Just a small note. You guys worked in Big Four at the height of the boom? There is a difference between then and now. Also if anything competition is fiercer now than ever.

I trained 2002-2007 and i know people training now. Not much has changed. Boring work, not appreciated, very long hours. I was miserable for most of it.

But given my current career, work/life balance, money, opportunities it was 100% worth it and I'd re-do it all over again in a heartbeat.

TBH since I started audit I've completely changed my mind set. Before I would have done anything for the big bucks. I am no longer money driven. It's not worth it. I'd prefer half the salary if I got a better work/life balance but more importantly work that interests and challenges me daily. That extra few quid isn't worth hours and hours of counting down the clock, basically wishing 3 years of your life away. Why do something if you don't enjoy it. I did well in my LC because I found it varied and most of the subjects interesting, same as with my degree. I find it hard to do the work I am so disinterested in. Hence, career change. Each to their own. Personal opinion.

IMO you're just looking at the short-term as that's maybe just your training contract for 3 years. I know loads of ACA big 4 qualified people in industry who like their jobs, earn €70-80kpa and are out the door every day at 5.30. And they are very happy.

I think alot of people complaining of big 4 training contracts were never suitable for the finance world in general TBH.

You really have to look at where you want to be and then plot how best to get their. Problem with alot of people graduating from college now is they don't know many people 5-10 years their senior to see first hand the rewards reaped from the big4 training.
