Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have a very common Irish name. (not actually Lia!)

Never really liked it growing up because no one in countries outside Ireland I lived in could pronounce it.

I guess it's alright now. Still have to pronounce it about 10 times a day to American guests at the hotel I work in!

    Caoimhe??

Clare :) like the county not Claire! I hate when people put the 'i' in! Even some relatives put the 'i' in though they know I don't spell it like that! My whole life people have spelled it with an 'i' even if they have already seen the way I spell it! :pac:

When I grew up in the uk the pronunciation was an/thon/nee

When I moved back to Ireland it was ant/a/nee

Irish have trouble with the 'th' pronunciation.

I was just wondering how you pronounce Anthony? Nothing against your ma!
Actually, the th in Anthony is supposed to be pronounced like a t (like Thomas). The h was introduced based on a false etymology. More information here -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_(name)#Spelling_and_Pronunciation

    *Edit*
And I'm Seaghán. Seaghán is an earlier spelling of Seán and is pronounced the same way. I love the name Lasairfhíona; if I ever have a daughter I'll name her that.

My folks didn't even get passed the first page of "the big book of baby names"

I don't have a middle name either, it seems they were not too bothered about my arrival.

My parents couldn't afford a name book but they had a dictionary. My real first name is Aardvark:(

    I'm Louise.
I like it, but I constantly get people saying "Jeez, Louise" or "Please, Louise" and laughing their heads off

Also I really don't like the urban dictionary definitions for my name! Especially this one:

"When a man leaves his 'remains' after performing a sexual act on the girl/boys jeans."

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=louise

I thought my name was insipid and unimaginative. So when I had two boys I was determined to call them something strong and impossible to slag, shorten or lengthen. We have quite a rare and old surname. So I called them Jack and Mark.

Several people have commented at how strong the names are. One thing for sure they will be the ones slagging the poor kids called: 'River', 'Conan' or any of the other trendy names doing the rounds.

I hated that in school. They'd just take your surname, stick a Ni or O in front and then mash up the spelling so it sounds irish.

    Oh please don't.

I blame Home & Away circa 2003 for the outbreak of this name. Similar offenders include Zach, and Seth.

Seems to be some sort of spillover between the old testament and perceived surfer names.

I'm having a baby boy in a few weeks - just looked through this whole thread for inspiration.
Still no idea - don't want any of your names!

    I hate my name.
