I think it sounded like Newton Faulkner's version of the song, but even if he consciously copied it I wouldn't take anything away from him.

It is a good tactic you often see used in talent shows - do a cover version of a song in the style of a not well known cover version. It sounds fresh and original to most people and less 'karaoke' than most contestants.
