From the part of blackrock accommodation I've experienced it smelled like a hospital, had a haunted felling, really old building, long corridors etc.

Share kitchen between 4 I believe. Also has a sink at the end of your bed in your room and a loose wardrobe ( as in it wasn't built in).

Shabby (ironic considering its located in what is said to be a fairly affluent area of Dublin). But it gives you a roof over your head.

Now, I have to say that I'm sure lots of people enjoyed staying there and found advantages, but this post will mostly be disadvantages because I hated the kip.

I lived on the first floor and it was a pain in the arse walking downstairs every time you had to go to the kitchen. It'd be worse again if you were in east halls as you'd also have to walk through the corridors too (though there are kitchens over there for some rooms I think...). If you were on the ground floor though you'd have the problem of noise which would probably be worse. It was still a little bit noisy upstairs from time to time though.

Unless you socialised with the other people staying there it was depressing being stuck in your one room constantly. It's really awful having such a small personal space and being in the same little box.

There was no oven or grill, just hobs that, depending on what kitchen you're in, barley work. Buy a george forman or something, or if you're friendly with some people there, share one.

Blackrock is in a pretty bad location considering it's the far side of town from ucd rather than between the two. The 17 bus that goes to ucd is notoriously unreliable, infrequent and confusing but it only takes fifteen minutes or less. The buses from Blackrock to town are alright though. Again, unless you make friends with other tenants and can split the price, getting a taxi home on a night out will costs you twenty quid or more. It's actually a really nice area though and I recommend going to the park on a nice day or watching the ocean from near the DART station. There's a superquinn a short walk from halls and while it's not very cheap generaly, it does do very good deals.

I spose there are a few good things about it too though. The showers on the first floor West halls were very good and the bathrooms were clean. The water never really got properly cold, but if you shower at the right times the water was really hot.
A big advantage to only having a bedroom is that there were cleaners for the communal areas like kitchens and bathrooms. (Though the kitchens were closed from 10 to 12 in the morning for cleaning which was inconvenient)
There were a lot of international students staying there who were mostly friendly!
The grounds were beautiful with old building and trees and gardens. (It looked like Hogwarts in the snow)

Also, the thieving bastards at residences docked everyone in my kitchen 20 euro from the deposit at the end of the year because the fridge was dirty, which was extortion considering there were fifteen people. That's 300 quid to scrub a few stains. They made thousands charging all the other kitchens too.

That's all I can say about Blackrock though I thought I had more... If I think of anything I'll post it.

I hope somebody posts telling you of more good experiences there because I don't want to scare you! You can enjoy it if you're not a loner like me I'm sure :-)

Im gonna be staying in harolds cross and will have to take a bus to ucd . Anyone know how long roughly that'll take ??

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 Zoyo.

Hey, considering no-one will pick up the phone whenever I call UCD does anyone know if it's cool if I can move into my accommodation if I haven't already paid my registration fees ie. I'm waiting on a grant. I have paid the first part of my accommodation fee though. :D

I'll be living between harold's cross and Rathmines. I think you've to get two buses, the 18 (I think) and then the 11. I can't tell you for sure how long the journey would be but I'd say around half an hour maybe? Maybe more maybe less depending on time waiting between buses and your walk to the stop. I think I'm gonna try bike it on days with decent weather, it's not a bad cycle.

I'm 18, going into second year Science, the highest I can do is €420 a month, been looking on rent.ie, daft.ie, collegecribs.ie and just about anywhere else, any help at this stage would be MUCH appreciated!

Looking for accommodation in Dublin city centre, or near the campus itself. I'm a first year arts student, living in belgium. I'm not really fussy. Back to Ireland on sunday the 3rd. PM if anyone is interested. Cheers

I have been trying without success to make an online payment for UCD accommodation. Anyone else have a problem, is it a website problem. Have checked with the bank, and no problems there.
