watched "Wreck it Ralph" last night.

Easily one of the best movies I've seen this year. It's fun and sweet, and definitely worth checking out!

Wasn't going to bother with it until I saw M Bison and Bowser in the trailer :D

    Frozen River

A 40 something woman living in upstate New York finds herself down on her luck and turns to smuggling with the help of a Mohawk Indian girl. Together, they move illicit cargo from Canada to the US through a Mohawk reservation that straddles the border and is technically exempt from the jurisdiction of law men in either country.

Thought this was a pretty excellent film. It seems like it should be a downbeat film with the characters' situation but it's not depressing. It's part bleak human drama and part slow burning taut thriller.

    Silver Linings Playbook:

I said recently that Django was one of the best movies I'd seen in a while due to the soundtrack, characters, dialogue and performances, this is honestly up there with it.

Absolutely brilliant performances out of Cooper & Lawrence with special mention to De Niro, Weaver & Tucker. The script is brilliant and the conversations which take place are both funny but also very emotional when they need to be.

    Would highly recommend.

Went to see "The Chrysalis" last night in the Lighthouse. Its a chinese horror murder mystery. It is pretty derivitive and seems like an Asian horror by numbers, it has a pretty sweet twist at the end that turns the whole film on its head, ala 6th sense. Worth seeking out if you are a fan of the asian horror genre

"Winter in Wartime" (2008) on Netflix. Dutch langauge WWII movie with English subtitles. A teenage boy finds a downed RAF pilot in the woods and helps him to hide from the searching Germans... Good, realistic movie and doesn't flag at all. Would recommend to a friend. 9/10

Great film, the kid is outstanding in it.

Tyrannosaur I like this type of film, and enjoyed it but it didn't really do anything new or unexpected....

    Total Recall Not bad.

Lords of Dogtown Loved it, can't wait to see Dogtown and Z-Boys...

The Perks of being a Wallflower.

Wow. What a movie. Brought me right back to being 16 again. Feels unfair calling it a coming of age movie as, for me, nothing in the genre comes close to how brilliant this is.

That, seriously how hard would it be to just have an A-Z? if it can match viewing preferences and all that a list of whatever's available cant be that much more difficult? doesnt even need to be genre filtered.

some of the recommendation titles are hilarious though "gritty 80's dramas with a tough female lead" was one for me once.

have you checked out letterboxd.com yet? it seems to have some sort of netflix queuing integrated which might be of some use to us netflix subscribers (havent tried that myself yet as im on the irish one).

the site just came out of beta a few days ago and i think they might be charging for some features since then, but it's worth a look anyway. it's very handy for cataloguing what you've seen and reading reviews from other users

The Man with the Iron Fists Good fun...a little self indulgent on Rza's part..but hey if I made a film where I was the hero I'd do the same!!:D

    First Wives Club

An oldie, but I've never seen the whole thing before. It's very enjoyable, very silly at times but quite funny too. Bette Midler is hilarious.

So you've watched Drive? Shame? Oldboy? Battle Royale? 50/50? Amelie? Hidden (Caché)? The Lives of Others? Y Tu Mama Tambien? The Bicycle Thief? Tell No One? Twilight Samurai? The Conformist? George Washington? Exit Through the Gift Shop? Fargo? There Will Be Blood? Almost Famous? O Brother Where Art Thou? Jackie Brown? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? The Turin Horse? Certified Copy? Annie Hall? Some Like It Hot? Double Indemnity? The Life Aquatic? Thief? Secretary? Fish Tank? Tabloid? White Material? Ed Wood? Requiem for a Dream? 25th Hour? Glengarry Glen Ross? Ghost World? The Insider? Mysterious Skin? Once? Bad Lieutenant (Old & New)? Synecdoche New York? The Long Goodbye? Rachel Getting Married? Waking Life? Departures? Morvern Callar? As If I'm Not There? To Catch a Thief? The Interrupters? Mugabe and the White African? Indie Game the Movie? The Skin I Live In?

    Fair play if so!

