"Anton" (2008) last night on DVD. As bad a movie about the Troubles, or anything else, as I've ever watched. Plotless, poor direction, woeful acting - save for Gerard McSorley - even poor props (the British Army uniforms have to been seen to be believed!), at 96 minutes it was at least an hour too long...It was like something produced by FAS training scheme. Imdb gives the budget as €650,000 but it's difficult to see what it was spent on. Plot
= brothers on farm (south of border) get involved in IRA, usual futile subversive operations, garda brutality on an unbelievable scale, leading to a ridiculous final shoot-out..
That's 90 minutes of my life that I want back but as it was for research purposes I must suck it up. :D0/10

The Scent of Green Papaya - Tran Anh Hung's Vietnamese debut about a young girl hired as a servant by a well-to-do family. Set in a small handful of locations, and presented almost entirely without dialogue (you could probably fit the protagonist's lines on a single page and still have room for stage directions). What the film has going for it above all else is its extravagant, luxurious cinematography. I don't know if I've ever seen such an amazing HD transfer of a twenty year old film. I was a bit emotionally removed from the plot - this is a very theatrical, almost abstract film by design. Yet there's still something hypnotic and compelling about the experience, and luckily it also has a sense of humour about itself.

Black Narcissus - Powell and Pressburger's 1947 production that was, as is typical for the two, way ahead of its time. A thematically complex film that follows a group of nuns (led by newly pronounced Sister Superior Deborah Kerr) sent to a remote Himalayan palace. Beautifully extravagant production values are married to an extremely rich story. The nuns face cultural, personal and even sexual challenges as they adjust to life in a place where they're both helping and intruding upon the local population. A subtle, considered fable about British colonialism, the film does err towards the melodramatic during its third act but overall it's a smart, thought-provoking and elegantly made piece of work.

    Skyfall

Not really sure about the film but the girlfriend of the fella sitting behind me, well her dad is getting a new car soon. It's a four door mazda. "It's called a four door surely the boot has a door too? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha" + other empty headed baloney. A constant stream of diarrhea that never threatened to rise into the realm of revelance and dwelt solely in the vicinity of noise. Everything they said was just noise. Pointless. How do they plan their night like? "Oh, let's go to a film that neither of us have any interest in and play a game where we just say the first thing that pops into our heads. The stupider the better." If there is ever a referendum on the legalisation of abortion I'll think back to those two, and vote "Yes."

I'm so miffed I came home and tore off my clothes. MiloYossarian rants in his underpants.

Thanks, I probably went too far. That's the whole point though, the new Bond is fantastic. But I missed a lot of the details that would have elevated it. They talked over some major character moments. It just really took me out of the film. I didn't enjoy it half as much. I was mourning the loss of what would have been a great movie for me.

I don't really like the Craig Bonds as Bonds. My reason for this is that they are too influenced by the Bourne trilogy (yes I know there's a fourth). I want my Bond to be Bond and my Bourne to be Bourne, but Casino Royal was a really good movie, Quantum dipped slightly and Skyfall brings it right back up and to places I did not expect.

Not as bad but I had some muppet breathing disapprovingly through his nose and checking his phone for the entire film, pretty annoying.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this phenomenon of people nose-breathing obnoxiously in the cinema? It's so bizarre and it's literally been happening in the last 5 or so films I've gone to see.

Im not sure of the language you used or how to interpret it. But I got a general sense of exactly how I feel sometimes.
And I felt passionate towards it.
Also Johnny, 'exciled' is trash. Very bad film. I use simplistic terms because the film is ruuuu.........BISH.
that said.......I watched universal soldier; the reckoning.
I enjoyed it. Although the story is gone awry. Good fight scenes.

It's English...you don't need to interpret it because you clearly speak it.:D
    Just joking.

I agree with you. I regretted it and said as much in the post just after it. I didn't edit it though, because I wanted to stand by my mistakes. I only ever edit for spelling errors or if I think the post can be interpreted as insulting to somebody else. The post basically screams "Give me attention, give me attention."

Watched Garage tonight on Netflix, really enjoyed it great performance from Pat Shortt and was spot on capturing life in a rural irish village.

In a strange kind of way that reminds of another great Irish film... Parked

American Psycho: I enjoyed it although it was a little more corny and over acted than I would have expected from reading the book, especially the 'Hip to be Square' scene, just found that a little cringey.

When to see it today and liked it.

Apart from Javier Bardem who is top notch ,all the rest of the bad guys were forgettable.
Miss the crazy/eccentric hench-men of the past. Not a lot of gadgets either.

    True North

Scottish film about a crew out working on a trawler.
It's owned by the father and it's planned the son will inherit it one day

But times are hard and they are struggling and the bank is going to take the boat and forclose on the loans

Desperate times call for desperate measures and so they use a contact in Belgium to plan some cigarette smuggling.

Except it's not cigarettes they'll be bringing over!

I'll say no more, that's enough info

Top acting from the Scottish cast, great storyline, beautiful shots and the music worked very well

    Thumps up!

