Have a fender jazz bass american standard i bought ten years ago,
Do you need to replace the pickups after time etc or if it aint broken don’t fix it? Never let me down and sounds great just wondering as where i rest my thumb on pick up is getting worn

No need to replace the pick ups if they're working fine. They can be re-wound if absolutely necessary, and i'm sure the housing where you rest your thumb can be replaced too.

cheers, the black housing is grand its just the top polepiece is kind of black/worn from my thumb,is there a good pickup upgrade to get or are the orginal pick ups the best for a jazz? i play in a rock cover band but use slap/funk/picking style so not sure if I should upgrade

Pickups don't wear out. the magnets may weaken over (many) years but that's a vintager tone that people pay silly money for, right?

if the bass does what you want it to, I'd leave well enough alone, a touch with fine wet & dry paper will shine up the pole pieces, then a brush with clear nail varnish will keep it shiny.

there are a million pup upgrade options.

with the scratchplate you could pull all the electrics out and replace the lot, keeping the original intact to switch back if you wanted to.

if you know which end of a soldering iron is the hot end then you should be able to do all the wiring yourself as it really is very simple compared to soldering PBCs and repairing serious electronics.

www.guitarelectronics.com has a load of useful diagrams.

at the budget end of things guitarfetish.com are hard to beat, but a specialist Bass forum like talkbass.com will have all sorts of advice for you.

    Hello,

    In relation to your advert,

Jazz bass & Thumb rest issue,

You could install an actual Thumb rest?

    Ref: late 1960's/1970's Fender basses
Have you considered buying a Fender parts replacement.

It maybe an option for you to install a thumb rest?

There is a several European Co.s that supply fender spare parts.

In particular a Co. based in Germany stocks all Fender parts,

At present, I don't know the exact web site,
I'll find the link and post it later.
