Once again scraping the bottom of the barrel at Netflix "The Enemy Below" (1957) a WWII movie about the hunting down of a U boat by an American Destroyer. Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens star and while the tale is plausible enough, the 'special' effects are abysmal and it's no "Das Boot". 4/10 Don't waste an hour and a half of your life on it.

Get US netflix then if you think the Irish one is so bad.

Hoop Dreams - epic, poignant, insightful, uplifting, heartbreaking, maddening and still as pertinent and vital as it was when it was created. A three hour long documentary about two kids and their high school adventures in basketball. But it's so much more than that - a subtle, intelligent critique of the forces at play in American society and education. The running time flies by, and you kinda don't want the story to end. A cheesy porn-esque soundtrack is the only minor weaklink. Basically The Wire of sporting documentaries - maybe even documentaries full stop.

Took this recommendation and watched it today. Excellent movie. I really enjoyed it but I felt the three hour mark hit me but on the whole, it went by fairly quickly. The filmmakers merging of sports with a lot of themes such as the economic divide, pressure, influence of drugs, the state of America was masterful. Thoroughly agree with everything you say johnny_ultimate, highly reccomended.

Saw Intouchables last night at a local one of screening. A real crowd pleaser of a film I would recommend to anyone. The chemistry between the two leads was what really made it for me.

You keep making snide remarks about the Netflix content but even the Irish one has a hell of a lot of content. You are aware that there is far more stuff that that simply listed on the main page?

Just how many 'different' movies are there on Netflix.ie as many of them appear in multiple categories?

Last night on Netflix (!) I resorted to an ancient Clint Eastwood movie "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964) which still hits the spot and hasn't dated a bit. 'My mule don't like people laughing.... 10/10

There are thousands of films on there and far more than those listed in the categories. The 70 or so films listed in the category lists are just the most popular ones.

    Wow...1964 is ancient?

    :(

50/50 Comedy/drama with Joseph Gordon-Levitt where he discovers he has cancer. It charts his time with it. I really loved this film. Captivated throughout.

Expendables 2. Good harmless action fun.

"For a Few Dollars More" (1965) on Netflix - still can't find the thousands of other films supposedly available. Anyway, anyone that likes Spaghetti Westerns should give this a look-in. One of the best. 10/10

the homepage doesnt list everything, I do agree that the layout of netflix is crap, it needs a proper search function and genre filter not just movies that are somewhat related because you watched something else.

they should at least provide an a-z listing. cover art is nice but not really practical once the catalog reaches a point, and as it stands the search is ridiculously bad

Can people keep complaining about how crap Netflix is please? If so, we might get a few more of these handy lists

BTW i had not known that George Washington was on there. To my shame I've still not seen it.

    Paperman

This gorgeous black-and-white animated short played in front of Wreck-It Ralph in the US. I'm not sure if it is over here as well, but in any case Disney have been so kind as to put it on YouTube. It's awesome, watch it!

That, seriously how hard would it be to just have an A-Z? if it can match viewing preferences and all that a list of whatever's available cant be that much more difficult? doesnt even need to be genre filtered.

some of the recommendation titles are hilarious though "gritty 80's dramas with a tough female lead" was one for me once.

Just click on a genre on the Netflix site and filter it by A-Z. Handy enough.

    'night, Mother (1986)

Starring Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.

The plot is basically a one act film about a terminally depressed woman with a raft of personal problems (Spacek), as she sees it anyway, and her happy go lucky mother (Bancroft) who live alone together on the family farmstead down south. On the night we join them in the film, Spacek's character coldly tells her mother that she is going to commit suicide that night and the film is basically about the mother attempting to convince her child not to do so.

A good film. Pretty dark subject matter but if you enjoy films where it's just a sparse cast in a situation, trying to settle a disagreement then I highly recommend it. Great performances from both actresses. A bittersweet slice of life.

    12 Angry Men - 10/10

Some brilliant quotes in it as well:
Bright? He's a common ignorant slob. He don't even speak good English.
What is this? Love your underprivileged brother week?
What are we gonna do, play charades now?
    Juror #11: I beg pardon...
Juror #10: "I beg pardon?" What are you so polite about?
Juror #11: For the same reason you are not: it's the way I was brought up.
    Juror #10: Listen to me!
Juror #4: I have. Now sit down and don't open your mouth again.

Could watch it over and over and over again. Superb acting all round.

Juror #4 must be one of the biggest ***** I've seen in a film. Never been so delighted to see a chap put in his box like he was.

In fairness, it doesn't have a lot of competition.

I just watched Five minutes of heaven. Great acting from Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt.
An unbiased film about the troubles and reconciliation.

    Woochi

It turned out to be pretty good. The lead character has a roguish charm, Jack Sparrow lite. It's about a cocky wizard, a pipe, and some goblins.
There are some nice playful twists in the structure.

your dead right but i was actually quoting one or two reviews I've read in here and reviews on the news papers.
tbh i don't know what competition it has.

"Winter in Wartime" (2008) on Netflix. Dutch langauge WWII movie with English subtitles. A teenage boy finds a downed RAF pilot in the woods and helps him to hide from the searching Germans... Good, realistic movie and doesn't flag at all. Would recommend to a friend. 9/10