^^^ It's on my list. I believe some of it was shot in Ireland?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

Filmed in the Irish Sea off Dublin

I don't know where the Belgian port was filmed, probably Scotland. Was googling for a while but can't find it

Was partly funded by Bórd Scannán na hÉireann

The rest came from the BBC and the film council in Scotland

    the invisible war.

    http://m.imdb.com/title/tt2120152/

it's about rape/sexual assault in the American military. it's a startling, sad, shocking and well told documentary. very much worth a watch imo.

"When Brendan Met Trudy" (2000) - on a charity shop DVD tonight. I had been putting off watching it for months but tonight it felt right - as a short before the main feature. A surprisingly good comedic storyline about a geeky teacher Brendan (Peter McDonald) who falls for voluptuous burglar Trudy (Flora Montgomery). Cracks along well, only flagging slightly towards the end. Based on a story by Roddy Doyle. Recommended for light relief. 7/10

"The Lion in Winter" (1968) - Daily Mail promo DVD. Another movie that I had been putting off watching as I thought it would be fairly heavy going. Instead, I stayed awake - even with the lights off - for the whole movie. Anybody who thinks that the present British Royal Family is dysfunctional should watch this film! Henry II (Peter O'Toole), his estranged wife Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn) and his sons spend Christmas together. The succession to the throne being the only item on the agenda, the plotting and machinations are hard to follow at times but entertaining nonetheless. A young Timothy Dalton plays Philip II of France with an equally young Anthony Hopkins as Prince Richard. The film score by John Barry is also superb. Hasn't aged a day since it was made and would stand up well against any more recent period dramas. 9/10

    Seen SkyFall last night.

Nothing special. Didn't live up to any of the expectations I had. Obvious and simple.

Also without really looking too hard I notice at least half a dozen continuity mistakes, which is a pet hate of mine, and is just plain sloppy.....

Still one of the best opening credit sequences ever, hearing that theme tune booming out of the speakers was the best part of seeing Superman Returns.

I watched The Untouchables. From the reviews, I thought it would be spectacular. It was a terrible movie. Only watched it to the end incase it improved but sadly it did not. Connery was painful. Capone's hench men were cartoonish, but it didn't work. The film seemed confused as to whether it wanted to be light hearted or serious (baseball bat scene).

Perhaps my expectations of the film was too high after watching similar genre movies such as Once Upon A Time in America and Miller's Crossing lately.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,549 ✭✭✭✭Judgement Day

Too much is made of Sean Connery's acting/accent in his various movies - he's still cool - and The Untouchables is too! Outstanding quote from the movie 'just like a wapp to bring a knife to a gun fight' :D

The Last Exorcism - If you think a teenager making faces and bending over backwards is scary then this is for you. I thought it started off good but the last half hour is awful.

Bubba Ho-Tep - Brilliant and I would highly recommend it.

Poltergeist 2 - Turned it off after 20 minutes, garbage.

    Attack the Block (2011)
This was getting some decent comment about this movie, I thought it sound like something I would really like.

However I saw the whole movie today, I found it really disappointing , I Just could not get into this movie at all.

This movie start of when some early teens thugs mug a lady, only for alien to come crashing down on a car next to her,

Aliens were not scary but i liked how they made there eyes the teeth as well. that is the only thing that I liked in this movie

There were some bloody moment in the movie, nothing too gory and

I did not find this movie funny at all, was meant to be a Horror/comedy ? I did not laugh once in this movie.

I hated the ending of the movie, i just found whole movie really bland

The acting was decent from most of cast, some of the cast were really poor.

    Wilderness (2006/I)
I saw this movie once before a few years ago and I really enjoyed, I was so Shocked when saw this movie for 50p in a shop!

This movie some of the most vile nasty humans who are criminals and very unlikable l assholes, so when they die, you don't really care. You just want them to die in the most gruesome way possible.

This movie was really clever with the whole camouflage scenes, I found those scenes a little creepy as you have no idea is was there.

Some of the death scenes were really well made, it's amazing how they did that, very gory and gruesome when the dogs attack and the other Booby traps were really good as well.

The twist near the end was see able as it's was really a shock at all and I found the ending a bit silly, it's didn't really fit the plot the movie at all.

The acting was really good, the deaths were gruesome and nasty evil bloodhound teens had what was coming for them.(Yes I was rooting for nasty dogs (Yes I am dog lover)even these dogs seem nice the humans.

    Into the Mirror (2003)
I did see the remake first and over the past year the remake as grown on me, i didn't not mind the sequel to remake as well.

I don't what I was expected in this movie, this was more focus on the mystery and crime then horror part of the movie.

There no really tense atmosphere, I didn't find anything scary or creepy at all, i found some parts of the movie really boring at times.

The deaths scenes were a let down, I thought they be quite nasty but there were not as gory as I thought they be.

The acting in this movie was really good from everyone, (The both movies had the same ending.

5 out of 10 more of crime movie there horror.

    Something Evil (1972) (TV)
I never heard of this movie before, I had no idea that Steven Spielberg, was one who work in this low budget movie.

