See what I meant about it turning into my "favourite game" OP?

Out of that list the most time I spent playing was Street Fighter 2. I can say I spent a considerable amount of my childhood playing SF2 with my mates on my Sega Mega Drive2. We used to have competitions with all my friens and they'ld go on for hours. They were real fun days.

Apart from that overall I think I spent the most time playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. I finished that game like 3 times and I still used to play it until last year when I got a windows 7 PC and the game wouldn't run on it anymore...

Among the modern games I have spent the most time playing borderlands. That game is seriously long with all the dlcs and 2nd playthroughs but I do love playing it! Can't wait to play the 2nd one soon but I need to finish the first game first!!

Another game I would mention is Uncharted 2. It was the most fun and prettiest (as in scenery wise) game I've ever played and one of the few games I bothered finishing twice...

"What's the best song of all time"

What's the best book of all time".

These questions don't really have answers because there's a million ways to answer it.

The most original? The most influential? The best selling? The best critically received? The most technologically advanced?

Quake, Starcraft, GTA 3 are what I'm going to swing for but I could easily remember another 20 later.

Most of my favourite aren't even on that list but if I had to choose it would be Oblivion and Super Metroid.

Super Metroid because it's such a perfectly crafted game which I only played again and cleared last week since playing it when I was a kid. Still blows all other 2D games out of the water, a lot have come close to it's greatness but never bettered.

Then Oblivion for giving me 170+ hours of solid fun. Kept me sane when I lived in Longford for 6 months :pac:

Best game of all time is subjective, really, but the closest and most universal game I can think of that people like playing is Tetris. Really was a great yet simple concept.

Noticed plenty of votes for Goldeneye. That is surely just nostalgia talking. Playing it now would be a terrible experience I think.

Poll has some strange choices. Not to include Super Mario World being one of them. So I voted 'other'.

I cannot believe Final Fantasy VII isn't on the list. I'm a sad Cloud :(

Time has not been kind to that game. It's an influential and important game but I'd be hard pressed to call it a good game let alone one of the greats.

Metal Gear Solid 3, closely followed by GTA: Vice City.

    Poll list is hugely flawed.

Too hard to pick one. Deus Ex, Half Life, System Shock 2, Ocarina of Time, Homeworld, and many others would be up there though.

    System Shock 2

A "best video game of all time" thread and no one has mentioned Shadow of the Colossus?

I guess it doesn't really matter, because the winner is clearly a toss up between Tie Fighter and Ghost Recon, which have also oddly not been mentioned.

But still SotC deserves to be mentioned at least.

Deus ex (if it was there) would get my vote anyway. Personal favorite and has to be up there any in top list.

In the absence of battlefield 2 and company of heroes I voted half life 2 .

    Wrong on both counts.

Picked MGS but if I had to pick just one it'd be Dark Souls. I'm playing Oblivion at the moment and it's dangerously addictive despite the abysmal leveling system.

Kain series of games from PS1 to PS2 (no exp of the PC versions) - all just great. Brilliantly scripted. Polished graphics for the time. Oddly only the gameplay of Soulreaver feels dated on the downloadable PSN version - also suffered on the visuals there. Defiance kind of let it all down a bit but all in all still a great series of games.

In terms of what has given me the most playtime, the most prolonged enjoyment and the best memories, I have to say World of Warcraft. I don't play it anymore but I've put over 2,800 hours into it and enjoyed most of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,924 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

i still havent voted... its a greatest game poll, but there are so many missing great games.

i would put warcraft 3 in there, because thx to it map editor. that editor is the reason we got few new genres having their own games and not just mods or custom map in games. Even warcraft 3 as game itself is/was legendary.

quake 2? do i need to say more?

fallout 2? a few dinosours on these forums will know what i am talking about.

minecraft. i would easily put that in the list, even if it is not an old game.

MGS is the only game brave enough to ask the question 'Can love blossom on the battlefield?'.

And by brave I mean badly written.

If ever a poll cried out for Atari Jaguar as an option, this is it.

There is no single greatest game ever. How can you argue that, say, A Link To the Past or Half-Life or Elite did what it did better than Tetris or R-Type or even Angry Birds? Those games are all classics or future classics, but all in their own way, and I wouldn't count any of them as being better than another, just "preferable" according to one's own tastes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

    Baldur's Gate OBVIOUSLY.

But Half Life 2 wouldn't be an incorrect answer.

Nah, MGS4 did more than enough to sully the franchise. Anyway I like MGS but it's hard to deny the writing is poor.

I'm a fan of the whole genre. I've played Splinter Cell games and Syphon Filter. Its the character development and plot throughout the series that has made MGS great. If it had to rely on gameplay solely, it may not be the best but it would be above average.

For me Its between Metal Gear Solid and Half Life 2, but since I can only vote for one I voted Metal Gear Solid.

Well you can say that, I don't agree and neither does MGS2's translator Agness Kaku who once said that MGS2 was the worst script she's ever read. The best MGS games had great gameplay and a silly plot that kept the game ticking forward at a steady pace.

I'd almost put Mass Effect and MGS on the same tier. I liked MGS2 the least. MGS Peace Walker was a fun game. If i want sillyness i'll play Saints Row or something like that

This question is pants, you cant have a best game ever without stepping on everyone elses toes. You may as well be asking who's the best athlete ever.

There should be different categories, pc, ps3/ps2/ps/megadrive/atari 2600/commodore 64/atariST/ etc..

Then.. you need to have a genre
    FPS/Strategy/racing/rpg/mmo/mmorpg/fighting/towerdefence etc..

At least then you might shorten the list down to something you might be able to put into a poll. Literally everyone will have their own favorite and therefore best game ever. And what's more is that, by this time next year those same people might have a new favorite. Hell it might not even take that long.

Anyway, i only seen one person who said systemshock2 and that's clearly the best game ever made, they even remade it as bioshock ffs!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,897 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well I definitely wouldn't say Mass Effect has great writing either, it's a silly, generic but effective space opera. Just like MGS it does it's job to keep the games pace up. It's no bad thing either, it's when the story gets in the way of the fun when problems start, case in point MGS2 and 4. MGS1, 3 and Mass Effect don't have great writing but it doesn't matter, it gets the job done. MGS just has a bigger share of cringe moments and I know that the localiser Jeremy Blaustein and Kojima had a big falling out due to Blaustein wanting to change some of the worst moments like the love blossoming on the battlefield line.

    Still love MGS1 :)

Hehe, that was a cheeky inclusion. Though as far as realising the potential of the hardware it appears on, it does it extremely well. It's a game designed to be played in very short bursts on the go, with very limited control options available, and I can think of very few other games that serve that purpose so well.

And as it happens, when a certain legendary games designer was asked what his favourite recent game from a rival developer was:
    Angry Birds, maybe.

What I like about Angry Birds is that it has a traditional videogame [feel] to it, but also a very creative side. And you can really feel that they’re having fun developing the game. That's what I like about it.
