    Nightcrawler, great movie.

When Lou Bloom, a driven man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story. Aiding him in his effort is Nina, a TV-news veteran.

thoroughly enjoy The Riot Club. Posh English college snobs in a secret club, being debaucherous and murderous and getting away with it cos they're posh. Based on an actual secret club that's had a lot of of its members go on to be British Prime Ministers & power mongers/captains of industry..
    well worth a watch.

    Anyone seen Jimmy's Hall?
Ken Loach film about a guy deported from Ireland in the 30's for 'socialist' carry on...

"Donovan's Echo" (2011) on YouTube - listed as "White House Down".

A déjà vu thriller starring Danny Glover as a man who has lost wife and daughter in joyriding incident. When he returns to his hometown some years later history seems to be repeating itself...Fans of Danny Glover will enjoy - I did.

    "Don Jon"

A strange bit of a film, with an endearing quality. But one big question loomed large in my mind.

Didn't Jon not realise that there were such things as 'In-Private' browsing?

Poor aul Jon was a long time single.
    Old habits die hard.
Shouldn't have been at his laptop anyway.

    Goddammit Barbra!

I'm giving the Lord of the Rings trilogy another chance before deciding if it's worth watching the Hobbit films. Didn't care for the original trilogy the first time around. As far as I remember I enjoyed the first one somewhat, the second wasn't the best, and I continually rolled my eyes and checked my watch during the last one!

Well I've just finished parts 1 and 2 and my thoughts are still the same. Part 3 to go! Right now it's not looking good for the Hobbit's chances of being watched!" :D

Writing as someone who's read the LOTR books and the Hobbit...if you're not impressed by the LOTR flicks then don't bother watching the Hobbit movies.
As everybody said at the start - you can easily get 3 movies out of 1000+ pages (Lord of the Rings...due my Christmas rewatch soon). Knocking three movies out of a book (The Hobbit) you can read in an afternoon is impossible. Get the DVD / download it / spend the money on a movie that actually needs the cash.
Apart from the obvious moneymaking grab, The Hobbit only works as a prequel to the LOTR. The politics is nonexistent, the villains are pantomime rather than demonic, and Bilbo and company are no comparison to Frodo and Samwise. Even Gandalf is not what he becomes. Peter Jackson admitted in an interview that a new generation should watch the Hobbit flicks first then LOTR.

I enjoyed 'The Desolation of Smaug' more than I did 'An Unexpected Journey', I have to say. But, all in all, 'The Hobbit' films are "lesser" than 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Ideally, they should have been just two films and even that would have been stretching it a bit.

Stil, I am looking forward to the next film, as there is still quite a bit in them for it to be entertaining, which is something at least. Especially when so many AAA films turn out to be utter dross.

There's just too many unneeded additions in Peter Jackson's Hobbit films, like the ridiculous Radagast character, and it ends up suffering from bloat.

A two film Hobbit deal could have worked. 100 minutes each, bish, bash, bosh...done.

    RITUALS

I don't know where you can pick this one up, Code Red was supposed to do
a release a time ago, but if you get a chance catch it.

It's DELIVERENCE upping the ante with being lost in the outdoors; the always reliable
Hal Halbrook is the only cast name I remember offhand. He's one of a group of BONDING MALES
all out for the weekend in the wilds. The only thing is, ala DELIVERENCE, there's something
WILDER out there to get THEM.

Boorman's classic just always looked a little too polished if I may say; RITUALS really
puts you OUT THERE and REALLY DELIVERS.

    A little gem.

    MANIAC

The Olde One that is and the one that TOM SAVINI supposedly disowned.
Until his career, after DAY OF THE DEAD, disappeared down the crapper.

Anyways, MANIAC is probably the best of THE SLASHER YEARS. Though, his
THE PROWLER is not half bad either.

The EFX are HANDS ON textbook, Jay Chattaway's score unforgettable,
Joe Spinell pitch perfect punching above his own weight with the quite
wonderful Caroline Munroe, and A DUMMY payoff TO BOOT.

    A NICE PACKAGE.

    Valley uprising

Documentary from sender films charting the history of rock climbing in Yosemite valley from the 1950s onwards. Commentating on the wider social change in the States and documenting some of the major names in the climbing world from the past and present. Well worth a watch and beautifully filmed. Terrific landscapes, exhilarating footage and legendary athletes.

