HD LED TV

Hi

Just looking at all the options for buying a HD LED TV. Budget is from €500 up to about €750. Size about 37'' or so.

(1) Would like to be able to connect Hard Drive to play movies + TV shows through USB, (if possible, I know some of them can)

(2) Wifi capacity would be preferred

(3) Ability to use as a large computer monitor.

Basically I don't want to just go into Curry's, in Dublin, and buy a Telly if there are cheaper/ better options out there. Even just a few websites to check would help!! :) Or any tips for getting a TV. I just want to get a good deal considering the money and my head is a bit spun.

Is 3D of any importance? Pixmania have a sale on at the moment, I find them pretty damn good. Check out the LG one here down from €900 to €719. Better price than anything you'll get in Harvey Norman that wouldn't even have 3D.

To be honest, 3D is not really a priority, I should have included that. Just want a good quality HD LED TV which is going to sustain me for years to come. Know 3D is the big new thing but I think I can live without. Good to have that Pixmania site in mind, do you think it's better than curry's?

Thats a nice price, if it was me I would go with that TV, and you can pick it up in-store too or Argos usually deliver for like a tenner I think.

Dunno what you know about TVs but you want to look for a high resolution (at least 1920x1080) but that's a standard now, a high refresh rate for smoother picture (100 hertz is great), enough HDMI ports for your needs - cable box, sound system, console etc. Importantly that set seems Saorview compatible aswell judging from this thread . Looks like you missed out on an even better price a few months ago! Always worth taking a gander at the tvs in Tesco, they're usually crap or horrendously overpriced, but every now and then you get a bargain

Yea that does seem good I had always discounted Argos cause I find them very overpriced generally I am very tempted by that TV It probably has gone top of my list i'll have to think about it for a day or two.

Edit: just reading that thread you kindly posted, I'm having second doubts. I don't mind spending up to 750 if it's worth it might have a look in curry's at a panasonic they seem to be very highly regarded although not cheap

Also, does anyone know if you can use BBC Iplayer in Ireland? I'm sure you can't but they all advertise it. Starting to see that these TV manufacturers openly advertise Lies, to dupe people like me!!

i-player won't work here in Ireland.Most ads are just generic & usually aimed at the UK market so you see 4od,i-player etc. advertised with smart tv's

I think the 40'' samsung is the one! Really have a good feeling about that thanks a million for the link. There is a DID electrical right beside me as well.

Yeah works fine for 2d as well m8, re the samsung make sure to shop around and see if it can be gotton cheaper and try get DID to price match if it can

It's a tenner cheaper in Argos so should be able to get it for 550 in did considering their price promise and all that. You can play avi's etc. directly from HD so that's a huge tiping point. Sound is bad but that's the way it goes. Was on sale for 447 which is a great price too bad I missed that sale.

Incidently, you can get this Tv from Amazon for 490+ Euro but obviously their Freeview TV wouldn't be compatible here with Saorview. Shame. Lot of good reviews on amazon, problems are trivial e.g. no swivel capacity - I can handle that.

Ok just found the best price possible but it's from Pixmania don't know if it has Saorview nothing to suggest it does.

I dont see any mention of an mpeg-4 tunner which is whats needed for saorview, also noticed its on 50hz, might be better get a tv thats 100hz?

I am nearly certain this tv has saorview. Check it out here on soundstore. The same tv is €20 more, but it's an Irish company and they seem to do very cheap deliveries (pixmania delivery would definitely be about 20 quid or more). Good tv, I have never used soundstore but maybe others have some experience with them?

Edit: I have mailed richer sounds Kenny so maybe he might have a suggestion, the tv doesn't seem to be on the Irish site but I'm sure he could get it for you. Not sure but boardsies used to get a discount here too

There was a Hanspree in Did that looked better than the Samsung showing ESPN HD. The guy in the Did shop told me that any TV from the last two years, bought in the UK or over here, should be Saorview compatible.

Looking on Saorview it seems that HD freeview TVs in the Uk are comptible here, but not the freeview TVs.

Does anyone know if this Tv here would be considered HD freeview (it doesn't seem to say so, but the model is the same as all the others I have viewed which are all Saorview compatible... so unless this model is an older one, which wouldn't make sense to me...??? Does anyone follow!!??)

Oh yes, that one was the first I was interested in but after reading that thread about it lots of negative comments. Apparently it's not 100 hertz but only a 50 hz with a bullcrap classification. (i didn't understand myself, but the posters linked to proper online reviewers, who were complaining about it and explaining the reasons).

Finding it hard to get a TV that feels right. Everything is promising but further analysis always throws up complications. I guess that's the way. With my budget nothing is going to be perfect. Was surprised at the quality of the TVs in Did, I mean the picture on even the really expensive TVs was not very clear. Maybe it was their signal, as they all looked a little blurry.

I find many stores tend to not bother with supplying a constant hd video to display tvs, making them look like crap. Remember if you watch a dvd, or even a football match on standard definition RTE on a 42" tv its gonna look rubbish because it's not in hd.

If you are in Dublin you should pop in to richer sounds, or have a chat on the phone with 'em. This other thread has this TV:

It's ex-display stock but if you want a sound system/nice stand to go with it it would fall into budget nicely.

Bought off Pixmania for just over 500 Euro. Really happy some dodgy user reviews amongst good but if you look close enough there are always some problems with everything. Hopefully I made the right choice and get a good set. Happy for the connectivity, Wifi with Dongle, Plug in and play files including MKV. It was a good 100 - 150 cheaper than any shop selling new in Ireland. (666 on Richer Sounds/ 699 in Currys and Did electrical).

To all who helped me thanks for answering my questions and giving me some links. The pixmania idea came from an early poster.
