Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hello there,

Going to be heading to Oktoberfest on 5th Oct for the final weekend but have a whole week off after it to do as we please.

Booked a car for the Monday - Wed. Just wondering what people would recommend on seeing OUTSIDE of Munich?

Idea was to go to ober-Salzburg where Hitlers eagle nest is on Monday, and then drive to Salzburg and spend one night there. Tuesday is anyones guess and then Wednesday head to Dachau.

However, I would be delighted to hear any recommendations as I don't know a whole lot about outside of Munich.

    Thanks.

southern bavaria is nice and a short drive from munich, fussen right on the austrian border is a really picturesque town and neuschwanstein castle is just outside the town

further afield if you are travelling to austria can i recommend innsbruck, zell am see and a trip along the spectacular grossglockner high alpine road

if you have a car then I'd take the chance to use it to visit places that are hard to get to by public transport OR at the very least stay off the motorways and enjoy the countryside .

If you point the car towards the alps and rally about there, then you can stay within an hour or so of Munich and still have the most breathtaking scenery.

Theres also the "Romantic Road" which is just one beautiful medieval town after the next (Rothenburg ob der Tauber being the best example, but by far most touristy), with the castles in Füssen at one end and the city of Würzburg at the other which has excellent wine and a few palaces and castles to visit.

You could even combine the 2 ideas and visit Linderhof and Neuschwanstein castles taking in a trans Alpine spin, and then head north for your first overnight somewhere on the romantic road, before taking in the rest over the next 2 days.

Augsburg is about 30 minutes a beautiful Roman City highly recommended.

I've only taken the train there though, usually around 35 minutes on the Bahn.

thanks for the replies. We're going to be in Salzburg on the Monday, so it would be Tuesday that I need to find something to do for. It would probably make sense to head west, or north west as we will be off to Dachau on the Wednesday, but not necessarily back to Munich as we will be there for 3 days afterwards.