I've seen most of them, for anyone who hasn't, there's some cracking movies in that list, in fact, you have good taste. I watched Twilight Samurai earlier thanks to that post. Good movie.
I do have grievances with Netflix though. So much stuff I want to see that is available in the US is not available on the Irish version.
Some great TV series are on there though.
Breaking Bad (I'd seen all of it before Netflix, but if you haven't, watch it, it is incredible, every episode is on there, I can't recommend Breaking Bad enough.)
Arrested Development, brilliant, I only discovered this recently, years later, then watched all of it, funny ****.
The Killing, the Danish one, only the first series is on there, but it's great.
It's worth it for me to pay the subscription at the moment, but it does piss me off that so much stuff is not available in Ireland.

kinda surprised theres not a thread on it here myself.

didnt think the first half was that great. TBH i couldnt help thinking kids wouldnt have a clue who half the characters were.

but it REALLY picks up in the second half and im not ashamed to admit i shed a tear here and there.
when he was smashing up vanelopes car to stop her racing
    .

didnt see the twist coming either which is some feat as i usually see stuff like that a mile off.

    class film.

Skyfall. Really good, speacially compared to Quantum of Solace (I believe I din't understand it yet.... :(). Stands up there with Casino Royale in the new franchise.

    And the end...

    i thought skyfall was i a disaster
the excavator and the train looked ridiculous, and the part with the auld one toward the end was crazy

"Black Book" 2006 on Netflix. Excellent Dutch language (with English subtitles) WWII movie. Gritty, realistic movie about the experiences of a Jewish member of the Dutch Resistance movement who infiltrates Gestapo HQ. Plenty of treachery and intrigue. 10/10

Paranorman, loved it, loads of charm, very funny and surprisingly dark in places for a kids film.

The Deep Blue Sea - Not to be confused with that one about a cruise ship. Nearly didn't make it very far with this one. An overblown, oddly-structured opening almost killed the film in its tracks for me. Just didn't feel I was in the mood for it. But I did, and luckily it improved. An old-fashioned melodrama, the film (Terence Davies' adaptation of a play from the 1950s) follows the breakdown of a relationship between a couple played by Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston over the course of around 24 hours (with scattered flashbacks). The film's theatrical origins are obvious - it's talky, confined to a few locations and with several intense dialogues that last quite a while. But Davies makes great use out of the sometimes limited settings, and much of the cinematography is intoxicating. Most importantly, Rachel Weisz is completely transfixing. Not since Darren Aronofsky's love letter to her (The Fountain) have her radiant looks and intense acting talent been put to such good use.

The script does occasionally comes across as a bit of a relic: there are times when the film is melodramatic and theatrical to an absolute fault. But through strong directing and acting, and several particularly powerful scenes (Simon Russell Beale's - playing Weisz' estranged husband - appearances are also excellent), it manages to just about overcome its limitations.

Thought that was awful myself. :p

Watched Breach last night, decent espionage thriller, great performance by Chris Cooper.

Psycho! Hitches black comedy of manners cunning disguised as a horror thriller. Anthony Perkins is just fantastic - positively clammy/awkward, nearly toe curling and then splendidly freaky in the final scene as we hear his thoughts and the evil glint and half smile.

Have you seen any of Davies's other films? If not, this (and most of his recent filmography) isn't a good introduction. It demonstrates his visual skill but lacks the passion of his more personal films. I'd strongly recommend The Long Day Closes and Distant Voices, Still Lives.

    The Night Listener

A late night radio DJ (Robin Williams) hosts a show where he reads excerpts of stories over the mic. A book lands on his desk, the alleged autobiography of a teenager (Rory Culkin) subjected to abuse as a boy. He quickly forms a bond with the boy and his mother (Toni Collette) over the phone but the boy may not be what he seems.

Pretty decent creepy thriller. Robin Williams doing his slightly melancholy creepy man routine but Collette is the winner in this one. A fairly unnerving performance from her.

"Distant Lives" is outstanding, quite bleak but essential viewing.

The last 4 nights, I've watched each of the 4 die hards. Really enjoyed the first three but watching the 4th tonight on the back of them, there was a significant drop in quality. Weak story, boring "sidekick" and not enough blood and swearing. Hope the new once can be an improvement but hopes aren't all that high.

Don't hold your breath, Die Hard 5 has been edited down and it will be released here as a 12A film, don't expect to see much blood or swearing in this one either! :(

That's in the UK. Over here the IFCO have given it a 15A. It seems unlikely it's the cut version. However, the DVD/Blu-ray will be.
