Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Do you ever pretend to be stupid?

In primary school it was more obvious that I had a better vocabulary than most but I quickly learned that there are certain people that were not too impressed by this (they felt stupid, and therefore thought it was ok to torment me) so I sometimes find myself using different words with different people.

If I have the feeling that they won't understand a certain word then I'll use a basic one instead. I had a group of friends when I was a teenager who weren't the smartest people you'll ever come across.

I didn't 'dumb myself down' with them but another girl in the group did, she is actually quite intelligent but often pretended to be stupid in order to fit in, really annoyed me.

Well, that explains why I could never pull a guy with my tactic of opening a discourse on Platonian oligarchy.

Luckily my knowledge of sci-fi stands me in good stead with the boys.

I only play stupid if I'm caught doing something; "Oh, am I not allowed to walk my dog here? I never knew..."

Worked for me. Was stopped at a checkpoint in Dublin before without an NCT disc (it was NCT'd, but I never bothered getting the paper) and just played the stupid bogger that was confused by driving around the big smoke.

I imagine guys are attracted to stupid girls because they think they are gullible and, therefore, easier to get into bed.

I don't act stupid but I do have friends who have totally different interests and wouldn't be bothered talking about stuff that is more "intellectual". So when I'm around them, I don't talk about that stuff.

Apparently George W Bush acted more stupid than he was to appease the American public. See below

    Yep, there was an awful lot he got away with because he was 'too stupid to know better.' Frightening how easily people can be led;

I don't say this much when in Ireland, but I voted for Bush when he ran for governor of Texas while I lived in Texas. He seemed to have his act together and was better than the alternatives. Then, when he ran for president, and became president his behavior turned more and more odd. Many of us thought it was the pressure, or maybe he was starting to lose it. He was a typical anti-gov Texan, but he changed while in top office. Just uncanny. I honestly believed he could have been great, but something changed in him along the way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjJAIuQz9D8 The governor of Texas and the president of the US were two different people. Parts of that are from this interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9SOVzMV2bc

And here he is recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpL7JQ7NoP4

I am wondering if it must be the stress, lack of sleep, or maybe the CIA just shares some absolutely terrifying things with you when you are briefed as president. Here's Obama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of61E1FesPU

not the same really, but i act mute sometimes.

Most people, especially the talkative type, hate awkward silences and will do their utmost to fill them up. Amazing the stuff they come out with.

This works especially well in business meetings. Bring up a topic, discuss for a while and then go mute. I've gotten so many improved offers this way.

When dealing with Social Welfare i always found i got on really well when i was the most stupidest brainless person that ever walked through the door. They were falling over themselves to help me out and were able to give me additional info that i didn't know i needed. They loved that power thing. Good times :D, thank god i'm working now

A female friend once told me she hated it when her friends dumbed themselves down so they could get guys to like them. I was shocked. But it did explain some of the comments I'd heard women come out with in the pub.

Have observed this a couple of time on nights out and it doesn't shock me anymore. It's this whole TOWIE culture that's taken off...
You have to wonder what kind of guys girls attract though when they act dumb... definitely not the marrying type :pac:

This is a recognised thing, and a lot of women don't even realise they're doing it. It's been studied over and over, and it's been proven that women perceived to be dumb are considered superficially more attractive. Women respond in kind by dumbing themselves down in the presence of males they find attractive.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9289125/Men-more-attracted-to-women-who-act-dumb.html

I see it happening, and I see it working, and I find it incredibly frustrating.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting article. My favourite part: 'Researchers said that at their core, the male of the species had changed little since Neanderthal times, when reproduction was their prime objective.'

    How true :P

I act stupid mostly when people are expressing their wrong opinion on a topic. Life's to short to argue so I just let it swoop over my head and dribble a little bit to keep the illusion going