It's was not bad movie, this were some good spooky moment in the movie, the baby crying was creepy at first but then got annoying as goes on for bit to long,

There are some scenes in this movie, which are ALL MOST the as is other movie that made 10 years later Poltergeist. (Is little Girl in both movies)

This movie was little short, i Thought, ending, it felt the story still going, then about then second later the credits are rolling,

I felt there should have been a little aftermath of just happened but no!

The acting well, the both good and bad, this was a TV movie. Worth watching

    TerrorVision (1986)
I was 20 minutes in and I was like are you bloody serious, I knew the movie was going to be bad but had no idea it this kinda of bad.

For reason still wanted carry on watching the whole movie.

This as got to be the most cheesiest movie ever MADE, unbelievable cheesy.

Everything this movie was hilarious bad, from funny Aliens creature to, to godawful acting, the and really bad script.

All that. make this movie. ones of those that are so Bad that they are actually fun to watch,

    I give this movie a 5 out of 10

the Return of the Living Dead (1985)
    First time watch.

I heard a lot of good comments about this movie and I expected a lot more from this movie then I got.

First of all, i did not the group of teens at all, they just annoyed,, I could not wait for them to get killed, I was a little disappointing that, not all of them were killed by the end.

This movie did have some funny moment that did make me laugh a little, some of death were really good and bloody and a little funny as well and make up effects were decent.

I didn't the like the ending of the movie at all, I thought it was really rubbish way to end this movie,

The acting from some of the cast were really poor, other cast members did decent Job on this movie. . (I just wanted fun Watching this, like when I first saw Braindead Aka Dead Alive, (Which As become my FAV movie if all time) that movie was hell of a lot of fun.)

    5 out of 10

    Piranha (1978)
I not seen this movie for a really long.

As I have Seen 2010 remakes so many times, that love that movie like mad.

However this was still great, I thought it would feel dated now before I saw it again but it's did not feel dated at all.

A lady is looking for two teenagers, who killed night before as broke in to place with pool that contains Piranhas, while searching for teens they release the Piranha in the lake and soon people are been bitten to death

I really enjoyed the whole movie, there was nice bloody moments and there good gory moment as well in this movie, bite looks looked really nasty.

The make effect was really good, the Piranha looked really good, the effects at the start were a little fishing with some of odd creates in lab.

The acting was really good of most of the cast.

    7 out of 10

    The Video Dead (1987) (V)
    First time watch.

This had a little strange plot, well it new at the time, I liked the idea of Zombies come out of a TV set,

The zombies did look a bit scary. (the make up effects were really good) at first but as the movie goes you will find more funny, as do some really funny killing.

Were really funny death in scenes in this movie, This movie made me Jump in one scene lol, some so silly made me Jump.

There were some bloody moments in this movie was nice, there were not many gory moment in this movie.

The acting was really wooden for main lead boy, it felt like it was reading the link and not acting them out at all.

I liked the ending of this movie, I thought that was really good way to end the movie.

    5 out of 10

    Scarecrows (1988)
This is yet another first time watch.

Its' started of little slow first, then get be intruding, there were really good creepy moment from the scarecrows.

I liked how they turned the humans into scarecrows as a well, I did not expect that at all,

There were some really bloody moments in this movie but the rest of the movie felt a little bland.

This movie was a little to Dark in some scenes, you could not make it out

what going on and the acting in this movie from the most of the cast was really poor, the girl worst of them all.

5 out of 10 Not bad.

    Colour from the Dark (2008)
This one of those slow movies, which take times to bulled tense scenes,

This movie start of a little creepy at first and as the movie went on, I found the whole really bizarre in good away.

The most of the movie, they were a bit to many Dream scenes in this movie, at first it okay and then you get annoyed of them messing with you, your thinking to yourself, if this yet another dream or not.

Some of Dream scenes are really good, one Dream really gave me the creeps,

There were some bloody moment in this movie, Some were mixed with uneven Effects, will great but still good.

The acting in this movie was really good.

"The Lilac Bus" (1990) Daily Star promo DVD (not the one in the pic) - 10 cents from a local charity shop. Money well spent for 90 minutes of pre- Celtic Tiger escapism. No guns/drugs (excluding booze) or violence. Superb scenery, great cast, including the gorgeous Stephanie Beacham, and a story of intertwined, complicated lives written by the master (?) of the genre - the late Maeve Binchy. 10/10 as it ticks all the boxes and left me with a warm feeling inside. You can tell I'm in my dotage. :D

The Hunger Games - A film made for 12 year old girls that is overlong and has the worse use of flashbacks I have ever seen. It's watchable but I couldn't wait for it to end.

We watched two films over the weekend:
The Others as a Halloween family film. It was pretty good I thought. Didn't cop on to what was happening until 3/4 way through. Better than I expected, and creepy enough to be a little scary but not so much that the kids got upset.
Harvey with Jimmy Stewart. Any film with JS is worth watching. But the star of this one was the lady who played Veta - very funny in places. Good movie and the kids liked it.
