If you had the money to buy 2 cars and rotate the usage they would last twice as long due to less mileage, wear and tear etc. .

Rotating two pairs of shoes they will actually last longer than simply x2, usually about x2.5 longer AND they dont depreciate while sitting there! ;)

Currently only have a single pair of Asics DS Trainers,
with 1800K on the clock, it may be time to move them to the recreational pile.

Might be a good thread for those who are considering changing runners

    Race
Saucony Grid Fastwitch 5's with lock laces

I love these. I had used Mizuno Elixirs for a good while and just never felt fully comfortable in them. Im a mid foot striker towards the outside (majorly so on the left foot) and these seem perfect. They feel nice and light but still feel robust enough. Best of all i feel fast in them! Im almost due an upgrade though as the left shoe is beginning to show signs of wear on the outside mid part where i have an unusually strong impact (so much so i was asked did i ever break my ankle as on video analysis my left foot stwists slighjtly sideways just before impact!)

    Training
Mizuno Wave Rider 14's with normal laces
I like these but cant help but think i need a change. Ive worn these for about 4 years now and never had any issues as such but i believe they're more designed with the heel striker in mind which i am not.

So what you on? Care to recommend a trainer midfoot striker netutral shoe?

since nobody actually has answered the original question, ie should you change runners that do the job for you
    this might help a bit

I'm a neutral runner and below is what I have on the go at the moment (I like to rotate :p).
Tempos are used for LSRs, Manas were for racing 5M to Marathon - now replaced with ST5, Response Cushions & NB 849 (bad bargin bin impulse buys, wear for fannying about), Pro4 racing 5k and less, a few specialist spikes and trail stuff. Any my current training favs Road X-233 (6mm drop) and X-255 (9mm drop), plus the f Lite 230's are beautiful on grass.

    Brooks adrenaline 11
    Brooks Beast
Mizuno Wave Rider 7 (3 pairs)
    Salomon Speedcross 2
    New Balance MT 10 Minimus

The first three pairs have replaced the perfect Brooks Adrenaline 8's, and I've been getting severe knee problems ever since. Gait analysis has suggested I need a motion control with lots of heel impact (I'm a fatty), but I've given up on them all now. I've tried running in the Salomon (which usually are just mountain shoes), and they seem to have helped the knees. Yesterday was my first (trail) run in the MB MT10's, which are almost barefoot shoes. It's the last throw of the dice for my knee pain, and so far so good, I woke up this morning pain free for the first time in ages.

Asics Nimbus for training and up until yesterday for racing in Tris too.
Saucony Kinvara 1 for road racing and some shorter training runs.
I used to run barefoot a good bit too but haven't been doing any in a while.

Thanks to a great deal on a lovely pair of Saucony Kinvara 3 from amphkingwest I'll be wearing these for Tris next season!

This is the first year that I haven't rotated shoes. Not sure why but it just worked out that way.

Got a bit carried away with the new minimus zeros and was wearing them for every run bar LSR's for a couple of weeks. Unhappy calves right now. :(

Got a new pair of Saucony Fastwitch 5's but feck me they are rank! They're bloody luminous yellow and supposedly thats the only colour for the autumn/winter range! The red/white i had was perfect. I got some funny looks on their maiden voyage.

May I ask where you got the Fastwitch's I am thinking of moving from Asics to something else.

Or can anyone suggest a nice shoe for the marathon.
    thanks

Which Asics are you in? And how has it been for you?

I loved the green 5's but prefer my tiger striped Mizuno Elixir.

    thanks,
at the moment in DS trainer, and find them fine, done close to 2K in them
not sure if I should change from them as I have had no problems but then again:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,468 ✭✭✭sconhome

Nearly :D at your 2K and then realised and went

Lightweight, mild supportive shoe that the DS trainer is. Logic says change nothing, it's working well, have another pair in backup for the final few weeks into DCM.

Options to look at would include Saucony Guide, Brooks Ravenna, Mizuno Inspire / Elixir.

Advice would be to stay as you are and change (bar new DS Trainer) nothing this side of DCM.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,173 ✭✭✭BennyMul

thanks, I have a few little niggles and have a feeling it may be shoe related, so will get new ds to get me over DCM and then look for a change.

    thanks again.

