Nothing yet. I even kept an ear out in the xcom forums and twitter people are saying they don't want to announce anything so close to the showing of The Bureau. Makes sense not to clash in the spotlight. So keep them fingers crossed. In the meantime I'm giving Classic Ironman a go again got the elite soldiers pack to make my troops look better.

I've been itching to go I/I myself again, and actually complete it this time rather than ragequit after all my Irish guys get nailed :D

I haven't even finished Classic yet. Recommend fair and fun Second Wave options?

i tend not to use most of them, the flanking one is good, crits on flanked targets, as is marathon, but that one requires you to be extra resourceful with satellites and weapon/armour research. Basically i tjust means you'll have to sell some alien stuff to get anything done. Balancing act..

I don't pick damage roulette. sucks when your plasma sniper rifle crits for 1 damage on a sectopod, great when your bog standard rifle crits anything! prefer to have solid base damage rather than a gamble

the economy one is awkward sometimes, but doesnt do much other than change the values for each nation in the councel to a random number equaling the same overall amount. like France giving you way more funds than Germany or something like that.

random stats on promotions is just too random for me, but I've only ever used it once or twice and it gave me some super heavies.

edit: forgot to add, that the flanking one is a double edged deal, if your soldiers are exposed they get auto critted by the aliens too

    Firaxis/2K didn't even have a stand. I was a little disappointed.

I had to work around a glitch yesterday - everytime this Berserker kept charging my team, he would break my controls so that only the camera & Home buttons worked anymore! :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 779 ✭✭✭jaxdasher

That hasn't happened to me. All I've had is the teleporting enemies glitch and the battle scanner one which is helpful to me.

Oh and question to all who has done a Marathon game. Does the appearance of stronger enemies delay in it, compared to a non Marathon game?

I've gone back to play Iron Man (Normal, because I'm not a freaking masochist :P ) and its a LOT of fun. Except when they introduced both Mutons AND Cyberdisks in the same level and I disturbed them and a group of Sectopods all at the same time while trying to zap a muton. 2 dead captains which HURT. Still, it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat hahah...

About to assault the base now... I'm not hopeful that many of them are coming back :)

it does and it doesn't.. once you get the relevant research or equivalent in alien bodies/prisoners it will move onto the next tier.

So if you have enough to research the first few sectoid/thinman things like the vest and medkit, floaters will start showing up. Or it seemed like that to me. And research takes ages too..

I just hate chrysilids, lost so many soldiers to them on terror missions :/

    F**k Chryssalids!

What are the best settings to start on for a newbie?

Do I just have to accept some of my dudes are going to die/I will suffer setbacks or what?

Any general tips for a first time player?

  • Registered Users Posts: 779 ✭✭✭jaxdasher

Normal, if brave enough with Ironman mode.

Dudes will die period. Sacrifices in troops, funds and countries are almost necessary.
The start will always be hard you will start to lose rating but don't lose hope and once you prioritize more later on you can get the ratings up in time.

Battle tips. Move slowly don't dash unless necessary. Half cover is almost like no cover so hunker down. Keep hunkering down. If you are sure you haven't triggered the enemy you can go on overwatch since you get a "free turn" when they detect you. Hunker down again. I personally avoid taking shots that are below 60%. Use your abilities when you can, no point hoarding them when you are dead. Remember your snipers have pistols when you can't use their main gun. Hunker down.

That's all I can think of for now. Good Luck Commander.

Go normal to start off with, do everything in the tutorial - dont skip it, it kind of breaks the idea that all your soldiers are superheroes, they arent.. save at the start of each mission in case you want to reload after a nasty surprise.. or for-go that and do normal ironman, it autosaves after every move and you cant reload to get your dead soldiers back :D

Listen to Bradley as much as possible, he gives you a kind of tour of the facilities and tells you what does what. Dont forget about giving satellites to nations that need them, not ones that dont. High panic levels = give satellite.

    Always use cover!
    And good luck commander!

Satellites are vital, they calm the population because you will get three missions and only be able to do one... the other two get raised panic, so you will gather panic as you go along. The key point is that it takes 20 days to get them so you basically have to always have at least one spare if you can manage it (which you wont, you will need them all!).

Balance your Engineers, your scientists, your solider kit and your interceptor abilities as best you can (the latter can be left for a few months but if left longer the aliens will start to run off with your precious satellites!).

Countries WILL leave XCOM, that's pretty much assured so don't panic if they do BUT if they do, you cant get the continent bonus for Sat coverage. So, bear that in mind when letting some countries swing in the wind :) )

Don't commit too much to Laser tech, move ASAP to Plasma (you get this through autopsies) but DO buy a couple of laser rifles because they bridge a gap.

XCOM management is "squeaky bum" so don't be worried if you are always on the verge of a catastrophe. One thing to know is that the "mid game key point" lowers panic by 2 around the globe. You'll know what I mean when you get there.

Have fun, we've all lost a bunch of squads to this game so don't despair if your first game is a shambles :)

On this point, you have to remember that you get the continent bonus from your starting base regardless of any lost countries.

Also, you can eventually do it in such a way that you don't lose any countries, i haven't been able to do that on any difficulty above normal though.

Just takes some practice, and instead of losing countries you'll probably lose soldiers instead :D

It's a harsh game that makes you plan out losing something.

Nearly finished my first classic run recently. Volunteer died on the final assault :(

Oh god... Decided to play the base mission and it went from bad to worse to omgthisisawful. Firstly as bunch of crysalids jumped my first guy (and the only person with a stunner is turns out) but I survive that. Then a rocket goes off course and toasts him again but he's still ok. I move him one square into full cover and....activate two group of Crysalids, I toast three of them and have one alien on 3 health and a sniper like 5 squares from him and no cover and it gave me a 35% chance to hit (wtf is with that?!). So I miss, it kills my guy with a stunner. Another panics and shoots at a second squaddie but doesnt kill him. I'm like "phew, that would have been awful"... End of turn.... ZOMBIE who *does* kill him. NGGGHGHGH!!

Get to the end with 4 guys, one heavy gets mind controlled, shoots another, enemy comm psychs a second, and the other two panic basically. LOL!

I'm done, I'll come back in a month when I have stopped steaming.

  • Registered Users Posts: 779 ✭✭✭jaxdasher

What's worse is during the escort mission I almost got the guy out but my sniper panics and shoots him in the end. Fun times...

I got this free with Bioshock Infinite so I know I am late to the party. Started playing it the other day while waiting for the last of us to arrive and it's great!

Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe sh*t just hasn't hit the fan yet but I'm doing pretty well so far on my first playthrough. No countries have left yet, and I have a few satellites up and a few squadrons of fighters. The council have rated me at A every month :D.

Most of my originals are still alive. I have lost a few guys though. I lost my South African sniper which was a big shame, but I still have my German sniper who I've had from the start. She's the business. My 'Heavy' guy is called Thunder and the guy is a beast. He has so much health at this stage that I just send him headfirst into combat.

I have an Irish guy in my group and he has the Irish flag on his armour and gun which makes me laugh when he fires them :P.

Can somebody tell me how long the story is? I've been taking my time for sure. I've had that mission where they want you to capture that prothean looking fellow for ages....the ones that just materialise out of thin air but I always forget to stun them and just murder them instead.