    COLD IN JULY

Just when you thought the 2014 thriller film had gone, girl, or
indeed had become a prisoner, along comes a substantial work
from the CLASSIC WORKS of the legendary JR LONDSDALE.

You would wonder why more films haven't been made from his
writings; just like Ramsey Campbell I suppose.

A film which starts one way and goes every which way but disappointing
boasts some terrific performances. Messy, intriguing and backtracking.

One of THE SLEEPERS OF THE YEAR.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

I've said it elsewhere, and i'll say it again, but without
Harry H Haltzman these MODERN DAY BOND YEARS sure have been
short of a pickin' on QUALITY.

I've just had THIS ONE On while posting here and it's GREAT
    ENTERTAINMENT.

From the JB score, the Ken Adam visuals, the cinematography
and production design. AND Christopher Lee.

It's very American, but it's the best Christmas movie ever, and just a fantastic movie in general.

    "You'll shoot your eye out!"

    A Christmas Story is awful.

    A Christmas Story is awful.
Thanks for that. You've changed my mind!

Nope, actually, it's still a classic. Maybe not for most Europeans, but it is for most Americans. Now, wash your mouth out with soap.

"Only one thing in the world could've dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window."

"Aunt Clara had for years laboured under the delusion that I was not only perpetually 4 years old, but also a girl."

"My father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium, a master."

    Come on, it's brilliant.

    A Hard Day's Night 1964 b&w

Never watched this before and was surprised at how good it is. Very quirky and funny in places.

The songs wonderfully performed, no strings attached - just the band. Clean and melodic early Beatles.

Gives you a hint of what all the fuss was about...

    The One I Love (2014)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2756032

Fun film about a couple trying to save their marriage by going on a retreat away together. Clever script, and the trailer above is too by not revealing the plot of the film. Highly recommended.

    TAXI DRIVER

    4k Res.

I've always thought CHINATOWN the best film of the '70s
and TAXI DRIVER the most important.

The urban tale of alienation with the questionable fantasy ending
coming just after the Vietnam war bang on the mid '70s is hard to beat.

But it's looked like a very poor picture postcard indeed on tape and disc.

With the 4k restoration (whatever) this masterpiece now looks as if you can
step right through into those '70s DAZE. It's A NICE JOB.

DeNiro certainly starred in some gems, didn't he?

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp 1943 (Dir Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger)

The epic telling of professional soldier Clive Candy's life and times from the end of the Boer War to 1943 is a serio-comic look at what it is to be "English" and how being a good sport or a gentleman gets you only so far in the face of true evil. Variously banned and drastically edited for years ITV4 are showing the fully restored 163 mins version quite a bit but alas with about 10 ad breaks so record this for your own sanity! The ageing of Roger Livesey as Clive Candy is very well done from lithe red-headed Lieutenant to rotund balding General while Deborah Kerr is as radiant as you'd expect in three separate yet very similar roles as women in Candy's life at different times. Watching now one is incredulous with regard to hostile reaction the film received on release but they were different times, now the portrayal of the themes and the sympathetic German figure (esp one who is more correct than Candy in his appraisal of what it takes to win a war) seems nuanced but in the midst of a real war it looked unpatriotic. Well worth seeing in glorious early Technicolor.

Colonel Blimp is wonderful. Caught it an hour in while channel surfing and ended up watching the remaining 100 minutes!

"A Belfast Story" (2013) on Netflix - another FREE trial!

Avoid at all costs. One of the worst movies about any aspect of the Northern Troubles that I have ever seen. PSNI Detective Colm Meaney plods around the North ostensibly searching for the people behind an apparently connected series of killings of former IRA operatives. He doesn't appear to actually do anything but instead shows up all over the place to view the corpses of the latest victim(s) of which there are an inordinate number.

He is accompanied on his travels by a completely unconvincing, and unarmed, PSNI constable. I thought all PSNI officers still carried arms? The PSNI constable has been placed with Meaney to spy on him and report directly back to the PSNI Chief Constable...

The story is lame, the acting poor, the locations (despite being in NI) lack any feel of the place and could have been shot on a studio lot. This is one bad mother of a film - apparently it was shot on a low budget and boy does it show. Unrateable. :D

    What?

That's the first I've heard of that.

I know some people who swear the guy's a right ass, but a "rapist"? That's new.
