The fact she got them done isn't an issue, to be honest I'm surprised she waited this long. The problem is that instead of having me take her somewhere hygeinic to get them done properly, she bought a cheap pair of earrings at a gift shop, soaked them in dettol, then got a friend to push them through with her fingers.

Obviously I've got health concerns, and tried taking her to see the doctor, but the RECEPTIONIST's attitude was to go home and bring her back if they get infected. If I insist on seeing a doctor it won't be until the end of next week because he's fully booked until then and it isn't an emergency.

In short, do you think she needs to see the doctor to get them checked out, or should I just keep a careful eye and take her if there are signs of an infection - and in the meantime is it best to leave the earrings in or do they need to come out?

My brothers ex-girlfriend used to do this all the time and they never got infected. To be honest, once she keeps cleaning them properly they should be fine, although DIY piercings are NEVER a good idea.

It would be better if the earrings were stainless steel and not something cheap, but at this rate probably best to leave them until they heal.

I noticed that piercers have stopped advising to use savlon sprays etc, just sea salt in boiling water to clean.

If there was any sort of dirt or bacterial contamination then removing the jewellery could lead to abscesses. It's best to leave the jewellery in untill they have healed (6-8 weeks). The main thing to concentrate on is the aftercare to prevent any other issues. Use salt water soaks 3 times daily for the first week and then cut that down to twice daily for the next 5 weeks. Grade 23 Titanium or ASTM F-138 steel would be the best metals to have as they are both Nickel free and she shouldn't react badly to them but if she's used something different they might still heal fine unless she has a nickel sensitivity. See how everything goes and if there are any problems I'd reccomend taking her to a reputable professional piercing studio rather than a doctor. They'll probably have more time to deal with you and they specialise in this area. If they feel she needs anti-biotics (due to bacterial infection) then they should send you on to see a doctor then. Although it was a pretty reckless thing to do you would be surprised what I've seen the body heal successfully so just do the saltwater soaks and chances are she'll be just fine.

    SALTWATER SOAKS:
MIX 1/4 TEASPOON OF SEA SALT WITH 8OZ(CUP) BOILED WATER
LET THE SOLUTION COOL DOWN UNTILL IT'S BEARABLE TO THE TOUCH. SOAK A CLEAN PIECE OF KITCHEN TOWEL IN THE WARM SOLUTION AND PRESS AROUND THE PIERCING. HOLD IT THERE UNTILL THE WATER HAS COOLED TO BODY TEMPERATURE. RINSE WELL WITH FRESH WATER.

N.B. DO NOT ADD MORE SALT THAN RECOMMENDED AS THIS WILL DRY THE SKIN OUT AND IRRITATE THE PIERCING THUS DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD. AFTERCARE SHOULD BE NICE AND GENTLE JUST TO GIVE YOUR BODY A LITTLE HELPING HAND.
    I hope this helps.
