Sudden strong winds destroy 15 aircraft in Texas

    This was highlighted by vicwatson in the Aviation forum but it is interesting from a weather point of view. The metars for Meacham Airport, near Dallas, show winds rising to 66 knots in a matter of minutes, then dying down again, with the passage of a strong cold front.

    2253Z (1753 local) the wind is southerly 13 knots. Temperature 38 °C, sky clear.

    An hour later (2353Z), wind's picked up to[SIZE=-1] NW 17 gust 22 knots, with light rain and broken cloud. Temperature 36 °C, with a max of 41.1 reported.[/SIZE]

    Just 10 minutes later (0003Z), wind's howling NW 47 gusting 66 knots! Temperature's plummeted to 25 °C. The 66 knot gust was reported at 0001Z.

    Four minutes later the wind's still howling 49 gust 66 knots, with 1.75 mile visibility and temperature 23 °C. The windshift was reported as occuring at 2352Z.

    Eight minutes later (0015Z) the mean wind's died down to NNE 23 gust 64 knots, with heavy rain and temperature 22 °C.
