I have now restarted the opening mission 4 times....

    i hate this ****ing game

Wait until you you restart around mission 10 because all you experienced squad get wiped out due to your best sniper missing a 90% shot or your Heavy MG only doing 3 damage - it'll never be your tactics at fault. Ohhhh no...... Always the game's.

Then realise this is the tenth game you've restarted in a week because you refuse to okay non-iron man, all because of an article showing someone you'll never meet playing the perfect game, and you stubbornly believe you can do it too.

I currently have a very busy real life yet I've still clocked 20 hours in this way over last week. That's almost a whole day of mostly needed sleep sacrificed.

Is the frustration aspect high with this one? If so I may avoid.

Not frustration as in bugs and glitches and ai flaws. More frustration in the harder settings of 'why isn't my plan working!!!!'. Add in ironman (as in no saves except for exactly what has just happened) , means that when you f.ck up, you really are f'ed.

Still one of the best games I've ever played

I've heard similar warnings about Dark Souls which I also plan to pick up soon. Time to find myself a happy place!

The number of times I've missed a 95% shot, but then hit something like a 20% one that I did out of desperation. This is why I'd suck at gambling!

thin men need to be removed from this ****ing game

i took out about five of them the first mission you meet an exalt guy and one last one just drops from the sky and one shots everyone on my team, i couldn't touch him

    --edit

    oh, delightful

just after that mission I decided to take the 'easy' abduction mission cos I only had rookies left over

    six ****ing floaters

    Your not paranoid enough. :P

On that escort mission where you wiped i was thinking what's gonna happen here as i get this fella back to the Skyranger. So i had one guy on the ground go to get the guy and i had 3 soldiers on overwatch on top of the buildings waiting for them to attack.

Always presume the game is gonna try fk ya over and never use both moves of a soldier each turn unless your sure it's clear. It help's not to hit overwatch until your last guy has moved too in case he encounters a pod of enemies who might suddenly outflank you. Leaving the option of a move or overwatch when your happy with your turn. Hope that helps! :)

Also rush to get laser weapons, makes things far easier!

i cant decide if I should rush to laser or just rush to arc thrower and get early plasma

ive been trying the arc thrower route but I keep dying before it even becomes an issue

Marathon mode actually helps things, I find. With all the extra time it takes to get from one exposition cutscene to another, the game throws a load more of the smaller UFOs at you, giving you opportunities to level up a whole load of rookies, and get a sort of rotation thing going where injured soldiers can be replaced by soldiers who just got out of the infirmary.

I can answer that for you. I tried to rush Plasma in my last game and ran into a brick wall of the research time of plasma... the pistol was taking like 35 days alone....

Laser made everything a lot easier while working towards plasma and its pretty quick to research.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,743 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

you can rush to plasma quicker if you capture and interrogate a live Muton - gives you the plasma credit for research, and you get to keep their light plasma rifles and any pistols you've gotten from thinmen and sectoids. Thinmen have light rifles too sometimes.

Speaking of missed chances, my last recent mission I had a 99% chance to hit a sectoid with a 60% chance of critical, he was flanked and literally one tile away..... and I missed *sobs*

this game has me in such a bind

i'm just not good enough for classic, but i already beat it on normal and it just wouldn't be satisfying to play normal again

i'm going to be deleting and reinstalling this game every six months for the rest of my life

Play it again on normal but switch on a few of the 2nd wave options. Diminishing satellite returns, reduced funding, aliens that fire when encountered will add to the challenge without the life-messing jump to classic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭Cravez

As soon as you play Classic aliens have increased HP, Critical Chance, Aim and the restriction that only allows certain amount of aliens to attack one of your squad is disabled (so effectively with a map of 18 aliens, all 18 can attack just one of your squad. It is restricted 5 aliens in easy/normal). Also the AI becomes generally more aggressive than passive. I think thats what gets most people because pretty much sectoids become a danger from the get go with their increased aim and crit chance.

I completed Classic Ironman ages ago but during tactical missions I literally had to crawl during the missions because as soon as you move too far up and discover aliens you are usually fucked. My whole campaign was pretty much just move and overwatch/hunker per turn.

Id say just play the game more carefully, I would not use Dashing as much and pretty much move and shoot or move and overwatch/hunker per turn.

I read somewhere that the normal mode incorporates a mechanism to boost your accuracy which is absent on classic and impossible.

I second the Laser rush...then quickdash to Plasma. Enroute to laser's I got 2 live Muton's who got me research credits for Plasma later on. (Also got some lucky Thinman stuns so had some Light Plasma's on hand too)

is there any way to check the difficulty you're playing at in game?

cos like.. im pretty sure I picked classic, 99% sure... but i made it to june so far, and i'm doing really well.

I've barely made it to april every other time. Something suspect is going on here...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭Quatermain

There should be an option to change difficulty on the "pause menu", and you can check it on that. Otherwise, it should come up on the save file.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

yeah.. it said classic but.. that just cant be right

    the game seems fair

and i saved and checked the load menu, doesnt mention difficulty

jesus christ that mission with the chryssalids and the whaling ship

I was not prepared for that at all, completely brainfarted on the fact that chryssalids can jump onto roofs of buildings

    lost my favourite major :(

    That mission is a d*ck. A total d*ck. :)

Has anyone tried the long war mod yet? I'm thinking of installing but it seems like it makes the game a bit of a grind?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

About to attack the final ship now, 4 topped out snipers and an assault guy (for the times when you just have to kill that s.o.b.)

I might try to record it for the craic as this team is ridiculously OP. :)

Digby, get mimetic skin on sniper with In The Zone. Then do this :) (I'm very proud of mine :) )

Btw, I didnt realise the PSI trooper who uses the Gallop machine HAS to be wearing PSI Armour... the game gives the most unhelpful error of "this trooper is not of high enough level yet" if they arent.

    yeah.. it said classic but......

    the game seems fair.......

    Must be a bug!

As for the whaling ship mission...my first time getting it I had no upgraded weapons or armour......Wiped out before I even activated the beacon....that pretty much ended my game, was never able to recover from those 6 losses.

2nd time I got it (different campaign) I had Laser weapons and higher level soldiers. (High enough level that they could take a chrysallid hit and survive)
Managed OK as I sent in my Run&Gun/Close Combat/Shotgun Assault Major. She went in early while the sniper, heavy and 2 medics were on overwatch. (Rockets and grenades used enroute to destroy sharks) These were able to give covering fire as the chrysallids went after the lone scout heading to the beacon. Overlapping dashes after that got me back to the evac zone with the aliens nipping at my heels. So even thought I was prepared and had a plan it was still tight though. The 2 medics used all 6 of their medpacks.
