Query about sun-spots (liver spots?)

During the recent sunny period I was working outside and exposed to the sunshine a lot. Usually my skin is quite resistant to sunburn, but I have noticed that I picked up what look like a couple of extra sunspots on my chest and arms (those liver coloured freckles which may or may not be known as liverspots)

I have a couple more on my chest & and arms I've had since childhood & teenage years; these appear to have become noticeably darker.

I've been assured there's nothing to worry about simply from the emergence of a few sunspots, so this is not a medical query.

I'm just wondering whether they indicate for future reference that (a) I am not wearing adequate sunscreen or (b) perhaps my skin is more sensitive to the sun that I had presumed; is sunburn a good enough 'alarm signal' when it comes to solar damage?
