drug testing athletes

    Drug testing athletes obviously costs a lot.

    Who does the testing ?

    Who funds the testing ?

    Who gets tested (whats the criteria to be on the list of athletes to be tested)

    Do athletes from in different countries get tested with the same frequency, and for the same things ?

    Finally, is there a publically available log to see when any given athlete was tested ? Like, could someone check, for each olympic medalist in athletics when these athletes were tested ?

    Dont know all the answers but ill try answer what I can

    Who does the testing:

    Many nations have there own anti doping agencies operating under WADA. There is also the IAAF which carry out there own testing

    Who funds testing:

    WADA is funded by both governments and the Olympic movement. The OM matches what ever governments fund

    Criteria:

    WADA base their selection process on a number of factors which aim to make best use of funds. There is target testing (see below for criteria for target testing) but they also do random testing past this
    a) Abnormal biological parameters (blood parameters, steroid profiles, etc);
    b) Injury;
    c) Withdrawal or absence from expected Competition;
    d) Going into or coming out of retirement;
    e) Behaviour indicating doping;
    f) Sudden major improvements in performance;
    g) Repeated failure to provide Whereabouts Filings;
    h) Whereabouts Filings that may indicate a potential increase in the risk of
    doping, including moving to a remote location;
    i) Athlete sport performance history;
    j) Athlete age, e.g. approaching retirement, move from junior to senior
    level;
    k) Athlete test history;
    l) Athlete reinstatement after a period of Ineligibility;
    m) Financial incentives for improved performance, such as prize money or
    sponsorship opportunities;
    n) Athlete association with a third party such as coach or doctor with a
    history of involvement in doping; and
    o) Reliable information from a third party.

    IAAF pool for testing is anyone who is ranked in the top 50 within their event and is weighted on similar criteria to the above

    Do athletes get tested equally:
    This would depend on the countries Anti Doping program but as with the list above there are criteria which means that some countries could be tested more than others for suspicious behaviour of athletes etc

    List of athletes?
    Regarding athletes in the Olympics there were over 400 tests carried out a day throughtout the competition with over half of all athletes being tested as far as I am aware. I also know that A Felix was tested on yesterday in an out of competition test

    With regards Felix, and a few others (Tyson Gay I think), she gets tested even more than most athletes as she has signed up to WADA's Project Believe campaign, and so undertakes extra voluntary blood testing on a regular basis. That's my understanding of it anyway.

    Seems that they also have to test the Paralympic athletes who have spinal injuries to be sure that they are not deliberately breaking their own bones. :eek:

    Break a bone or cause yourself some "pain" that you cannot feel due to the spinal injury and this increased the blood pressure and you perform better.
