If you go to Green Man Gaming you can buy the Slingshot DLC at a 25% discount with this code: GMG25-CZPYL-D5MQ6

    It works out at €4.87

I bought the DLC with a 35% discount I done by doing one of their surveys and traded in a game I had gotten from them (for free) so I got the DLC for total of €3.70 :)

Ah sorry I didn't know that the Slingshot DLC was up on GMG until yesterday. Don't always usualy go there to buy stuff but they always seem to give out coupons to use so might be a site to visit regularly

Need a bit of help. New to XCOM and started my first playthrough on normal. I built a satellite uplink facility early but hadn't realised it takes 20 days to build a satellite...doh.

So my panic levels are high and the alien base mission is waiting so I thought I'd try it cause I read somewhere it lowers panic levels globally.
Up until then I hadn't reloaded and some missions I lost no troops, some I lost 1 but no more than that.

So yeah, I got annihilated in the base. So I reloaded and tried it again, keeping squad close together, advancing slowly and all that, got near the end I think but then it fell apart again. Chrysalid kills squad member who then comes back to life and kills another squad member. Also, assault squad member ran out of ammo for shotgun and it wouldn't let me reload??

So I'm wondering if I've done it all wrong. I have a couple of sets of carapace armour and laser rifles but should I be kitted out better at this stage?
I spend a lot of resources building facilities. (I have all officer training upgrades as far as the 6th squad member.)

It's near the end of the month and I'm out of cash so I could just move on time to get the monthly cash and hope I don't get an abduction mission? (if there's a further increase in panic levels I'll likely lose a country)

Or is it doable with the level of my squad if I persist? I was bringing 2 sniper, 2 assault, 1 heavy and 1 support. I would have brought more heavies and think they'd help against the chrysalids (shredder rocket) but didn't want to mess up the place too bad...

Do you have a sniper with the Squad-Sight skill? I'd only bring one, and make sure they have that. Replace the second one with another Heavy. Don't worry about damaging the scenery, winning the mission always takes precedence.

Be cautious about how you move the squad. Always make sure you have 3-4 ready to shoot at any threat that suddenly appears. This means you will only ever move 1-2 soldiers in a turn, and maybe have 1 other reload. Use one of the assault guys to make 1 move forward for a recon, once your sniper is in a good position. If they spot something, let the sniper take a shot, then pull the recon guy back with his/her second move. The heavies should then be available on overwatch to pound any attackers that try to follow. And in the next turn they can rocket the Chrysalids. I'd save the rockets for Chrysalids which are probably the biggest threat.

Unfortunately not. I chose the other skill for that sniper and my only other one is a squaddie. Will replace him with the heavy. Might swap an assault for another support too and give them a laser rifle, seems to do more damage than the shotgun.

Will make sure to retreat and keep the recon guy covered too and see how it goes. Those feckin Chrysalids are hard to keep away from your squad though, especially the bit where 4 of them come together.

try to level up another sniper to get squad sight. it's so unbelievably useful.

I may have to try but that'll mean moving on time and if I get another abduction mission I could well lose some countries.

Bit of a spike in difficulty compared to the previous missions - think the worst I've faced before this is 2 Chrysalids...but then again it is the alien base.

Went for the restart on Ironman. Will be building satellites early this time. Had been playing self-imposed ironman anyway really and feels wrong to keep restarting the mission.

Loving this game more since I restarted. I thought it'd be boring playing the same missions again but the map layouts are different! Random generation? Really happy with that. Will definitely be giving classic a shot after/if I get through this.

Always build an uplink and order your satelites at the beginning of each month...

You can then release them to the countries with the highest panic levels at the end of the month before the council meeting so that they dont leave the project.

i always leave the uplinks until midway through the month they only take 14 days to build and worst comes to worst (worse comes to worse?) you can sell off some artifacts if you dont have the cash

I think it's "worse comes to worst".

I have no doubt, however, one flaw from the game I just completed was the ability to reload (or my lack of inability to resist) when something didn't work out.

I look forward to, and embrace the inevitable carnage...

    you say that now...... :)

ironman is definitely the way to play it, whatever difficulty you're on but ironman is just.. ridiculous. haven't got further than 3 months, maybe 4 months once. kinda given up on it now but I'll come back to it in a few months

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭penev10

What difficulty do you recommend playing this on? I have it coming to me this Xmas for the PS3 and am planning to pour some hours into it.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

    normal ironman

    --edit

maybe play a couiple of months of normal non ironman first to get a feel for the game and the controls, then restart a normal ironman playthrough

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

    yeah, as SDCC says above...

comparing normal to classic is like comparing a walk in the park to THE ****ING ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

You *will* go insane if you go from normal normal to ironman classic. Its for masochists only.

got my irish colonel sniper and heavy killed today on normal ironman. Was a relatively easy mission too.

Shot down a UFO and killed what i thought was everything but one last normal Muton. Sent the sniper in as an airbourne scout to root out the last one. Found him and rallied the heavies and assaults up to support the sniper. They were all behind cover and the sniper had the half-cover bonus in flight.

enemy activity - the Muton scarpers into the fog of war.

My turn again, set the sniper on overwatch. moved my heavies forward a bit with the assaults taking point. Found the Muton, and three Muton Elites.. at this point i actually said Awhh bawlox! The elites took down my sniper like they were swatting a fly, and i lost a heavy trying to kill the rest of them... couldnt play anymore after that mission. :D

    Still love it :)

The main reason I'll never play Ironman is that the game isn't polished enough for me to not want to throw the PC out the window when something horrible happens. Like the interface goes weird and I misclick, sending a guy to certain death, or bad guys spawn in ridiculous places. I feel entirely comfortable reloading in circumstances like that and Ironman would make that impossible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,743 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

that's not nearly as bad as it used to be, though firaxis have promised a patch to eliminate it completely. The spawning on top of you thing that is..

The multi level ships are still a problem. Sometimes if you want to send a guy to an upper floor you have to scroll up to a point where the ship roof reappears and you can't see where you're sending him.

    arrrrghghghhghghghrhrhrgs;rhjgrohgsbhjsa

So I started an ironman classic last night, and got a fair bit in. Got a generator, lab, workshop, and uplink built. Started a mission, and figured it was bed time. Selected save & exit. Game saved, but didn't exit. Rinse and repeat. So I figure, sure it's saved at least, so I abort the mission.
    Mission failed.
    4 top men KIA.
    3 countries leave the project.

Fair enough, don't care (cause I saved), I'll just shut down.
Only option let on "esc" -> "save and exit". Where's close with no save?? ARRgrggghghghgh

that happened to me a couple of times too
I just went to task manager and killed the process, it loaded up at the start of the move anyway as it's ironman and had already saved

if ye Q or E to rotate the camera, that works too. I've forgiven that one an awful lot as it was a tonne worse than it is now when the game was released. They patched in a fix for it, it's not entirely gone but i can live with it. The spawning on top of you thing is probably the worst thing left they've to completely fix

ah, I didn't have the same problem where it screwed me save wise on the reload as when I noticed the game wasn't saving properly I just killed the process, hoping the ironman mode would save me.

You used a high value soldier, who specialises in long range stand off attacks, and can't carry a decent close range weapon, into a CQB situation as a point man?

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear.