I had been wearing Asics Nimbus for a while with orthotics but changed to New Balance 1080 V2 early this year after a decent B+M fitting session. Starting to feel wear on them now and considering just getting the same again as they do the job. No real knowledge of shoe types so am I in the right ballpark? I think I'm a heel striker as I'm not fast :o

    Any advice / comments?

Both neutral runners, i Moved from Nimbus to NB but the 1080 V2 haven't enough cushioning in the front for me so i went for Brooks Ghost 4 which i love and last week got a pair of Brooks Ghost 5 !

I got mine in Runways. They were €90 there which was the cheapest id seen anywhere

I really really like them but runners are a personal thing. I find myself running in them daily now. Only problem is they wont last as long as the old trainer i had used (Waveriders). U? fortunately i'm a UK13 in Saucony runners so im waiting on some 13s to come into Runways to try out some trainers that would take more of a beating. Waveriders really don't suit me, i barely touch the heel these days and never seem to have any wear there.

I'm a neutral with a mid- to forefoot strike.

I am currently in Nike Flex - no problems. they're light and perfect for neutral & my strike pattern.

I'm thinking ahead to when I will replace etc. but don't want to change too much as these work for me but I want a little more cushion in the mid/forefoot section and a bit lighter. I do 5km & 10 km roadracing...

Currently lookng at Nike Zoom Eite...but would be interested in anyone's suggestions, advice or recommendations or upgrades...

Also, how do returns work if you have problems with a shoe? I had to bring a an Asics back to Elvery's as it was totally the wrong shoe for me and it was a women's shoe - I'm a bloke btw.

    Cheers.

I run in Nike Zoom Elite 4s and Nike Zoom Elite 5s.

The 5 is a nice enough show but it is no 4 and I will not be continuing to buy them after I kill this pair. Its just not the same, close but the sole is a little springier and the heel-toe ramp is marginally more

Amp what would you recomend as a miminimal 0 drop wide runner? Will be running on grass/trail only. Have very wide forefeet.

Try the Inov-8 Trailroc, not sure how they stack with regards to width fitting, but they're pretty roomy from the arch to the toe box.

I definitly need a shoe that has special 'wide' version. A normal shoe that is a little wide just dont quiet cut it.

But if those Inov-8 have a special wide version then maybe they are the ones I need.

OMG - had no idea !!!
Thought I was doing OK by choosing Asics!

Has that changed as being the " best" brand?

I'm doing about 10k every other day in them while running around outside in them over rough pathways in the park.

My sock is beginning to show through the mesh & was thinking I might have to change soon.

Any suggestions? I've had them since 2005 or so & lam quite attached - love them ; v comfy never any problems.

Theres no "best" brand, its whatever is best for you. Get gait done, you'll be presented with a few options and you pick the ones that feel best to you ( but will be the correct one for your running style )

My wife wasn't happy with her runners and got gait, the style of shoe was right but she was wearing the wrong size............simple but made a major difference.

New Balance are doing their Minimus range in 2E fittings which are wide. As Beepbeep suggests inov8 are anatomical fit, so they allow for the natural width and splay of the feet. Might not be broad enough though.

The Minimus trail is also available 2E and in 4mm or 0 drop so could be an option.

    Tweaked that for you :)

ASICS are extremely well know on account of their broad market reach and availability. The mind boggles at the amount of specialist running shoe companies, there appears to be a new brand appearing every couple of weeks with more and more specific footwear ranges.

I'm doing about 10k every other day in them while running around outside in them over rough pathways in the park.

If a shoe is working for you, it is perfection. When I hear of people blistering and having to 'break' shoes in for ages, its a real indicator of shoes not suiting the individual.

Good advice there from Elvis too, so many small factors in fitting running shoes that add up to it being right or wrong for you.

Have you tried the 8mm in the new Saucony Triumph 10?

The beauty of the Wave Rider is the heel is so light and flexible, if you barely land on it the heel has little or no effect on your stride yet if you have a big heel landing it can flex, absorb and guide your foot through to the toes.

If you like Mizuno the Wave Precision could be one to try on. Or the Ronin (more of a racer but stronger than the Fastwitch)
