Went to see Frank last night

I really enjoyed it but it is not without its flaws

Fassbender and Gleeson are excellent both bringing different elements to their roles, despite not being able to see his face for most of the movie Fassbender does an excellent job of conveying what Frank is thinking and feeling and his acting in the closing act is extremely strong
Gleeson's character is also a bit of a surprise as there is a lot more depth to it than you would think

I loved the music in it but I would think that if that isn't to your tastes then the movie might not be either and I felt there were moments of Wes Anderson-ess with musical interludes and whimsey on screen, also not to everyones tastes

The pacing of the movie is a bit of an issue, the section in the US seemed a bit rushed, I would have liked more time there to see things play out a bit more but I loved the Irish section and the recording of the album, some people have complained a bit about the way that Social media is included but I felt it was used pretty well and added nicely to the whole movie

Overall I very much enjoyed Frank, I was aware of the Frank Sidebottom character from my youth and this movie bears no real relation to that but that is no bad thing either

    "Conspiracy" (2001) on YouTube.

    HBO91783DVD.jpg

Strangely compulsive viewing. If somebody had told me that watching a variety of Nazis sitting around a large dining table for 90 minutes would be interesting ....This movie is a reconstruction of the 1942 Wannsee Conference where the 'final solution' of the Jewish problem was put together. An ultra-secret conference where Reinhard Heydrich (Kenneth Brannagh) pulled together the dispirit groups that ran Hitler's Germany, stiffened their resolve and decided on the minutiae of the extermination of the Jewish race in Europe. Essentially the fate of Europe's Jews was decided over one long day in Wannsee. Superb acting - in particularly by Brannagh - make this one worth watching. 10/10

    Kill List

I stupidly paid attention to those over in the 'After Hours' forum about this one, it had some good tension but the ending was disappointing and once I realised what was going on I was left wondering..."why"?

Anchorman 2 - as good as Anchorman 1, maybe a tad better - which makes it watchable and kinda funny in an odd way.

    If you liked 1 you'll like 2.

Seriously? I absolutely loved the first one, and found the second one just a massive disappointment and a poor film really

    Agree with you 100% Pheasant.

Having watched "Dredd" again, this time with my housemate (first viewing for her), I really feel it's what the Robocop reboot should have been, ultra violent, with proper swearwords.

Also, watched "Super" again, same viewing circumstances as above, think I liked it more this time. For some reason, didn't seem so bleak.

    She enjoyed both a lot.

For the girlfriends sake, I can tolerate a little mushy-ness in a movie every now and then...which lead us to watching Labor Day, having known nothing about it.

This was new heights of awful. I can't remember seeing anything as cheesy for a long time. It strikes me as something that came straight from the mind of a sex starved auld one.

I think we made it about half way, even the gf couldn't handle it after a while.

Probably some old url address at some point in topic. The warning might show the questionable address then you can report to a mod. :)

Anchorman 2 is the worst film i have seen in the last 2 years...anchorman 1 was a classic.

I thought Anchorman 1 was good but didn't get the hype around it. I thought Step Brothers was a lot better and more quotable.

Anchorman 2 was brilliant and a lot better than the first, imo.

Iron Man 2. Didn't care for this a great deal. It's alright, but doesn't add up to much, Stark was as arrogant and self-destructive as ever until he copped on. Then there's the military porn. Rourke's character seemed a bit wasted by being
reduced to mostly a guy hacking away via a computer, etc.

Watched the Tim Burton version of Batman again, it's quite cartoon ish and theatrical in execution and tone. Certainly compared to modern superheroes who take their cues from the memo issued by the Department of Brooding and Origins. Harvey Dent and anyone else is barely in it, but ya know, childhood nostalgia and all that. It feels somewhat dated, too.

Watched Captain Phillips last night. Excellent movie.

    Godzilla.

I'm kind of 50/50 about it.
Cranston's death so early, making the son lead role,
    was unexpected.

    American Mary
A long term member in my to watch pile I recently got around to this which has gotten a huge amount of love from the indy horror community and critics alike.

It centres on a down on her luck student surgeon that gets sucked into the underground body modification scene where she encounters increasingly bizarre people.

I will admit, I was expecting something at least somewhat enjoyable but tbh Im hard pressed to take anything worthy out of this. The story itself starts out well, takes an interesting turn when she meets Beatress but from there, nothing much happens.

I dont consider this a horror movie by any means, there is nothing cerebral about it, there is no tension, no fear, and the effects work, while decent are not really featured.

Imo its gotten so much love because it was written and directed by the twin Soska sisters (who also appear in the movie). Women behind the camera in horror are rare so they are the current darlings of the scene. They are certainly competent film makers and Im interested to see what they will do next.

