Decided to see a Movie today with the wife (Bourne Legacy very good BTW)

Anyway for 2 People at Lunchtime it came to 37 Dollars tickets alone.

37 Dollars that is a stupid amount to pay for a movie.

Its not a uncommon price. So what is it that makes movies here so expensive??

My local in Perth is $17 each and $10 for a Meidum popcorn and drink.

So about $55 for 2 people..

Dont know what makes it so expensive.

It is totally ridiculous how much they charge for cinema here.

I try to go to Nova in Carlton on Monday:$9 after 4pm, $6 before I think. But now I work Monday nights so that Is a no go. If you're near Palace cinemas they have great deals if you join for $10(I think) and you get 2 free tix a year!
Otherwise Tues is cheap night at mainstream cinemas. It is a joke here.

I spent 6 mth in California last year and 13$ is the very most I paid to go to cinema and that was for a 3D. It would be 20something for 3D here.

Yet another example of how Australia has priced itself out on the simplest of things

My home phone/Internet is with Optus and I can buy movie tickets from them for $10.

My health insurance is with BUPA I can buy movie tickets from them for $10.50

I buy tickets from the above online and load them into my iPhone app, I just jump into the Online lane they scan my iPhone. Usually buy a couple of bottles of water and bag of sweets from Coles.

Like you say ....why would you be stupid enough to pay $37 ?

Btw is that Bourne movie any good?

Yeah, that Optus deal is excellent. Went to Moonlight cinema in Botanic Gardens in Melbourne few times last summer for $10 each. Especially good as you can bring your own food/wine...

Buy a value card. Most major cinemas do them and for mine it's about $20 for the year but gets you movie tickets for $10 any time. Well worth it if you go often enough.

Also who here checks the back of their Coles or Woollies receipts? There's always loads of discount sh!t on them.

Also check out Cudo/Spreets/Deals.com.au for good offers.

Yeh and with popcorn and drinks your looking at $50.. shocking really!

Anyways if you go regularly you should get the movie card, $20 bucks but movies are only a tenner after!

I didn't think the Bourne Legacy was great at all.

Prices are ridiculous but same as everything compared to back home.

I only go on Tuesday nights which costs $11. No way I'm paying $20 to watch a feckin movie!

www.cineplex.com.au in Brisbane have a few locations , price vary from $5.50 to a max $8.50 for adult , 3D is $13, its great value

If you have the Entertainment Book there are Hoyts vouchers in it. Plus you can buy tickets for Village Cinemas for $11 which can be used whenever. Costs $5 for postage but still works out way cheaper.

Went seen Bourne tonight, definitely prefer Matt Damon as Bourne.

    anyway

    2x $10 Tickets = $20
2 for 1 Baskin Robbins waffle cone (back of coles Receipt)=$5.40
1 bag Naturals Berry Bliss from coles=$1.42

Night out for 2 at the Movies = $26.82

Having a laugh at some of you paying $50+ ............. Priceless

    Little tip for ye guys:
Event Cinemas have $10 tickets for all movies/all times.
Just enter RYDGES as a promotional code when your booking online. Have used this a few times and always works.
Think Vmax works out at $11. Still decent value.

+1, $6 in our local cinemas for the regular 2D viewing, not a fan of the 3D anyway!
It's pretty simple, cinemas even back home are expensive. Add in the high wages / cost of living here and therefore it's comparable to Irish prices.

And nobody is forcing you fork out a fortune for the cinema popcorn and drinks!

I was thinking of this the other day.

The minimum wage is about $16 or so and for to go to the cinema on Sat night in Melbourne was about $17 to $19.

If you compare that to back home where the minimum wage is about 8 or 9 euro and to go the cinema on Sat night would be 9euro or 9.50 if I book online.

So there isn't a huge difference when you put it in terms of minimum wage.

In saying this I do think the cinema is expensive in Ireland.

Yeah - everything in Australia seems expensive

  • Registered Users Posts: 647 ✭✭✭ArseBurger

It's common sense really. The cost of living is higher because the economy is buoyant (in comparison to other countries at the moment) and the salaries are higher also.

It will always seem expensive if you mentally convert to Euro... Try not to.

I think your best not thinking in converting to euro terms. In Ireland its about 10-12euro for the cinema and thats the average hourly wage. In Melbourne its 20 and thats prob below the average hourly wage.
But to be honest thats way to expensive so I go every Tuesday for 11bucks which is pretty cheap to be fair.

Also for those of you in Melbourne this free cinema in Southgate is meant to be pretty cool.

I plan on going to the Casino Royale and Quantam of Solace screenings. They are on the night's before Skyfall's release. Should make for some good viewing.

For anyone in the Eastern Suburbs in Sydney the Ritz Cinema in Randwick offer a deal via their Facebook page. They've 4 or 5 films every week that are $8 all week long and you just have to mention their Facebook page at the ticket counter to get it. Unreal value

    Hey guys,

I've been in melbourne 4 weeks, trying to live on a budget until i get work.
Anyway we go to Kino Cinema on Collins street on Monday nights, tickets are $7 Mondays.

would be interested in hearing if anyone knows any other places to get a cheap night out?

The Rydges code doesn't work anymore, was getting $10 tickets for a very long time. Dunno if i can bring myself to pay $20 or so

Is there no Cineworld Unlimited type deal? Pay a certain amount a month for free entry? Will be there in March and not sure if i'm willing to fork over so much for every film.

Telstra will take over the $10 cinema tickets offer from Optus after Christmas so if you are a customer it could be handy replacement.

The Optus offer is only Hoyts now, not event cinemas. (I signed up today using an old email I found ;) )

I found out what happened with the code. Somebody found a master code, and when it was blocked, he listef a way to do it with java. Basically it listed all current offer prices, $25 gold class any day, $6.50 regular tickets, $10 Vmax

Within a day or two event cinemas copped what was happening and took down the whole voucher system, no codes work, even vouchers bought for others.

Hopefully it's back up soon and we get the new codes.
