Whipped up a quick shoop, because I realised that Youth Defence et al. are missing a golden opportunity to hire Baghdad Bob to do their PR:

If Youth Defence's own website was anything to go by, where the forums allowed anonymous, unmoderated posting, it probably wouldn't be too hard. Try "guest" as the password.

Sorry Sarklor but you know the way morality and things works. You're either one or the other. Never both.

    RTE are reporting:

One doctor will be required to certify a termination of
    pregnancy in a medical emergency.

Two doctors will be required in the
    case of a non-emergency.

In the case of suicidal ideation, three
doctors will be required to certify that a woman is entitled to a termination of pregnancy.

YD would like the following additions:

... 4 doctors in the case the women is a floozy.
5 doctors in the case the women is unmarried.
6 doctors in the case the women is foreign.
7 doctors in the case the women is a member of the Abortion Rights Campaign.
And 8 doctors in the case the women is a doctor

    ....bit of humour etc.

I can't believe I'm going to say this about a proposed piece of Irish legislation but...
One doctor will be required to certify a termination of
    pregnancy in a medical emergency.

Two doctors will be required in the
    case of a non-emergency.

In the case of suicidal ideation, three
doctors will be required to certify that a woman is entitled to a termination of pregnancy.

"This actually seems fairly reasonable, all things considered."

I think I might need a lie down, that concept is so wildly unfamiliar to me I need to get my bearings.

Well this doesn't sound promising. 6 doctors after all according to the Irish Times' 'government sources.

Who wrote this legislation? The Count?

ONE. One doctor. Ah ah ah

TWO. Two doctors. Ah ah ah

THREE. Three doctors. Ah ah ah....

    the-count.jpg

OK, it's less ridiculous than some of the rumours, but still... Scratch that, six doctors after all according to the IT

That Mathews thread on Broadsheet was deeply depressing. Still, it was worth reading the comments to the end to get this:

RTE news has announced there will be a 'panel' of three consultants, two psychiatrists and an obstetrician, in the case of suicide threat. I wonder will the woman be able to request a panel of three non catholic consultants, given the stance of that religion on abortion? What will be done to protect these women from irrational religious bias? The FG backbenchers seem to have their way, England still a far easier option!

Me too! And got supportive replies from Tuffy & Dowds, as expected. Nothing from Frances Fitzgerald yet.

Ministers have agreed the terms of the proposed Protection of Maternal Life
    Bill.

RTÉ News has learned that in the case of suicidal ideation, for a woman to be granted a termination of pregnancy, the three consultants reviewing the case must all agree that this should proceed.

There is provision for an appeal by the woman where termination of pregnancy is not approved by the first three doctors
That appeal would be to three other consultants.

The appeal panel of three doctors must also be unanimous in
approval for a termination to be granted under law.

The procedures mean that in the case of suicide threat, a woman could have six doctors reviewing her application.

Making it that it has to be unanimous is acting the mickey, tbh. Much as was apparent at the outset, this seems to be designed to be an obstacle rather than something designed with the person in mind.

How many more women are going to have to die before we join the rest of the First World? It will take at least one more now. It'll only be a matter of time before a suicidal woman kills herself after being denied an abortion because one of the doctors on the panel is 'pro life'. Maybe then this ridiculous mess will be sorted out properly.

    Fúck, I didn't think that through. :o

I heard >20 FG'ers are thinking of leaving the party if the suicide clause is left in, and that they're planning to set up a new party - the last thing this country needs is ANOTHER right-wing party. :(

I think if you replaced 'thinking of' with 'dropping dark hints to journalists about' you might be nearer the mark. The only one of the potential 'rebels' with the clout to lead such a venture is Lucinda, and she has zero intention of quitting her flash Euro job. I think we'll end up with 5 or 6 backwoodsmen defying the whip, the bill will pass easily and they and the issue will be forgotten for the rest of this Dail...

Jesus, how do people manage to watch these shows? Surely nobody could handle that much Ronan Mullen without becoming suicidal? And then needing to convince up to 6 doctors about it.

The suicide aspect is so tricky. I know someone who had an abortion after she was raped. She went on to develop an eating disorder, suicidal feelings and started self-harming. I could be wrong, but I never got the sense any of her mental health issues were linked to the fact that she had an abortion. They all came back to the trauma of having been raped - so much self-blame, self-hatred, a lack of confidence came from that. Thankfully she is doing a lot better now. I don't think abortion is a treatment for suicidal feelings in itself, but I just can't take the pro life false sincerity screaming about the 'no evidence' on this particular part of the debate. If only said people were as passionate about suicide in other parts of our community.

    No time limits?

Does that mean if a pregnancy is viable will the baby be killed prior to delivery or be delivered and cared for?

Indeed. Since it's going to be far easier for women to go to England than jump through the hoops (and almost certainly fail) here, the powers that be can turn around and say, "Abortion legislation is there and no one avails of it. Ergo, Ireland doesn't want abortion".
You have to congratulate them in a way. Against all the odds, they've managed to maintain the status quo of political cowardice.