Not a bad movie per se but very disappointing for me personally.

    5/10

It was one of my biggest complaints of the film to be honest would have been a far more interesting film if you had
A government cover up story with Cranston and his son trying to find the truth, with the Army and shady officals breeding the monsters then had the last third of the film with Godzilla kicking their ass and maybe have Cranston sacrificing himself to kill off one of the monsters

My other complaint is the complete waste of Elizabeth Olsen (this must have been a screen test for the Avengers) she could have been cut out of this film as well as the son without hurting it, Sally Hawkins (she deserves better) and especially Juliette Binoche
Her death in the first ten minutes was a waste but that scene with Cranston acting was the stand out scene in the whole film
    .

It's nowhere near as bad as many on here make out it's a solid 7/10 film but it could have been a darker smarter and sadder film, if Edwards and co didn't pander to the crowds.

    The Two Faces of January

Not the best adaption of Patricia Highsmith, I still think Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, Purple Noon (better then Talented Mr Ripley) and Wender's The American Friend are my favourite's but this isn't a bad film with Viggo Mortensen excellent as always and Oscar Isaac turning in a good solid performance. I thought the film got really good once
Kirsten Dunst get's killed off and it's a cat and mouse tale between Isaac and Viggo
    . 7/10

Don't get the love for Anchorman 2, it was such a disappointment although
The film is worth it for Harrison Ford turning into a Werewolf alone
but it just wasn't as funny as it should have been. It was never going to top the first film as Ferrell has been going down hill since the first film.

The Devil's Double Interesting story about Uday (son of Sadam) Hussein's body double. Scenery and sountrack work well, but ultimately, falls short of being really compelling. According to the end credits, Latif (the double) now lives in magical, mystical Ireland......wonder when he'll be on Lahv Lahn commenting on the good old days under Sadam? :D Entertaining enough though for a Sunday afternoon viewing - 5/10

Cedar Rapids I love Ed Helms in the US Office, but don't like The Hangover movies so I approched this with a mixture of excitement and fear. Also starring Anne Heche, John C. Reilly and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Clay "Sheeeeet" Davis from The Wire), it's the tale of a hick insurance salesman who goes to Cedar Rapids for an Insurance Sales Event and is about as exciting and funny as you'd imagine a movie about insurance sales people to be. I barely laughed, and when I did it was forced or very contrived - such as the repeated
Wire refernces by Isiah Whitlock's character, which grew tired very quickly!
. Has that "I'm an independent film so you should like me" feel about it. A very disappointing 4/10. :(

    'The Blind Side'

Being a hard edged, seen it all before cynical old b@stard I should have hated everything about this.

Loved it. (I may need help)

Finally got around to watching The Selfish Giant.

What a film. The two young leads are amazing and the direction is spot on. It's quite dark and grim, in both the story and the look of the film but it's not one of those films that just depresses the hell out of you. A really well made film definitely worth a watch.

    X-men first class

When I went to see this originally I had low expectations as the previous X-men film was pretty dire. But I was really impressed by this, mostly due to the Magneto storyline which to me could've carried an entire movie all by itself.
So it was on over the weekend and I decided to just watch the first 20minutes or so, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Fassbender is seriously good here, he makes the film. I mean James Mc Evoy is really good too but its the magneto character thats the most interesting. Kevin Bacon is brilliant as the bad guy and the scenes between him and fassbender are just so good and at a quality a lot higher than anything else in the film. The scene where fassbender ultimately takes him to the cleaners is magnificent.
New one is out this week and Im hoping for more of the same but I somehow doubt it.........

Saw Bad Neighbours over the weekend. Its not as funny as it thinks it is. Having said that Seth Rogen and in particular Rose Byrne are very good. Zac Efron is too pretty to be taken seriously as an actor, even in a comedy.

That Efron remark is ridiculous and does him a disservice. Sure he's an attractive man with crazy blue eyes but he's a damn fine actor to boot. Parkland, The Paperboy, Me and Orson Wells are just three films where he more than held his own against more seasoned and respected actors. He has the ability to become one of the greats if he keeps taking risks like he is now

The Day of the Jackal (Dir Fred Zinnemann 1973) - a film about an event which never happened to a real life figure is so absorbing and compelling I'm sure there are people who just assume its based on a true story. Although its not technically perfect what with cars of the late 60s and early 70s easily visible and the odd hippie haircut in the Liberation Day crowds it really doesn't matter. The transition of tone for the day of the assassination attempt is perfectly realised as the director and editor artfully integrate footage of the real ceremonies and close up scenes with the actors mingling.

Parkland I'll give you, he was decent in. Haven't seen the others. I'll retract the remark, but I'll be keeping an eye out for him....;)
