogs tbh

Trapwire does not use facial recognition software. The patent is available, info has been available since 2006. Not as exciting as people want it to be, but there you go.
