VW Golf Alloys....Questions and Suggestions

    Hi,

Just looking for some help/info/advice and I don't know a whole pile about this stuff so here goes......

I have a really clean 05 Golf 105bhp sportline (see pic).

Over the next month or so I plan to get it remapped and a few small bits done to it.

Its going to get a front splitter, shark fin aerial and light tint on the windows.

I need some help with the alloys. As you can see it currently sits on standard VW 16" alloys. I really like the 18" multi-spoke R32 wheels and would like to put them on it...

    1. Will 18's look bad under it if the car isn't lowered?

    2. I do about 100kms a day commute on a poor enough road, and therefore, what would be the biggest profile tyre that I could put on to try and keep the drive some bit comfortable???

    3. Should I lower the car?

    Any other suggestions welcome!!!

    Cheers

rs6s or BBS lms would look very well on it

Cheers I'll have a look.....Would low profiles make the ride uncomfortable?

They only sell reps but the prices seem to be fair. (scroll down the page and you will find the R32 alloy)

As with everything you do have pros and cons with replica alloy wheels, generally they are slightly heavier than the original and the material fromwhich they are made from is generally a poor quality.

There are some very good VAG forums which will give you some great advice onwhat could be done to the car.

Depending on suspension stiffness they can make a noticeable difference.

My car is almost identical to yours but I have standard wheels. Would you be interested in selling the wheels and tyres you have if you upgrade? PM me if you like.

Jimmy Crack Corn, I was going to just leave it with the standard suspension for the moment?

Little Big Planet, I will certainly consider it!!! They look very nice.

I saw a mk5 identical to mine a few weeks ago, it had the r32 wheels, but they had been blasted and resprayed cream. Sounds strange but it looked top class

    Wax, I'll PM you!!

Stay away from the felt spec reps (lms /rs4s/rs6s/A5V). Unless you want to look like the laaaads with the pigeon exhausts and 6 foot sun visors :P

Certainly don't want to look like them!!!!!! gonna keep it very subtle....

The shark fin aerial is proving a serious difficulty!!! Bought one off the internet, but it has a signal amp and needs a power supply. And I am certainly not going to the rounds necessary to wire it!!! I think I'll go and buy a stubby aerial and it will look like the older GTI's

Got this one myself. Same supplier as OEM use supposedly.

I recently changed the head unit in a 2007 polo and the standard aerial has some form of signal booster and there is a pre wired terminal there for it. i asume your golf would be much the same.

Firstly, lovely Golf, great colour. Well wear.

I think 18's fill the arches best on MK5's. Something OEM looking, I wouldn't go for anything mad or tacky. German cars look best with OEM+ mods IMO - understated and classy.

If money is tight, Reps may be your best option. I think a nice set of BBS CH's would look lovely. They came standard in 18x7.5 on the ED30 GTI. Keep an eye on owners club forums, you will occasionally find a few nice OEM genuine sets for the right money. Autostadt.ie is a good place to start.

I think any car on 17" plus alloy wheels will look very odd without being lowered - like a 4x4/tractor gone wrong. Something like a H&R cup kit would sit your golf nicely in the arches. Steer clear from JOM/Rokkor cheapie coilovers. Apart from the poor enough quality, you won't be happy with them for a 100km commute. Any I've driven felt like a go-kart (bouncy back breaker on any surface that isn't completely smooth)

Smaller wheels/bigger tyres will inevitably be more comfortable. I've never had any comfort issues running 18x8.5's with 225-45-R18 (stretched) & a H&R cup kit. If anything it's more comfortable than standard.

Keith in alloy-wheels.ie is a mind of information on anything VAG related. It's worth giving him a call even if it's just for advice. They are a suspension/wheel/tyre specialist, best prices around.
